Brewery news Mexico: Craft beer sector booming in Mexico
Word from Mexico is that its craft beer scene is booming big time, both within Mexico and beyond its borders. Production is increasing by more than 50 percent each year according to the 2018-19 Annual Industry Report from Mexican craft beer association ACERMEX revealed at Cerveza México 2019, the Craft Brewing Business reported on November 13.

Cerveza México, which took place in Mexico City this past October, marked its 10th year as an interactive space where visitors benefit from the most complete experience in Mexico focused on the World of Beer. The 2019 edition featured more than 150 craft beer producers, importers and exporters, as well as ingredients and equipment suppliers.

Although equivalent to 0.23% of the 119,970,320 hectolitres of the total market, which includes the multinational-owned Cervecería Moctezuma and Grupo Modelo, independent breweries are experiencing significant annual growth. According to Matías Vera-Cruz Dutrenit, Head of Statistics for AcerMex and founder of Mexico City-based craft beer business Cervecería Monstruo de Agua, between 2011 when volumes totaled 10,594 hectolitres and 2018, the industry has achieved an average annual production growth rate of 53%.

ACERMEX surveyed more than 40% of the estimated 940 breweries currently operating in the country and shows that annual craft beer ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Craft alcohol industry employs more people than traditional domestic breweries
There are twice as many people employed in the craft alcohol industry than with traditional domestic breweries, according to numbers from craft alcohol producers across New Brunswick, CBC.ca reported on November 12.

CBC News contacted more than 70 producers of craft alcoholic beverages as well as traditional brewers. Fifty replied, reporting a combined total of around 660 workers, most of which are full-time.

According to those numbers, at least 440 people are employed by craft operations.

More traditional brewers employ around 225 people. That includes Moosehead Breweries, with approximately 180 workers in the province and Molson-Coors with 45.

"We're really a desirable location to work for, a lot of cool people," said Sean Dunbar, president of the New Brunswick Craft Alcohol Producers Association and owner of Picaroons Traditional Ales.

"So, it doesn't surprise me. And the growth of our sector of the beer industry has been, maybe, meteoric."

Dunbar has 55 employees, one of the larger operations in the province. But he's not the biggest. The Pump House Brewery in Moncton has 90 employees, most of which are full-time.

But the majority of craft brewers in the province are tiny, many employing fewer than 10 people, with several operating with just one or two.

Dunbar isn't ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Marion Brewing Company already open in Marion
A Marion brewery is now serving up new craft brews every weekend, the Marion Star reported on November 12.

The Marion Brewing Company, 151 S. Main St., opened in late September and is now pouring locally brewed beer Friday and Saturday evenings.

"Everybody seems to really like the beer," said brewer Joe VanBuskirk. "We're selling it much faster than we expected."

VanBuskirk and business partner Tim Chambers have been working to open the brewery since 2017, when they purchased 151 S. Main St. and began renovations, all while working their day jobs.

The business partners wanted the taproom to be a laid-back place for craft beer enthusiasts and people who just enjoy a good beer.

VanBuskirk tries to keep a rotating cast of beers on tap, with new styles and flavors every weekend, he said. The taproom has bar seating with TVs lining the north wall, as well as couches and barrel tables with stool seats. There are board games for people to play and an arcade game machine.

Business has been good since the brewery opened several weeks ago, they say, especially given the limited hours from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

"We're already talking about expansion which at least to me, happened a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AK: Alaska brewers pushing back against alcohol sale restrictions
Even after a bill aimed at updating Alaska's alcohol laws was introduced during the last legislative session, some brewers are pushing back against restrictions that they say inhibit small business growth, KTUU.com reported on November 11.

Under Alaska law, businesses with a brewery retail license - which costs $1,000 annually - cannot serve brewed beverages after 8 p.m. and cannot allow live entertainment, televisions or other recreational or gaming opportunities. The maximum amount of beer a brewery can sell to a customer for off-site consumption is about five gallons.

"I think the entertainment rule right now is probably the most impactful. That's the one that's been front and center, but the hours restrictions really tough on us," said Josh Hegna, co-founder of Girdwood Brewing Company. "That 8:00 closing time is very challenging down here in Girdwood when we have people coming from work and they get back to Girdwood by 6:30 or 7:00, have dinner. By that time brewery's closed."

Some breweries have worked around the restrictions of brewery retail license by obtaining a beverage dispensary license, which is the same license bars hold, or a brewpub license. Hegna says that option is not viable for Girdwood Brewing because it is not only ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: RagnaRöck Northern Brewing Company already open in St. Anthony
The newest craft brewery in Newfoundland has announced its opening in St. Anthony, a small town near the tip of the province’s Great Northern Peninsula, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 11.

