Brewery news USA & Mexico: Constellation Brands ‘always ready if Trump levies tariffs on Mexican beer’ - CEO
President Donald Trump threatened to slap tariffs on all Mexican imports at the end of May. He later backed down from the threat after signing a trade deal with the country.

But Constellation Brands CEO Bill Newlands was quoted as saying on CNBC on June 28 that the brewer of Corona and Modelo would be ready if the tariffs did end up happening.

“If, in fact, something were to happen, we’d always be ready,” he said on CNBC’s “Power Lunch. “We’d mitigate it to some degree.”

Investors were concerned about Constellation’s profit if Trump moved forward, sending shares down nearly 6% the trading session after Trump announced the 5% tariff proposal. Analysts at Morgan Stanley and BMO Capital Markets estimated that the company imports at least three-quarters of its beer from Mexico.

And Constellation’s Mexican beers are among the top performers in its portfolio. The brewer attributed the 7% sales growth of its beer segment during its fiscal-first quarter in part to the success of Modelo Especial. While U.S. consumption of beer has declined in recent years, Mexican imported beers outperformed the rest of the industry in 2018, according to industry research firm IWSR.

Newlands said that he believes that the Mexican tariffs are no ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer drinking not dead – Constellation Brands CEO
Long live the iced cold cerveza.

“Beer [drinking] is not dead,” said Constellation Brands CEO Bill Newlands in an interview with Yahoo Finance.

Newlands — who leads the maker of the well-known high-end suds Corona and Modelo and a sizable top-shelf wine portfolio — certainly has data on his side to prove 21-year-olds drinking hard seltzer and canned rosé haven’t derailed the beer industry.

That is provided the beer is on the premium side of the equation and plays into some form of health and wellness trend.

Constellation Brands is fresh off reporting its first fiscal quarter sales and operating profit in its beer business rose 7.4% and 11.7%, respectively. The company said shipment volume growth was above its expectations in the quarter, fueled by interest in premium options such as Modelo and new lower carb Corona Premier.

Meanwhile, the company was successful in passing through higher prices to offset its increased costs. The beer segment’s performance was far away better than Constellation Brands’ wine and spirit portfolio.

The stock popped 5% on June 28 in response to the better-than-expected quarter and outlook.

According to Newlands, Constellation Brands is just out-working rivals such as Anheuser-Busch, Boston Beer, and Molson Coors to win with fickle consumers.

Brewery news USA, CA: Fruition Brewing opening its doors in Watsonville on June 29
Over the last month David Purgason and Tallula Preston went through a mild refresher course on what it takes to run a small business, the Register Pajaronian reported on June 28.

The co-owners of newly-established Fruition Brewing have used Sundays in June as test runs for their official opening day, scheduled for Saturday, June 29 from 1-8 p.m.

What did they learn during those “soft openings?”

“It was mostly the little things like having more chairs, more tables, more glassware,” Purgason said. “You forget some of those things.”

Those “little things” did not detract from Fruition’s overwhelmingly successful launch in the East Lake Village shopping center. The small-batch brewery has been flooded with beer aficionados itching for a taste of their wide selection — they brew everything from lagers to double IPAs, stouts and mixed-fermentation table beers — and locals looking to spend a buck in town.

“It’s been overwhelming in a good way,” Purgason said. “We’ve been working on this for so long it’s been fun to finally meet everyone that’s been peeking through our windows for months and share our beer with people.”

Most of the people that have walked through the doors of the large industrial-inspired building have found the brewery seemingly ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: The Bakery Brewing already open to public in Port Moody
A long-planned brewery on the Brewers Row strip in Port Moody, BC has announced that it is now open to the public, the Canadian Beer News reported.

The Bakery Brewing is an off-shoot of Moody Ales that will specialize in sour and wild ales, Bakery beers have been available at Moody Ales on an occasional basis in the past year or so, including a tap takeover last December, but now can be found on tap and in bottles directly at the source.

The philosophy behind Bakery is as follows:

So what can you expect? Well, for starters, a lot of new beers all the time. We brew very small batches here at The Bakery Brewing, and many of the beers you will enjoy have taken many months, some well over a year to be ready. Many of our beers are painstakingly created by blending multiple brews together to get the exact flavours our brewers are looking for before they end up in your glass. It’s all about experimentation and discovery.

