Mexico: Craft beer sector booming in Mexico
|
Word from Mexico is that its craft beer scene is booming big time, both within Mexico and beyond its borders. Production is increasing by more than 50 percent each year according to the 2018-19 Annual Industry Report from Mexican craft beer association ACERMEX revealed at Cerveza México 2019, the Craft Brewing Business reported on November 13.
Cerveza México, which took place in Mexico City this past October, marked its 10th year as an interactive space where visitors benefit from the most complete experience in Mexico focused on the World of Beer. The 2019 edition featured more than 150 craft beer producers, importers and exporters, as well as ingredients and equipment suppliers.
Although equivalent to 0.23% of the 119,970,320 hectolitres of the total market, which includes the multinational-owned Cervecería Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo, independent breweries are experiencing significant annual growth. According to Matías Vera-Cruz Dutrenit, Head of Statistics for AcerMex and founder of Mexico City-based craft beer business Cervecería Monstruo de Agua, between 2011 when volumes totaled 10,594 hectolitres and 2018, the industry has achieved an average annual production growth rate of 53%.

Japan: All four leading brewers report drop in October beer sales
|
Sales of beer and beer-like products for all four major domestic brewers fell in Japan last month from a year earlier after the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike, data showed on November 13.
A special boost from the Rugby World Cup, which brought many foreign visitors to Japan, was more than offset by lower demand after a surge that preceded the tax increase that rose to 10 percent from 8 percent.
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. and Kirin Holdings Co. both posted a sales drop of 13 percent. Sales decreased 8 percent for Sapporo Holdings Ltd. and 6 percent for Suntory Beer Ltd.
Most of their mainstay beer products performed poorly. Asahi’s Super Dry saw sales fall by 12 percent, Kirin’s Ichibanshibori by 9 percent and Sapporo’s Black Label by 7 percent.
Meanwhile, sales of Suntory’s The Premium Malt’s remained flat, helped by the success of a marketing promotion to sell the beer with snacks.
Sales of Heineken beer more than doubled. Kirin Brewery Co., a subsidiary of Kirin Holdings, produces and sells the beer in Japan on behalf of Dutch brewer Heineken NV, the rugby tournament’s official sponsor.

Ireland: Massive half billion litres of stout produced in Ireland last year accounted for 63% of all beer output
|
A massive half billion litres of stout were produced in Ireland last year, the Irish Mirror reported on November 13.
Guinness, Beamish, Murphy’s and local stouts account for 63 per cent of all beer production in the country.
And much of it goes abroad, making Ireland the seventh biggest exporter of beer in Europe, with its creamy pints heading to over 60 countries.
And according to the representative group Drinks Ireland, stout is Ireland’s second favourite beer behind lager, accounting for 29.3% of all beer consumed in 2018.
“A whopping 500 million litres of stout was produced in Ireland in 2018, to be enjoyed by consumers at home and abroad, demonstrating the sheer size of this exciting and dynamic homegrown sector,” said Jonathan McDade, Head of Drinks Ireland|Beer.
While stout’s share of the beer market has declined from 35.5% in 2009, it is still a high percentage share compared to other beer markets, the group added.
Like ale, around 80% of stout consumed in Ireland is in on-trade in pubs and restaurants, compared to 55% of lagers, revealed Checkout magazine.
Previous surveys have shown that lager is increasingly the beer of choice in Ireland, while craft and non-alcoholic brews are also carving out market niches.

USA: Diageo unveils new Guinness Stock Ale Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels
|
Diageo has unveiled a new Guinness ale the company is describing as a “hearty and full-bodied beer” and it comes with a hefty kick at 10% ABV, the Irish Post reported on November 12.
Guinness Stock Ale Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels is a blend of Guinness Barleywine and a Guinness Imperial Stout – as in keeping with standard stock ales, which are usually a blend of two distinctive styles.
Both beers have been aged in Bulleit Bourbon barrels before being blended together for the limited-edition brew.
Described as a “hearty and full-bodied beer with notes of nutty chocolate, raisins, roasted barley and sweet dark fruit” the brew has an ABV of 10% and will be sold in 11.2oz bottles.
But before anyone in the UK or Ireland gets a little too excited, it should be mentioned that this particular Guinness incarnation has been made exclusively for the US at the new Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore.

EU: Heineken to sponsor next year’s UEFA Euro tournament
|
Dutch brewer Heineken has announced it is to be the ‘Official Beer Partner’ of next year’s UEFA Euro tournament and has extended its sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League, The Drinks Business reported on November 13.
The two separate agreements means the brewer is now the major beer sponsor of Europe’s leading club and international football tournaments.
Its partnership with the UEFA Champions League is already 25 years old and the new deal extends its sponsorship through to 2024.
The new Euro partnership will see Heineken given exclusive pouring rights across the 12 European cities the tournament is being played in (its home city of Amsterdam, as well as: Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and St Petersburg), in addition to branding in the stadiums and launching a pan-European TV and digital marketing campaign featuring former French international and Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry.

UK: Growers urged to move fast to secure contracts for their crops
|
UK growers who are considering cutting back on their winter cropping area due to the wet autumn and switching to spring options will need to move fast to secure a contract, FarmersWeekly reported on November 14.
Rebecca Gibson, Agrii’s seed manager for the North, said the company is already completely sold out of spring wheat, normally one of the last spring options to go, as growers try to fulfil existing contracts.
Similarly, although seed is still available, spring malting barley is unlikely to be a highly profitable option due to the volume that will be grown now that the window for drilling winter barley has closed, driving down premiums.
However, for those growers who are not obligated to fulfil existing contracts there are some more niche options available.
One crop with contracts still available is spring naked oats, which offer between £30-45/t over AHDB feed-wheat price, depending on when they are moved.
“Naked oats provide a break crop, they are very competitive against blackgrass and with a contract you have the security of growing for an end market,” said Ms Gibson.
More niche options include tic beans for pigeon feed and brown linseed and canary seed contracts for bird food mixes.

EU: Euronext planning futures contracts for durum wheat and feed barley next year

Euronext plans to launch futures contracts for durum wheat and animal-feed barley next year, extending its coverage of agricultural markets, the European exchange’s head of commodities said on November 13.
Euronext is developing cash-settled contracts, without physical delivery, for several agricultural products, with the key ones being durum and feed barley, Nicholas Kennedy told Reuters.
The move is in line with plans Euronext outlined last month to use cash settlement to expand a commodity business that currently offers physical delivery of crops like wheat.
Instead of using delivery at the expiry of futures to connect them with physical markets, cash settlement uses a physical price benchmark.
“There is demand for products that are simpler but with the same security,” Kennedy said on the sidelines of the Global Grain conference.
“We are going to do these contracts for feed barley and durum.”
The timing of the launch next year would depend on when a new trading platform being developed by Euronext was up and running, he said.
Euronext would work with a partner to obtain price benchmarks for durum and feed barley but it was too early to give details, he added.
