Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors Canada opens new British Columbia brewery
Molson Coors Canada has opened its new brewery in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia at Chilliwack, the Drinks Insight Network reported on September 18.

The C$300 mln (US$226.2 mln) brewery will have 100 staff members, joining the Molson Coors network of 29 breweries worldwide.

Molson Coors Canada president and CEO Frederic Landtmeters said: “This new modern brewery nestled at the foot of the Cascade mountain range of British Columbia in Chilliwack will proudly brew the Molson and Coors trademarks along with many other brands within our portfolio.

“This brewery will primarily serve our western Canadian markets positioned strategically in British Columbia to offer an efficient and effective modern brewery to compete in this important market.”

Announced in August 2016, construction works on the project began in April 2017.

During the construction phase, the project is said to have created more than 1,000 jobs in the region.

The facility incorporates technologies that consume less electricity, as well as reduce carbon footprint, the brewing company noted.

Commenting on the development, Chilliwack mayor Ken Popove said: “On behalf of Chilliwack City Council, it is a pleasure to officially welcome Molson Coors Canada to Chilliwack.

“Back in the 1890s, Chilliwack was home to the first successful hop-growing field in British Columbia ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Rains slow down barley harvest in most regions
There were widespread rains across the Canadian prairies last week, ranging from a trace to 50 mm, which slowed down the harvest for the majority of the regions, CMBTC reported on September 19. This week, the forecast is for generally dry and warmer temperatures but some regions will be slowed down due to light showers that will likely stop or slow down harvest progress. Most of Western Canada is drying out and farmers are taking every advantage of non-rain weather to harvest their crop. The cool, wet weather has taken its toll on the quality, causing significant degradation of the barley. Sprout/chitted seed has been reported to as high as 60% on the barley that has been harvested to-date. Alberta It was another wet week in parts of the province but there is little rain in the forecast and many regions are drying out. However the barley is still not dry in the fields and farmers continue to harvest tough barley and dry it on farm. The maltsters may have to entertain the possibility of accepting barley with up to 15.5% moisture. Not all farmers have access to dryers and barley is being harvested in the mid to upper ...More info on site

Barley news USA & Mexico: Mexico's brewing expansion strengthens demand for US barley
Mexico is now the world’s largest beer exporter in terms of both value and volume—and that growth is good news for U.S. barley farmers and malt producers who supply their main ingredient, the High Plains Journal reported on September 18..

To capture this demand growth, the U.S. Grains Council is strengthening existing supply-chain relationships and introducing new buying strategies through focused trade servicing activities, including a trade team mission to Idaho recently.

Mexican breweries rely on U.S. barley producers to be their main suppliers for imported barley. Mexico imported 269,000 metric tonnes (12.4 million bushels) of U.S. malted barley in the 2017-2018 marketing year, representing the single largest market, and one that continues to grow. Total Mexican beer sales are now worth more than $20 billion annually, with value rising sharply year-over-year.

All of the major breweries are making substantial investments in new brewing, malting and bottle manufacturing plants. This growth and investment represents additional demand for malted barley as well as barley for malt.

“Although Mexico is expanding local barley production, the malting industry cannot keep up with the demand from brewing plants,” said Javier Chavez, USGC marketing specialist in Mexico, who accompanied the team to Idaho. “With several new plants coming ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, HI: Kona Brewing Co.’s new brewery targets next spring opening
Construction is moving along at Kona Brewing Co.’s new brewery, with the first kegs and cans of beer targeted to roll off the line this spring, the West Hawaii Today reported on September 15.

After grading and laying the concrete pad upon which the 30,000-square-foot brewery and canning facility will sit, crews are currently raising the metal girders that’ll frame the building and installing the brewing equipment, including brewing vessels and fermenting tanks. At full operation, the brewery will turn out upward of 100,000 barrels per year.

“We’re looking to be all pau by the end of February, beginning of March,” Bill Smith, Kona Brewing general manager of Hawaii operations, said on September 13.

With the brewery and canning operation expected to be up and running by then, the first beer is anticipated to be ready for consumption around March or April.

Kona Brewing, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, broke ground on the Old Kona Industrial Area facility in March 2016 and initially expected to be in full operation by early 2018, ahead of the silver anniversary. In 2017, that date was pushed back to 2019 by setbacks with the facility’s wastewater system that’ll render wastewater to R1 reusable water.

Smith said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Pelican Brewing Company’s newest brewpub coming soon to Lincoln City
Pelican Brewing Company’s newest Oregon Coast brewpub is coming soon to Lincoln City. The brewery announces its expanded coastal footprint on the site of The Bay House, an iconic restaurant on Siletz Bay. With a long, rich legacy in fine cuisine and hospitality on the Central Coast, The Bay House plans to relocate and expand its popular venue at another site nearby, Brewbound reported on September 16.

Brewery news USA, IL: Noon Whistle Brewing to open production facility in Naperville by March 2020
Lombard’s Noon Whistle Brewing is planning to open a production facility and tasting room in Naperville in 2020, the Chicago Tribune reported on September 17.