The Bakery Brewing is located at 2617 Murray Street, in the former Calabria Bakery building between Moody Ales and The Parkside Brewery.

Brewery news USA, GA: Southern Philosophy Brewing launches in Bainbridge
After almost a year of work, a new Bainbridge business opened its doors to the public on June 28, WTXL ABC 27 reported.

It's just one of many employers moving into Decatur County.

The business is Southern Philosophy Brewing, a brew-pub located right next to the American. Over the last year, the building has undergone a lot of remodeling to get it ready to open.

Of course, the brewery's building isn't the only one that's been getting a complete make over in downtown. Several of them are in various stages of renovations, making room for new apartments, stores, and even public bathrooms.

Even areas outside of downtown Bainbridge are seeing new construction. North of town is the Taurus USA site. A Chick-Fil-A will be opening south of the city, though work has just begun there.

For city and county leaders, the growth over the last few years has been incredible.

"To have it happen in such a public way and such a large way, it's bit. Most small communities like ours, it's a pretty big deal when you can bring in 25 to 50 jobs," said Rick McCaskill, Executive Director of Development Authority of Bainbridge & Decatur County. "When you can bring in over 300 jobs, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Chainless Brewing becomes Durango’s newest brewery
Chainless Brewing, Durango’s newest brewery (and the seventh if you count the two that have left), came together through a lot of hard work and also a bit of luck, The Durango Herald reported on June 30.

Lucas Ratcliff and Jason Hughes, the head brewer and executive chef of the brewery, respectively, found out about each other’s ambitions almost by accident.

“We’ve been home brewing for years, and Lucas was the service manager out at Nissan of Durango and Jason was a client of his,” said Corrin Oxnam, Chainless’ general manager and Ratcliff’s wife. “(Hughes), in passing, said he wanted to open a restaurant and Lucas, in passing, said ‘I want to open a brewery.’ About two weeks later, Jason was at the casino, playing the slots, and won $57,000. And here we are.”

Hughes said he was looking at restaurant locations when he found out Ratcliff and Oxnam wanted to start a brewery.

“I went in to get my car serviced and was telling (Ratcliff) about Guido’s, which I was looking to rent and take over,” Hughes said. “(Ratcliff) said, ‘We’ll, I’m looking to do a brewery.’ Next thing you know, I was driving away and there was this space that I wasn’t ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Whistle Buoy Brewing now open in Victoria’s Market Square

Brewery news USA, FL: The High Springs Brewing Company becomes the first brewery in High Springs
The city of High Springs is welcoming its first brewery.

The High Springs Brewing Company opened its doors on June 28 for its soft opening, WCJB reported.

The brewery is owned by four brothers and in-laws and is located in downtown High Springs where they've repurposed Archie Knowles old welding shop.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Heathen’s Brewing becomes Calgary’s newest gluten-free brewery
Beer is back on the menu for celiac sufferers in Calgary thanks to a new brewery, CTV News reported on June 28.

Heathen’s Brewing offers a beer line-up that is completely gluten-free.

Wes Maxwell started making gluten-free brews at home after learning some of his family members had celiac disease, including two of his kids.

“They’re both over 18 and enjoy beer and you could see everyone kind of suffering,” said Maxwell. He created about 45 different kinds including one with peanut butter.

His friend Jeff Silzer enjoyed tasting the beers and thought they were so good they should open up shop.

“There’s actually nobody else in the marketplace in Alberta specifically that is a dedicated gluten-free beer,” said Silzer, co-founder of Heathen’s Brewing.

Health Canada estimates as many as 300, 000 Canadians could have celiac disease though many remain undiagnosed.

"It’s a bigger portion of the population than one realizes," said Silzer.

Both men think most gluten-free beers lack flavour or have a metallic taste and believe their brews taste very close to traditional beer.

"The response we’ve had so far is nobody would be able to tell," said Silzer.

"None of the beers are sorghum based which is where the stigma of gluten-free beers not tasting very ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Mahou San Miguel acquires Spanish beer brand Brutus
Mahou San Miguel continues to grow in the craft beer sector with the acquisition of a 70% stake in Spanish beer brand Brutus, FoodBev reported on July 2.