RagnaRöck Northern Brewing Company has been founded by brewer Brad Simms, his wife Jennifer Simms, and business partner Lauren Smithson.

Located in the West Street Clock Shop, a historic building that has undergone extensive renovations to house the brewery and other small businesses and tenants, RagnaRöck opened last Friday, November 8th, and features a 6-hectoliter brewing system, a taproom with capacity for approximately 150 people, and a small stage for live entertainment.

RagnaRöck had eight beers on tap at opening – four of its own, including Tabity Wit and Da Bold n’ Beautiful Blonde Ale, and four guest taps from Crooked Feeder Brewing – all available in samples, flights, and pints, plus growlers to take home the house-brewed beers. Food is also available at select times from the Northern Wings food truck adjacent to the brewery.

RagnaRöck Northern Brewing is located at 223-227 West Street in St. Anthony. Ongoing business hours are still to be confirmed, but should be announced soon via the brewery’s Facebook page.

Brewery news USA, MT: Bridger Brewing planning second location in Three Forks
Bridger Brewing announced on November 12 plans for a second location in Three Forks that will include, along with an additional brewery, a live-music amphitheater, grill, taproom, and distribution facility, KTVQ Billings News reported.

The Bozeman-based brewery said in a press release groundbreaking is planned for spring 2020, and the new location will be near the Copper City Trails on Highway 287 in Broadwater County.

"We are looking forward to participating in the local community of Three Forks and really getting to know our new neighbors,” Brewmaster and Director of Operations Daniel Pollard said in the release.

Pollard added the new facility will help Bridger Brewing streamline its keg and can distribution while offering a "destination brewery experience."

According to Bridger's promotional landing page , the new production brewery will allow for the canning and distribution of its beers. The restaurant will feature familiar favorites from the Bozeman location's flagship menu, along with expanded offerings at the new location.

Co-owner David Breck said in the press release informal talks with area entertainment promoters are in the early stages for the new location's state-of-the-art amphitheater.

“Live outdoor music will definitely be a part of the draw at our second location. However, any relationship or arrangement with any ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Diageo unveils new Guinness Stock Ale Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels
Diageo has unveiled a new Guinness ale the company is describing as a “hearty and full-bodied beer” and it comes with a hefty kick at 10% ABV, the Irish Post reported on November 12.

Guinness Stock Ale Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels is a blend of Guinness Barleywine and a Guinness Imperial Stout – as in keeping with standard stock ales, which are usually a blend of two distinctive styles.

Both beers have been aged in Bulleit Bourbon barrels before being blended together for the limited-edition brew.

Described as a “hearty and full-bodied beer with notes of nutty chocolate, raisins, roasted barley and sweet dark fruit” the brew has an ABV of 10% and will be sold in 11.2oz bottles.

But before anyone in the UK or Ireland gets a little too excited, it should be mentioned that this particular Guinness incarnation has been made exclusively for the US at the new Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore.

“One of the really cool things about brewing a stock ale is that you actually get to brew two completely separate beers with unique traits and their own identities, and then blend them together to create a beer that takes on some of both, but also has ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Handmap Brewing set to open its doors in Battle Creek in February
Battle Creek residents will get to experience a new brewery this winter, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported on November 12.

Handmap Brewing is on pace to open their doors in February, according to co-owners Jennifer Brown and Chris McCleary.

As of right now, the brewery, located at 15 Carlyle St. in downtown Battle Creek at the newly renovated Record Box building, has the frame of the bar in place, the beer cooler built and installed, most of their brewing equipment in place and some of the painting done.

"Some of the toughest parts are done, which is nice," Brown said. "But there's still a lot to do. We're busy."

The brewery also has most of their licensing complete, but they are still waiting on their final health inspection.

The Record Box Loft event space is set to open in the next couple of weeks. Owners Cody and Caitlynn Newman recently announced they are hosting musician Benny Bassett for a concert on the upstairs floor of the building on November 22.

The brewery will remain under construction after the event space opens.

“There’s been some confusion that people think we are opening at the same time as the [the Record Box Loft] upstairs, which isn’t the case,” Brown ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Faklandia Brewery finally finds a home of its own
After brewing its beer at home and on other breweries' systems for three years, Faklandia Brewery – launched in July 2016 by Nate Fakler and Ben Mantay – has finally found a home of its own, OnMilwaukee.com reported on November 11.

The two hope to convert a former industrial space at 2525 E. Crawford Ave. in St. Francis into a brewery and taproom by spring.

A Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 toward the project has been launched.

Fakler, worked in a hotel kitchen in California and, later, took part in the Barley to Barrel program at The Crafter Space after getting into homebrewing with his father.

He decided to create a unique "interactive storybook brewery," for which the two are creating an accompanying board game and a geocaching component.

