Barley news Canada: Barley exports up 12% in 2018-19, expected to fall in 2019-20
For 2018-19, domestic feed use of barley in Canada decreased by nearly half a million tonnes from 2017-18 to the second lowest level on record, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its September report.

Exports increased by 12% to 3.16 mln tonnes which is the highest level of the last decade.

Carry-out stocks declined to the historically low level of almost 0.9 mln tonnes.

The average price of feed barley in Lethbridge feedlots was a near record of C$260/t, due to the tight supply and strong demand.

For 2019-20, barley production in Canada is estimated to increase by 19% to almost 10 mln tonnes, as barley output in most barley producing provinces, except Quebec, increased. About 60%, or 0.97 mln tonnes, of the increase in production comes from Alberta, the leading barley producing province in Canada, and 39%, or 0.62, mln tonnes from Saskatchewan. The supply of barley in Canada is expected to increase significantly from 2018-19 due to sharply increased production which more than offsets historically low carry-in stocks.

Barley domestic use for 2019-20 is expected to increase from 2018-19 reflecting higher feed use. Exports are forecast to fall due to improved supplies in competing countries and lower shipments to China. Carry-out stocks ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Eastern Market Brewing Co. to acquire Axle Brewing Co. in Ferndale
Fast-growing Eastern Market Brewing Co. will buy Axle Brewing Co., the brewery and taproom in Ferndale that closed in June after two years, the Crain’s Detroit Business reported on September 20.

The elephant-themed microbrewery plans to open a second operation outside Detroit, even as it plans to expand its home operations in the Eastern Market food district just northeast of downtown, according to a news release. In the agreed-upon deal, Eastern Market would take over and rebrand Axle's 10,000-square-foot Ferndale base that housed a restaurant, taproom, beer garden and production equipment at 567 Livernois St. in southwest Ferndale.

The Deroit brewer expects the purchase deal to close once all its licensing is approved, said Dayne Bartscht, managing partner of Eastern Market Brewing. It would aim to open afterward, possibly in late 2019 or early 2020. Bartscht declined to disclose terms of the purchase.

The Detroit Free Press first reported the deal.

The move would triple the Detroit brewer's total production capacity to approximately 3,000 barrels a year, grow its can selection and allow it to experiment with barrel-aged beers, it said in the release. It would also move packaging operations there.

The incoming taproom and eatery is dubbed the Ferndale Project for now, Bartscht said. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Longslice Brewery to open own bricks-and-mortar location in Toronto
Five years after launching as a contract brewing operation, Longslice Brewery has announced the opening of its bricks-and-mortar location in Toronto, the Canadian Beer News reported on September 23.

Founded by brothers and award-winning homebrewers Jimmy & John Peat and partner Sebastian Lesch, Longslice has brewed its beers – including Hopsta la Vista IPA and Loose Lips Lager – at several locations since the summer of 2014, but is now fully operational with its own facility at The Aviary, the restaurant and bar that Longslice opened last year in partnership with The Dock Ellis.

The official grand opening for the brewery will take place on Monday September 30th starting at 5:00 PM, and will also celebrate the recent launch of Sky Bison APA. Described as “a crisp, citusy American Pale Ale brewed with west coast Azacca and Cascade hops,” it has been named the official beer of the Toronto Food Film Festival.

The Aviary and Longslice Brewery is located at 484 Front Street East in Toronto’s Canary District.

Brewery news USA, WA: Sage Brewing Company aims at October opening in Pasco
Pasco is getting a new brewery that's set to open up in October, newstalk870.am reported on September 23.

Dreams really do come true for two men who had a dream of opening up their own brewery and Pasco seems to be the perfect location for it at 8425 Chapel Hill Blvd.

Tyson Crudup and Ben Grogan are teaming up on a life-long dream of running their own brewery.

Crudup recently resigned his job at Yakima Chief Hops to become co-owner in Sage Brewing.

Sage Brewing will feature a wide variety of beers that includes multiple IPA's with hop-fed pales. Sage Brewing will also have 12 taps and easy-drinking lighter beers.

Sage Brewing's goal is to open by late October and you can check out all the details on the new brewery at their Facebook page.

Brewery news USA, MI: Arcadia Brewing ceases operations at Kalamazoo brewery
After months of uncertainty, Arcadia Brewing ceased operations on September 18 at its 5-year-old, $7 million production facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Brewbound reported.