Founded in 2015 in Barcelona, Brutus produces lager that is available in more than 350 points of sale. Mahou San Miguel said Brutus is a “modern and cosmopolitan” brand that has a “premium positioning”.

Brutus co-founder Jordi Calvet will lead the brand’s domestic and international strategy going forward, retaining creative and commercial independence.

Post-acquisition, the 5% ABV Brutus lager will be manufactured at Mahou San Miguel’s microbrewery in Alovera, Spain.

Peio Arbeloa, managing director of Mahou San Miguel Spain, said: “We believe that Brutus is the ideal brand to allow us to continue to grow among a significant consumer segment who demand different brands.

“This beer is a breath of fresh air for the category, with a unique personality that perfectly complements our portfolio and that will help us a lot in our premiumisation strategy”.

The announcement comes months after Mahou San Miguel bought a majority stake in US craft beer producer Avery Brewing.

Mahou San Miguel said the agreement fits within its vision to continue exploring international opportunities with partners who provide their knowledge of local consumers and ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong: High rents and competition make brewers pursue export markets
Stressed by high rents and a highly competitive domestic market, Hong Kong’s leading local brewers are now aggressively pursuing export markets around Asia, and in some cases to Europe and the US, The South China Morning Post reported on June 30.

Patrick Gatherer, general manager of The Globe, one of Hong Kong’s best known bars for promoting craft beer, said local brewers have developed a level of reliability and quality suitable for bigger business aims.

“Some of them are breaking away from the pack,” said Gatherer.

Exact numbers on the nascent Hong Kong industry are hard to come by. The Hong Kong Craft Brew Association does not keep exact tallies and most brewers are reluctant to give production and sales figures.

There are as many as 35 brands and 18 breweries in Hong Kong. These start-up brewers are often former bankers, lawyers or other professionals who have turned passion projects into successful businesses.

Ian Jebbit, founder of Gweilo beer, now recognised as Hong Kong’s biggest local brewery, said he started exporting about a year ago. Jebbit, a former intellectual property lawyer in Hong Kong with DLA Piper, is determined to make Gweilo Beer a household name. “This is what I wanted from the outset. I ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Diageo working on non-alcoholic version of Guinness
Diageo’s global head of innovation, Michael Ward, has admitted that the company has been working on a non-alcoholic version of Guinness, although he said that developing such a product posed "a lot of challenges to work through", CampaignLive reported on June 2.

"You would certainly expect that we would," Ward said, after being put on the spot over the question. "[But] it needs to be a no-compromise proposition." He was at pains to state the difficulty of achieving acceptable quality in no- or low-alcoholic formulations.

Ward was speaking at a media event focusing on Diageo’s ongoing innovation across beer and spirits that took place on June 2.

The company is determined not to rush new products, he said. For example, it has not expanded the scope of its early 2018 test launch of a 0.5% ABV lager under the Guinness brand, called Pure Brew, in 250 pubs in Ireland.

"There are many ways of reducing alcohol," Luca Lupini, global head of research and development, said. "In Pure Brew, we ferment it right down to 0.5%. There's no post-processing. We don't heat it up, we don't evaporate it, we don't put it through a kit. And what you end up with is a much truer ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro’s new Terra beer sales surpass 100 mln bottles in just 100 days after launch
Hite Jinro said on July 2 that Terra's sales, which marks its 100th day since its launch, have surpassed 100 million bottles, the Korea IT Times reported.

Terra sales reached 3.34 million boxes (330 ml) and 101.39 million bottles as of June 29 . This is 11.6 bottles sold per second, and 2.4 bottles per Korean adult (20 years of age or older, based on 42.04 million people) were consumed.

Hite Jinro sold more than 1 million boxes of Terra in 39 days, recording the fastest sales among beer brands in the early stages of its launch. It has since accelerated, selling 2 million boxes in 72 days and 3 million boxes in 97 days, which is about 1.4 times faster than the sales speed of 1 million boxes.

What's notable is that the launch of Terra has not resulted in the erosion of existing beer brands. Along with Terra, the existing brands such as Hite and Max synergized, up about 5 percent year-on-year in June this year, the company said.

Hite Jinro expects the figure, which had been on a steady decline since 2015, to shift upward this year, with the green light for its turnarounds in the beer sector.

Hite Jinro is ...More info on site