"I am writing a fantasy story that all of the beers are places, people or things in Faklandia," Fakler told me earlier in the year.

"Faklandia is a realm beyond any you have ever known," reads the Kickstarter page. "Vast landscapes of verdant green jungles, arid deserts swirling with sand, and jagged mountain ridges all come together in our liquid landscapes. Characters such as the Lizard Wizard, Princess Salamandra, and the vile Nox Atra come to life ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: The Iron Exchange Tavern & Brewery coming to Maple Plain soon
Maple Plain will soon be getting its very own brewpub, The Iron Exchange Tavern & Brewery, The Growler reported on November 11.

Complete with house-brewed beer, guest taps, a full food menu, and a house cocktail program, the project located at 1500 Howard Avenue is led by wife-husband duo Mary and Todd Murley, with Todd working as the head brewer.

For the past two years, he’s been learning under brewer Kristen England of Bent Brewstillery in preparation to open his own “dream brewpub.” Iron Exchange will have 20 tap lines with a custom draft tower designed by Atom Pechman of Form From Form, a Minneapolis-based art studio that specializes in three-dimensional design. On the production side, Todd is starting with a 10-barrel brewhouse with six fermentors and 10 serving tanks.

Specific house beers have yet to be announced, but Todd promises a wide array alongside guest taps pouring beer, cider, hard seltzer, and wine. “I like a variety of styles and I wanted to do the brewpub model as it gives a lot of flexibility in what you brew,” he says. “I’m partial to hops, so we’ll for sure have a couple hop-focused beers on tap at all times. We’ll probably do a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Gilman Brewing Company expands to second location
Brewing out of a 9,000 square feet former automotive radiator shop converted into a state-of-the-art production brewery and taproom in West Berkeley, Gilman Brewing Company expands to a second location with a new taproom and gastropub now open in Daly City (2001 Junipero Serra Blvd), TheFullPint.com reported on November 7.

Gilman Brewing’s Daly City taproom is conveniently located one block south of the Daly City BART station and next to the Century 20 movie theater. In early 2020, Gilman Brewing is set to open its third taproom on Main Street in downtown Pleasanton, California.

Opening on Berkeley’s thoroughfare Gilman Street in 2015, Gilman Brewing has amassed a rabid following of craft beer fans through its hard work and grit churning out an exceptional lineup of rotating beers. Gilman Brewing thrives as one of the top East Bay craft breweries with its premium IPAs, double IPAs, hazy IPAs, tart sours, fruit-forward beers, and a distinguished roster of singular California-inspired Belgian and saison styles. Its farmhouse ales and saisons are Gilman’s most decorated beers, winning awards across the country.

In 2019 alone, Gilman has garnered more than 16 medals including five Gold medals at the California Craft Brewers Cup, California State Fair Commercial Craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Empire Farm Brewery in Cazenovia shut down for rebranding and reopening as Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. by next spring
The Empire Farm Brewery in Cazenovia, one of the largest craft breweries in Upstate New York, has been shut down by the new owners who bought it at a bankruptcy auction last month, Syracuse.com reported on November 12.

The big brewhouse, tap room and restaurant closed on November 10 but is expected to reopen by the spring as Meier’s Creek Brewing Co., said Colby Clark, vice president of Feldmeier Equipment of DeWitt. Feldmeier, a creditor in the bankruptcy, put in the top bid to buy the property and equipment at an auction supervised by a bankruptcy court judge.

“We are excited to rebrand and reopen (the brewery),” Clark said. “Rebranding it and doing it our way is the goal.”

Empire owner David Katleski filed for bankruptcy reorganization in August, citing about $10 million in debts. Feldmeier’s purchase did not include Empire’s “intellectual” property - the name of the brewery, trademarks for the beers, etc. Those are held by an affiliate company owned by Katleski.

All but about five of Empire’s 100 employees were let go in the past few days, sources familiar with situation told syracuse.com. Among those let go was Katleski himself, sources said.

In a press release sent out on November 12, the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Mill Creek Brewing Co closes down in Nolensville
Nolensville brewing company Mill Creek Brewing Co announced permanent closure on its Facebook page on November 11.

The company posted a letter by Chris Going, founder and CEO of the brewery. The letter states that Mill Creek employees were informed Friday, November 8 of the closure and the company will be filing for bankruptcy.

The letter continues to say it was a tough decision but after exploring other options, they were left with no choice but to close their doors.

“Since the beginning, our brand has centered around 4 words: Less Fuss More Beer. This was more than a slogan to us; it was a mission. In a world and industry that all too often places the focus on the liquid in your glass, we sought to create an approachable beer brand that would be so easy drinking and great tasting that it would help people to focus less on the judgment of the liquid and more on the truly important things in life: conversation, friendship, laughter, community,” shared Chris Going, CEO and Founder of Mill Creek.