The 24-year-old craft brewery faced foreclosure after falling $1.4 million behind on its mortgage payments and owing $150,000 in back taxes. Arcadia’s mortgage holder, First National Bank of Michigan, assumed control over the financially distressed company’s property in March.

Arcadia founder Tim Suprise didn’t return messages seeking comment. The company’s website, which was active earlier this week, now returns a password protected page.

In December, Suprise told Brewbound that the company was close to bringing on a strategic partner. However, that deal never came to fruition, and Suprise ultimately transferred the property to the bank for $1 in March, according to MLive.com.

Nevertheless, Arcadia’s age and size makes its closure notable, Brewers Association (BA) chief economist Bart Watson told Brewbound.

“Closings of a brewery the size of Arcadia are fairly rare, simply because breweries that size are less than 10% of total brewing companies,” he wrote in an email.

Production data collected by the BA show a bumpy ride for Arcadia in recent years. The company’s output reached a high point of 15,830 barrels in 2016. However, Arcadia’s production declined 43%, to 9,000 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Five Wits Brewing Co. receives consumer and carry-out permit
New beer licenses that were issued at the Chattanooga Beer board meeting on September 19 include a consumer and carry-out permit for Five Wits Brewing Co., 1501 Long St., The Chattanoogan reported on September 20.

This business received a manufacturing permit earlier, so it could begin the process of developing recipes and brewing beer before the business actually opened. They will be ready to start serving in about a week and a half.

Michael and Taylor Monen who own Taco Mamacito, Urban Stack, Community Pie, Milk and Honey and Clydes are owners of this new business as well.

It will employ about 75 people when it opens.

Brewery news Mexico & USA: President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticizes location of Constellation Brands’ planned Mexican brewery
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on September 23 criticized the location of Constellation Brands Inc’s planned brewery in the northern border city of Mexicali, in the latest swipe at a major investment agreed before he took power, Reuters reported.

The massive, partly-built brewery has been a bone of contention with local protest groups, which argue it will cause water shortages in one of the driest regions of the country.

Lopez Obrador told a regular news briefing that authorities should not be granting permits to create dairy areas and build breweries in the north of Mexico where water is scarce.

“Just imagine the authorization they gave to build a big plant to produce beer in Mexicali. No,” the president said, without mentioning Constellation Brands by name.

“If someone wants to produce beer - in case it’s necessary - in the southeast, that’s where the Papaloapan is, the Grijalva, the Usumacinta,” he added, naming several major rivers in Mexico. “That’s where 70% of the country’s water is.”

Lopez Obrador raised the subject of the brewery when discussing what his government was doing to protect the environment. In March, he said he would have a study carried out on how the Mexicali plant affected water supplies in ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. receives green light to sell P10 bln in bonds
San Miguel Corp. has received the green light from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to sell P10 billion in bonds, the Philippine Star reported on September 21.

In a disclosure on September 20, SMC said it has been issued a permit to sell five year bonds due 2024, which form part of the company’s shelf registration of P60 billion.

The net proceeds of the offer may be used either to fund the redemption of the outstanding Series 2B preferred shares or for refinancing or re-denomination of existing loan obligations.

The bonds have an interest rate of 5.55 percent.

SMC intends to initially fund the redemption through a bridge loan to be availed of from BDO Unibank.

Brewery news The Philippines: Court of Tax Appeals affirms San Miguel Brewery tax refund
The Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) affirmed the P44.5-million tax refund claim it partially granted to San Miguel Brewery, Inc. on the excise taxes erroneously collected on removals of its alcohol products in 2015, BusinessWorld Online reported on September 23.

In a 10-page resolution on Sept. 17, the court’s special second division denied for lack of merit the motion for partial new trial of San Miguel and the motion for partial reconsideration of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

“In sum, both parties failed to convince the Court that their respective positions are meritorious. Petitioner failed to prove that its failure to present evidence was due to excusable negligence or mistake,” the ruling read.

“On the other hand, respondent merely rehashed his arguments which were already addressed by the Court in the assailed Decision. As such, the Court is constrained to deny the subject motions,” it added.

San Miguel is seeking partial new trial, claiming excusable negligence and mistake as it failed to present part of its evidence such as sworn declarations due to time constraint and voluminous documents.

The court ruled, that the company’s reasons “do not fall under the definition of mistake or excusable neglect,” saying it could not have failed to comply ...More info on site