Noon Whistle’s new 30,000-square-foot location at 1748 W. Jefferson Ave. will include a production facility and a 1,600-square-foot tasting room, said Mike Condon, one of the brewery owners.

The space is in a new building in a light industrial area of the city.

“With this particular location for us, the main purpose is to expand production capabilities,” Condon said.

Once open, the Naperville production facility will do a majority of the Noon Whistle’s brewing. The space will also include brewery offices. “It will kind of take us to a next step,” Condon said.

The tasting room will have a small patio and likely will only feature Noon Whistle beers and some ciders, he said.

“It’ll truly be a space you can come in and try the beer,” he said.

Noon Whistle is currently located at 800 Roosevelt Road in Lombard, and owners have had their sights set on Naperville as an additional location for a while, Condon said.

“We made the decision we wanted to stay in the suburbs. It’s what we know, and our three owners live out here,” he said. “We ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Beara Irish Brewing Company up for sale in Portsmouth
Four years after Beara Irish Brewing Company opened, the business is for sale and under agreement, while details are being kept secret, for the short term, Seacostonline.com reported on September 16.

Michael Potorti opened the brewery with his wife, Louise, because they found American beers “subpar,” they told the Portsmouth Herald two years ago. A message left on September 13 for Potorti was not returned by September 16, but the listing broker for his business, Martha Baroody, said an agreement for the sale is pending and there should be public news soon.

Baroody said if and when a sale is finalized, there will be an interesting story.

The business is listed for $170,000 and does not include the real estate at Heritage Commons, 2800 Lafayette Road. It does include brewing equipment, everything in the tasting room, a granite bar, taps, sinks, stools, tables, refrigeration and all brewery assets.

The Potortis started Beara Brewing Company in 2014 and partially launched it through an online Kickstarter fundraiser. Michael Potorti said he always wanted to brew Irish beer and when he was laid off from a job as an auditor in Portsmouth, he decided that was the time to make it happen.

Brewery news USA, IN: Logansport Brewing Co. looking for new owner
The owner of Logansport Brewing Co. is determined that it will reopen soon. However, Brandon Barron said he will no longer be part of it, even as partial owner, pharostribune.com reported on September 14.

He’s moving downstate for a new job, but he’s talking to interested people about purchasing the brewery.

He wants to make sure the brewery continues — even without him — and to set the new owners up to succeed.

“It’s my baby. I’m not going to let it go by the wayside,” he said.

Barron had incorporated two of the original recipes for beer from the original Logansport Brewing Co., the first brewery in the city.

As a historian, he also planned to incorporate parts of the Columbia Brewing Co. and K.D. Schmidt breweries, which were the subsequent buyers of the original brewery.

However, whether the next owners go with his vision is up to them, he said.

“The direction is going to be significantly improved from where I had it,” he said.

The brewery is also in arbitration for location and may be in a new venue or still at 27 S. 3rd St. — the former Firestone Tire building on the south side of Third Street Bridge.

“They’d like to stay as downtown ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Midwest Coast Brewing Company now open for business in Chicago
A new brewery has opened for business at 2137 W. Walnut St. in West Town, Chicago. The newcomer is called Midwest Coast Brewing Company, Hoodline reported on September 17.

Midwest Coast Brewing Company offers 12 beers available on tap, including the Local Time Blonde Ale and the CHI.P.A. (Chicago I.P.A.), as seen on its website. According to its Facebook page, the spot's run by "regular folks who love making great beer and sharing it with those around us."

The new brewery has proven popular thus far, with a five-star rating out of four reviews on Yelp.

Justin M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Aug. 29, wrote, "Great beers and great owners [and] staff! Can't go wrong with live music at a brewery either."

And Blake M. wrote, "Owner is a solid dude and the beer is some good stuff! Make sure to hit this place up!"

Midwest Coast Brewing Company is open from 3–9 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, noon–10 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on Sunday.

Brewery news USA, MI: Black Lotus Brewing Company posts listing on Facebook inviting inquiries for sale
Black Lotus Brewing Company appears to be hunting for a new owner. The popular Clawson-based brewery posted a listing to Facebook in late-August inviting inquiries for the sale of an unnamed “award-winning” Oakland County brewpub established in 2006, Eater Detroit reported on September 17.

The listing on BizBuySell through real estate firm Zak & Associates advertises “a well located, very popular brewery” with a seven-barrel brewing capacity for $450,000. The brewery’s gross revenue is listed as $1,400,000 with a rental payment of $7,900 per month. The lease on the 5,000-square-foot building is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2019.

Management for Black Lotus did not respond to multiple requests for comment and a realtor representing the unidentified brewery declined to disclose any information regarding the client, stating that the owner’s desire for a confidential sale. However, people with knowledge of the sale confirm that the brewpub in question is Black Lotus.

The reasons for the sale weren’t immediately available. Black Lotus holds a Class C liquor license as well as a brew pub license and a specially designated merchant license. However, Michigan Liquor Licensing Commision confirm that the treasury has a levy against the business for sales tax.

