Brewery news UK: AB InBev confirms Corona beer is now being brewed in the UK
Anheuser-Busch InBev is producing Corona beer in the UK as well as in China, as the brewer ramps up overseas production of a brand previously brewed only in Mexico.

The company confirmed on November 4 to just-drinks an analyst report last month that Corona production started in China in May. A spokesperson for AB InBev also said brewing is now taking place in the UK.

In a post last month on AB InBev UK's website, the brewer confirmed plans to start Corona brewing at its Magor, South Wales, site. The company said it will use the same production process used to make Corona in Mexico for the past 90 years, including the same yeast strain.

Lloyd Manship, the Magor brewery manager, said: "Corona's sales value has been growing by double digits (in the UK), so it makes sense to increase Corona's availability here."

In AB InBev's Q3 results last month, CEO Carlos Brito said the company had "recently started brewing Corona locally in certain markets where it's growing rapidly".

The AB InBev spokesperson did not immediately confirm if Corona is being brewed in markets other than Mexico, the UK and China.

Previously, Corona was only produced in Mexico. AB InBev owns the brand globally, with ...More info on site

Barley news Ghana: Guinness Ghana Limited on track to reach 70 percent local raw material sourcing
Beverage producer Guinness Ghana Limited says it is on track to reach 70 percent local raw material sourcing from Ghanaian farmers, GhanaWeb reported on November 1.

This follows research by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology which showed that the company has increased its local raw material sourcing from 12 percent to 55 percent.

Speaking to Citi Business News on how the development has positively impacted the lives of farmers, the Corporate Relations Director of Guinness Ghana Limited, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah stated that over 30,000 farmers have benefited from the initiative.

“Since its inception, Guinness Ghana has grown its percentage of local raw material usage from 12% in 2012 to the 55% this 2019, a firm demonstration of our commitment to the agenda”, she stressed.

According to her, the consistent growth in local raw material uptake has been achieved through significant capital investment to re-engineer plant and equipment, as well as technical and financial support to farmers to improve crop yield.

Guinness Ghana’s Local Raw Material (LRM) intervention started in 2012 in line with Government’s Policy initiative to incorporate the use of local raw materials in the production of our alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Guinness Ghana’s activities in the maize, sorghum, and cassava value chains ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada: Canadian whisky’s reputation on the upswing
After having been disparaged for years, Canadian whisky’s reputation is on the upswing. While spirits fans have long extolled the virtues of Scotch, Irish and American whisk(e)y, Canadian whisky has been left in the doldrums. But a raft of investment from global players, the opening of new artisan distilleries, innovative expressions and, critically, a renewed focus on quality mean the tide is turning, The Spirits Business reported on November 1.

The history of whisky making in Canada can be traced back to 1769, when the first distillery was built in what is now Quebec. In 1890, Canada became the first country in the world to mandate whisky production. In 2018, Canadian whisky sales rose by 0.4% to 28.3 million nine-litre cases globally, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. In the US – the category’s biggest market – 17.4m nine-litre cases of Canadian whisky were sold, generating nearly US$2 billion in revenue for distillers, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

“We’re starting to see that Canadian whisky is in a huge renaissance; there’s tons of renewed interest in the category,” says Chris Thompson, North American brand ambassador for Ontario’s Forty Creek. “For decades there were only five or six major players, and now ...More info on site