At the end of the message, Going mentioned there might be hope for the brand to continue.

Stating, “Let’s hope someone still sees the value of this thing ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: All four leading brewers report drop in October beer sales
Sales of beer and beer-like products for all four major domestic brewers fell in Japan last month from a year earlier after the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike, data showed on November 13.

A special boost from the Rugby World Cup, which brought many foreign visitors to Japan, was more than offset by lower demand after a surge that preceded the tax increase that rose to 10 percent from 8 percent.

Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. and Kirin Holdings Co. both posted a sales drop of 13 percent. Sales decreased 8 percent for Sapporo Holdings Ltd. and 6 percent for Suntory Beer Ltd.

Most of their mainstay beer products performed poorly. Asahi’s Super Dry saw sales fall by 12 percent, Kirin’s Ichibanshibori by 9 percent and Sapporo’s Black Label by 7 percent.

Meanwhile, sales of Suntory’s The Premium Malt’s remained flat, helped by the success of a marketing promotion to sell the beer with snacks.

Sales of Heineken beer more than doubled. Kirin Brewery Co., a subsidiary of Kirin Holdings, produces and sells the beer in Japan on behalf of Dutch brewer Heineken NV, the rugby tournament’s official sponsor.

The four Japanese brewers saw their sales increase roughly 10 to 20 percent in September. Officials of the ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Massive half billion litres of stout produced in Ireland last year accounted for 63% of all beer output
A massive half billion litres of stout were produced in Ireland last year, the Irish Mirror reported on November 13.

Guinness, Beamish, Murphy’s and local stouts account for 63 per cent of all beer production in the country.

And much of it goes abroad, making Ireland the seventh biggest exporter of beer in Europe, with its creamy pints heading to over 60 countries.

And according to the representative group Drinks Ireland, stout is Ireland’s second favourite beer behind lager, accounting for 29.3% of all beer consumed in 2018.

“A whopping 500 million litres of stout was produced in Ireland in 2018, to be enjoyed by consumers at home and abroad, demonstrating the sheer size of this exciting and dynamic homegrown sector,” said Jonathan McDade, Head of Drinks Ireland|Beer.

While stout’s share of the beer market has declined from 35.5% in 2009, it is still a high percentage share compared to other beer markets, the group added.

Like ale, around 80% of stout consumed in Ireland is in on-trade in pubs and restaurants, compared to 55% of lagers, revealed Checkout magazine.

Previous surveys have shown that lager is increasingly the beer of choice in Ireland, while craft and non-alcoholic brews are also carving out market niches.

UK growers who are considering cutting back on their winter cropping area due to the wet autumn and switching to spring options will need to move fast to secure a contract, FarmersWeekly reported on November 14.

Rebecca Gibson, Agrii’s seed manager for the North, said the company is already completely sold out of spring wheat, normally one of the last spring options to go, as growers try to fulfil existing contracts.

Similarly, although seed is still available, spring malting barley is unlikely to be a highly profitable option due to the volume that will be grown now that the window for drilling winter barley has closed, driving down premiums.

However, for those growers who are not obligated to fulfil existing contracts there are some more niche options available.

One crop with contracts still available is spring naked oats, which offer between £30-45/t over AHDB feed-wheat price, depending on when they are moved.

“Naked oats provide a break crop, they are very competitive against blackgrass and with a contract you have the security of growing for an end market,” said Ms Gibson.

More niche options include tic beans for pigeon feed and brown linseed and canary seed contracts for bird food mixes.

Barley news EU: Euronext planning futures contracts for durum wheat and feed barley next year
Euronext plans to launch futures contracts for durum wheat and animal-feed barley next year, extending its coverage of agricultural markets, the European exchange’s head of commodities said on November 13.

Euronext is developing cash-settled contracts, without physical delivery, for several agricultural products, with the key ones being durum and feed barley, Nicholas Kennedy told Reuters.

The move is in line with plans Euronext outlined last month to use cash settlement to expand a commodity business that currently offers physical delivery of crops like wheat.

Instead of using delivery at the expiry of futures to connect them with physical markets, cash settlement uses a physical price benchmark.

“There is demand for products that are simpler but with the same security,” Kennedy said on the sidelines of the Global Grain conference.

“We are going to do these contracts for feed barley and durum.”

The timing of the launch next year would depend on when a new trading platform being developed by Euronext was up and running, he said.

Euronext would work with a partner to obtain price benchmarks for durum and feed barley but it was too early to give details, he added.

Euronext previously made an unsuccessful attempt to develop a futures market for malting barley, the variety used ...More info on site