Black Lotus was founded in September ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Wild Heart Brewing Company eyeing early 2020 opening in Hartsville
If Casey Hancock and his five partners stay on track, Hartsville will have a microbrewery opening in the first quarter of 2020, SCNow reported on September 18.

Hancock gave an update to the Sunrise Rotary Club at its Aug. 21 meeting at the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce on the progress for Wild Heart Brewing Company.

The group of investors plans to open Wild Heart Brewing in the former Gardner’s Fertilizer building at 317 Railroad Ave. in downtown Hartsville.

Hancock and his mother previously owned the building and sold it. He said that when the opportunity to buy it back came up, they jumped on it.

“Everything just fell in place after my mother and I had the opportunity to repurchase the property,” he said.

Hancock said he had been hearing people talk about wanting a brewery in Hartsville.

Hancock said his good friend Zach Riner will be the head brewmaster. He said Riner wanted to move back to Hartsville with his family.

Financial partners were located, and the process began.

Hancock said it will be a microbrewery, which means they will brew their own beer on site and serve it on premises.

“We plan to have some homemade sodas as well,” Hancock said.

In a phone interview, Riner said, ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Australians increase consumption of non-alcoholic, low and mid-strength beers
Australian’s taste in beer is changing with non-alcoholic, low and mid-strength beers now accounting for around a quarter of all Carlton & United Breweries’ sales, B&T reported on September 18.

Carlton Zero is playing a role in helping drive the trend towards moderation: since launching a year ago it has sold more than 3.2 million litres in Australia.

Carlton Zero dominates non-alcoholic beer sales in bottle shops, driving up sales in the category by 14 times.

No, low and mid-strength beer now make up almost 25 per cent of the volume of beer sales for CUB – up from just 10 per cent five years ago.

Carlton Zero’s first birthday coincides with the Global Be(er) Responsible initiative, which is a worldwide effort by brewers, including CUB, to promote responsible consumption of beer.

CUB’s Chris Maxwell said the tastes of Australian beer lovers is changing.

“We launched Carlton Zero because beer lovers told us they wanted more opportunities to enjoy beer responsibly,” he said. “The popularity of Zero shows it’s becoming normal to consume non- alcoholic beer on many different occasions.”

“Research shows the most common reason people drink non-alcoholic beer is because they’re the designated driver, and we’re seeing this predominately in people aged 18-34. We think ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Barley exports drop by 15.6% in July-August 2018/19
According to preliminary data, Russia exported 1.042 mln tonnes of barley in July-August 2019/20, or 15.6% less than in July-August 2018/19, Indiainfoline reported on September 19.

Almost 55% of Russia’s total barley exports were absorbed by Saudi Arabia - the pace of deliveries to this market is comparable with last year.

Barley news India: Indian maltsters buy 55,000 tonnes of Argentinean barley for delivery by November
Indian malt companies – Barmalt Malting India Pvt Ltd and United Breweries Ltd – have signed a contract to import around 55,000 tonnes of barley from Argentina at around $200 per tonne cost and freight, Cogencis reported on September 19 citing an official from one of the companies.

The imports are scheduled to reach Adani Port in Gujarat in the first week of November. However, the quantity being imported by these companies separately is unavailable, the official said.

In August, as per industry estimates, 65,000-75,000 tonnes of barley were imported by malt makers.

With the supply crunch in the domestic market, and the new crop arrivals scheduled to commence only from March, malt companies turned to importing the coarse grain to meet their requirements, owner of a Jaipur-based malt company said.

In addition, barley imports come out cheaper than buying the coarse grain from domestic markets, traders said.

In the benchmark market of Jaipur, the coarse grain was sold at 1,880 rupees per 100 kg on September 19.

Supplies in the market have almost dried up as stocks with farmers have ended, said Mahesh Gupta, owner of the Jaipur-based Swastik Broker.

According to the agriculture ministry's fourth advance estimate, India's barley output in 2018-19 is ...More info on site

Barley news South Africa: South African Breweries launch new agricultural research and development facility in Caledon
South African Breweries (SAB) on September 19 launched an R80 million agricultural research and development facility in Caledon in the Western Cape, which will pilot new farming techniques, technology, and crop varieties to accelerate agricultural development in the country, IOL reported.

The facility, which will have a critical focus on black emerging farmers was officially launched in conjunction with the national department of agriculture and is one of the largest privately-funded research and development facilities in South Africa.

All research output will be made freely available on a dedicated website, along with weather data, to ensure the benefits are spread as widely as possible to all farmers. Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mcebisi Skwatsha, noted that Agriculture and Agro-processing industries play an important role in making a contribution towards economic growth, poverty alleviation and job creation. SAB’s efforts are an important part of this.

The company said with micro-breweries, a malting plant and laboratory on-site to test and enhance new varieties of barley for making beer, the centre will open new opportunities for farmers to improve yield and profitability, and for brewers to enhance flavour in their beverages.

The space is designed for collaboration in order to co-create innovative solutions with partners, including ...More info on site
