Brewery news USA: Craft beer forecast to represent about 12% of total beer market in the US this year
Craft beer‘s days of heady double-digit growth may be over, but it is expected to produce volume growth of 5 to 6 percent this year and outperform the broader category, according to a new report.

Susquehanna analyst Pablo Zuanic said craft beer is forecast to represent about 12 percent of total beer volume this year, up slightly from 2016 levels. He‘s basing the information on briefings with the Brewer Association‘s chief economist, Bart Watson.

Most of the new volume growth this year within the craft beer segment will come from the smaller breweries, the analyst said. Also, he points out that retail shelves won‘t help much since stores are not adding space to the packaged category.

The analyst said what‘s growing is essentially “concentrated mainly among the local and regional players,” not the big-name brands like Boston Beer and Sierra Nevada.

As a result, Zuanic wrote that he‘s “somewhat concerned” when it comes to medium-term outlook. Last month, Boston Beer reported weaker-than-expected revenue as its flagship Sam Adams and Angry Orchard brands remained challenged.

“Certain big breweries are struggling to maintain volume and any kind of growth,” said Jeremy Cowan, founder of Shmaltz Brewing, an upstate New York-based boutique brewer. However, he said, there‘s still ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev announces acquisition of remaining 68.8% of Craft Brew Alliance
Anheuser-Busch InBev and Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) announced on November 11 that the world’s largest beer company will acquire the remaining 68.8% of CBA that it did not own for $16.50 per share in cash, Brewbound reported.

The deal is expected to close in 2020, subject to customary closing conditions, including approval of the CBA shareholders unaffiliated with AB InBev and regulatory approvals.

At the close of trading Monday, CBA stock was valued at $7.33 per share. However, in after-hours trading, the stock jumped to more than $16 per share.

“By combining our resources, our talented teammates and dynamic brands, we will look to nurture the growth of CBA’s existing portfolio as we continue investing in innovation to meet the changing needs of today’s beverage consumers, all while delivering certainty of value to our shareholders,” Andy Thomas, the CEO of CBA, said in a press release.

“Our partnership with CBA goes back many years and we look forward to supporting CBA as they continue to bring great products to beer drinkers across the U.S.,” Anheuser-Busch CEO Michel Doukeris added in the release.

CBA brands include Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook, Omission, Square Mile Cider, Wynwood Brewing, Cisco Brewers and Appalachian Mountain Brewery, as well as ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel acquires 30% of Colorado’s Avery Brewing
One of Spain‘s leading beer brewers acquired a 30 percent stake in Avery Brewing Co. as part of a mutual decision to help the Boulder brewery‘s future growth, the Stock Daily Dish reported on November 12.

Mahou San Miguel and Avery Brewing announced the deal on November 12, with the Spanish brewer saying the partnership is part of its own vision to explore international opportunities by partnering with locals who know their markets.

“We share the commitment with the communities in which we are present, our long-term vision, concern for the sustainability and well-being of individuals and our aim of doing things right, placing the consumer always at the centre of our decisions,” Eduardo Petrossi, CEO of Madrid-based Mahou San Miguel, said in a statement. “This operation strengthens us as the driving Spanish brewer behind the craft sector and will reinforce our positioning in the United States.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. But Avery founder Adam Avery will continue to run the Boulder operation and now can tap the expertise of Mahou San Miguel as needed. Avery and his father, Larry, founded the company in 1993. The Averys are the only other investors and remain as majority owners.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Local craft brewers increasing market share in British Columbia
An analysis of beer sales for British Columbia’s top 10 producers shows that local craft brewers’ share of the province’s beer market is growing, PrinceGeorgeMatters.com reported on November 10.

In 2013, eight local producers accounted for 21.7% of the total sales for the top 10 companies. In 2019, their share was 31.4%.

This market increase becomes even more apparent when comparing the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Board’s (BCLDB) sales growth of micro-brewers with the industry giants of Labatt Breweries of Canada and Molson Coors.

Over the seven-year period since 2012, growth of most craft brewers in the top 10 overshadowed that of Labatt and Molson Coors.

Labatt had the largest growth in sales out of the two major brewers: up 7.24% to C$262.7 million in 2019 from C$244.9 million in 2012. Molson Coors recorded 5% sales growth over the same period.

After Molson Coors and Labatt, Pacific Western Brewing Co. recorded the smallest sales growth over the same period (12.3%).

Granville Island Brewing Co. was the only brewery in the top 10 to suffer a drop (25.7%) in BCLDB sales over the period.

The growth in B.C. craft breweries appears to be taking market share from Molson Coors and Labatt.

In the four years following 2012, sales for ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Tailout Brewing opens its doors in Castlegar
A new brewery dedicated to celebrating “all outdoor adventures in Southern British Columbia, with world class skiing and fishing at the top of the list” is now open in Castlegar, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 8.

Tailout Brewing has been founded by a team that includes Hedin Nelson-Chorney, Kent Kristensen, Mike Davidson, Bruce Watson, and Travis Verbeek, all of them lovers of the local outdoorsy lifestyle.

Open since November 2nd in a location that was previously home to Banjo’s Pub, Tailout’s opening line-up of beers includes Headwaters Pale Ale, Doggon’it ESB, Single Spey IPA, and Bombi Blonde, with the latter also available in a version infused with cold brew coffee and served on nitro.

Tailout Brewing is located at 1810 8th Ave. in Castlegar, and is open from 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM daily except for Tuesday.

Brewery news USA, TX: Tusculum Brewing Co. already open in Boerne
The historic H.O. Adler Building in downtown Boerne is now home to the newest Hill Country brewery. The Tusculum Brewing Co. started pouring out the first wave of freshly made beers in early September, mySanAntonio.com reported on November 7.

Tusculum was the original name of the community that was later renamed Boerne in 1852. The brewery has an ownership group that includes seven people, including head brewer Tripp Mathews, who live in the area and who all share a common love of beer.

The brewery has a tasting room accessible through the front of the building, as well as a beer garden, brewhouse and second bar area in the back. Patrons are directed where to go for a fresh cold one based on staffing and the weather (front when cold, back when warm).

There is room for 12 beers on the tap lines in both bar areas, with nine currently available. Flavors range from a lineup of pale ales to a Mexican lager and a few dark beers and porters.

“We started with this plan under the notion that there was plenty of opportunity to play a part in turning Boerne into a destination beer community,” co-owner Paige Mathews said.

Brewery news USA, SC: Hazelwood Brewing holds grand opening in Lexington
After a long wait, the taps are finally flowing at Lexington’s newest brewery, The State reported on November 8.

Hazelwood Brewing held its grand opening on Saturday, November 2, more than a year after owner Matt Rodgers had started planning to open the new brewery at Lexington’s Old Mill Pond.

The bar is located in the former boiler room of the old mill on Lexington’s Main Street, where Hazelwood boasts 10 rotating taps plus a wine selection.

“After a month of running a little under the radar we are ready to show off a little bit,” Hazelwood posted on Instagram ahead of Saturday’s kickoff event. “We’ve got a nice tap list now and a special cask the day of the grand opening.”

Rodgers started planning to open the brewery as far back as 2018, to coincide with repairs to the Old Mill Pond dam. The dam failed during the floods that swamped the Midlands in 2015. When the dam is repaired and the pond refilled, the brewery will be powered by the mill’s hydro-turbine.

“We have the turbine from the original textile mill, so we can be on our own power and off the grid,” said Rodgers. “Once it’s up and running, we’ll be one ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Ellison Brewing Co. opens new Indianapolis location
Aaron Hanson is a former automotive engineer with a drive to succeed in the craft beer industry, NNY360 reported.

Ellison Brewing Co. opened on November 9 at 501 S. Madison Ave., Indianapolis, serving beer in glasses decorated with images of gears in a nod to Hanson’s years of designing automotive powertrains in his home state of Michigan.

He co-founded Ellison four years ago, and the Indianapolis brewpub is the company’s first site outside Lansing, Michigan.

Ellison is filling a spot previously occupied by Tow Yard Brewing — an Indianapolis company with a car-influenced name that sputtered out after filing for bankruptcy in 2018.

Hanson said he’s confident Ellison can thrive in proximity to Lucas Oil Stadium, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Lilly headquarters and expanding CityWay apartments.

“It’s just a really nice spot,” he said. “It’s not Fountain Square or Mass Ave., but those areas are running out of space pretty quickly.”

The retired U.S. Marine is a pilot who often flies from Lansing to Indianapolis. Ironically, he’s befriended aerospace engineers who work for Rolls-Royce — a company traditionally associated with luxury cars — across the street from the new Ellison brewpub.

Hanson mentioned two Rolls-Royce employees who live in apartments above Ellison: “They said, ‘We’ve been up against ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Closed Ammo Brewing holds sale to unload most of its brewing equipment
Petersburg has lost one of its two breweries.

Ammo Brewing, a brewpub at 235 N. Market St., closed for business in August and this weekend held a sale to unload most of its brewing and restaurant equipment. It had been in business for about three years, RichmondBizSense reported on November 11.

Calls and emails sent last week to Ammo owner Terry Ammons went unreturned.

Ammo’s closure leaves Trapezium Brewing Co. as the city’s lone brewery. Trapezium also opened in 2016, about a half-mile from Ammo at 423 Third St.

Ammo announced its closure in an Aug. 4 column in Virginia Craft Beer Magazine.

The Ammons family wrote in the column that, “Ammo Brewing has from the first been a family operation and now family responsibilities have become too compelling to manage at the same time that we are operating a brewery and restaurant.”

Petersburg property records show Ammons continues to own the brewery’s building, which it shares with his architecture and design firm, StudioAmmons. He’s owned the property since 2004.

Ammo’s closure is at least the third regional brewery closure announced in recent months. Charlottesville-based Champion Brewing in August closed its Richmond taproom at 401 E. Grace St. downtown. Richmond-based Hardywood is preparing to close its Charlottesville ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Innis & Gunn hoping to secure £3 million in investment for new Edinburgh brewery
Scottish craft beer maker Innis & Gunn has announced plans to secure a major cash injection to drive proposals for a new Edinburgh brewery, the Yahoo Finance UK reported on November 11.

The company hopes to secure £3 million in investment to fund the new brewery as well as continue to open bars in Scotland.

Innis & Gunn said its three current bars in Scotland have prospered amid the recent surge in popularity for craft beer and it hopes to open another two sites annually over the next three years.

Founder and master brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp said the new brewery is in the next stage in the company’s evolution after rapid growth in beer sales.

The launch, which the firm claims will be the first major brewery in Edinburgh for 150 years, is expected to open in 2021 and create around 30 jobs.

Innis & Gunn plans to fund the expansion with its third crowdfunding campaign, to raise £3 million from supporters of the brand through funding platform Seedrs.

Growth has continued over the past three years since its previous funding campaign, pushing its sales to more than £25 million in turnover and almost 21 million pints of beer in total.

Mr Gunn Sharp said: “There ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & Ireland: Grolsch beer no longer available in the UK and Ireland
Beer brand Grolsch, with its distinctive swingtop bottle caps, will no longer be sold in the UK after 35 years on store shelves, the Sailisbury Journal reported on November 9.

Bosses at parent company Asahi agreed to end a brewing contract with Molson Coors after the larger was "delisted" by Tesco and Asda in its supermarkets.

A spokesperson for Asahi said: "As a result [of the end of the brewing deal] the Grolsch brand is no longer available in the UK and Ireland."

Asked if Grolsch – founded in in Holland in 1615 – will return to the UK and Ireland, an Asahi spokesperson declined to comment.

The decision was first reported in The Grocer UK, which added that pub industry sources revealed supplies of the lager had dried up.

It is thought that Grolsch, which was once a popular choice with drinkers partially because of its unique bottle design, has been hit by the rise in popularity of craft beer, lower alcohol alternatives and cheaper rivals.

Asahi acquired the Grolsch brand from Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.

Brewery news Thailand: ThaiBev celebrates 25th anniversary of its Chang beer with new Chang cold brew lager
Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) on November 7 celebrated the 25th anniversary of its popular Chang beer with an event at Bangkok’s Factoria restaurant and toasted its birthday with Chang cold brew lager, which is being produced especially for the silver jubilee, the Buriram Times reported.

Kosit Suksingha, the company’ chief executive for Beer Business Thailand and chief of the Supply Chain Management group, said the new product has been well received. “Its success is also a success in terms of promoting the relationship between our brand and consumers in line with our ‘Chang, Fulfilling Your Friendship’.”

Chang cold brew lager is made with 100-per-cent malt using the cold brew process – beer filtration under sub- zero temperature. The process produces a beer with that’s very different in taste and fragrance from other brews.

The highlight of the night was a talk by ThaiBev’s experienced brew master, who explained about the new product and showed how to best enjoy the drink from pouring to supping.

Last month, the company’s president and chief executive, Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi said that ThaiBev will focus on raising business values, combining products to increase market capital and collaborating with global partners in innovative, healthy cannabis-based products as it looks towards 2025.
