THE BENEFITS OF CO2 EXTRACTION

ABSTRACT
The CO2 extract of hops is a well established hop product, where extraction takes place under supercritical conditions. It contains all hop compounds with brewing value, is easy to use and to store and the shelf life is exceptional. These Japanese Researchers looked into using CO2 extraction for other botanicals that can be used in brewing. Using gentle conditions (temperatures of 40 degrees Celcius), they performed supercritical CO2 extraction of lemon peel and coriander seeds. Changing the pressure of the CO2 resulted in different yields in hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. These extracts were used in the conditioning phase of the brewing process and yielded better flavour results than using the corresponding raw material in the whirlpool. This demonstrates that CO2 extraction is a powerful technology to make flavour compounds from different kinds of aromatic raw materials more accessible.

Brewery news USA, MI: Copper Hop Brewing Co. ready to try its hand in St. Clair Shores
Another new microbrewery is ready to try its hand in St. Clair Shores, where several brewers have opened in the last few years, the Crain’s Detroit Business reported on November 25.

Copper Hop Brewing Co. is expected to open on Greater Mack Avenue just south of Nine Mile Road sometime before Christmas, said co-owner Ryan Balicki.

He and business partners Jeremy Lewis and Shaun Koltuniak began brewing beer for the location this past weekend and are overseeing the final touches on a $250,000 build-out of the 4,800-square-foot space. They launched a Kickstarter campaign in September and raised $43,500 from thirsty supporters.

Once open, the microbrewery will operate a five-barrel system capable of spitting out 75,000 beers yearly. The 80-seat inside will be outfitted with reclaimed Canadian barnwood and copper. Garage doors will open to an outdoor patio when weather permits.

There will be no kitchen. Food can be brought in from elsewhere or purchased at on-site food trucks, but Copper Hop's sole focus is the beer. The business has obtained its microbrewers license and other permits. Its exact opening date depends on when the beer is ready, and Balicki said he's taking a lot of care to get it right.

"We're beer drinkers," Balicki said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Wild Barrel Brewing Co. opens Temecula location
San Marcos-based brewery, Wild Barrel Brewing Co., has opened a second location in Temecula, NBC 7 San Diego reported on November 26.

The 2,500 square foot tasting room opened Nov. 15 in a strip mall near the Promenade Temecula, according to reports. The tasting room has 16 beers on tap as of now, with plans to increase to 23 beers in coming weeks.

Wild Barrel Brewing Co. was founded in 2017 and primarily features sour beers and IPAs. The brewery also has barrel-aged sours, imperial stouts and barley wines.

Brewery news USA, TX: Meanwhile Brewing eyeing April 2020 opening in Southeast Austin
The pace of restaurant openings this fall has been slower than recent years, but breweries seem to be popping up quicker than ever. Hold Out Brewing, Batch Brewhouse, and Central Machine Works all debuted in the past few weeks, and on November 24, yet another brewery announced it is bubbling into Austin’s already bustling scene, the CultureMap Austin reported.

Meanwhile Brewing will introduce itself to Southeast Austin in April 2020, according to a release. The large, 3.7-acre lot at 3901 Promontory Point Dr. will house operations, a 250-plus seat taproom, and a private event space, while also giving kids plenty of room to roam around.

The project is helmed by Will Jaquiss and Nao Ohdera, both vets of Portland, Oregon’s award-winning Breakside Brewery. Their years of experience on the recipe and production sides of beer making will be reflected in the wide variety of styles they plan to brew, with a focus on sessionable, hoppy ales and wood-aged sours.

“We are primarily focused on draught beer [and] we hope to brew a total of 50 different styles of beer in our first year of operations,” explained Jaquiss via release. “In general, though, taste before style is our mantra. It may seem obvious, but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Harris Brewing gets approval to open nanobrewery
In a few months, you should be able to buy a fresh Harris Family beer straight from the tap, The Burg News reported on November 19.

That’s the good news.

However, it won’t be from the Harrisburg-based craft brewers own taps—at least not for now.

November 18, the city Zoning Hearing Board gave its unanimous approval for a zoning variance, allowing the company to begin brewing soon out of an industrial building at 1721 Holly St. on Allison Hill.

Harris Brewing co-owner Shaun Harris said that he expects to start operating sometime in early 2020, once he gets the final go-ahead from the PA Liquor Control Board.

The company, though, will begin as a wholesale-only brewer, meaning that it’ll make beer for other locations to serve. Harris said that they plan to operate as a “nanobrewery,” producing fewer than 500 barrels for the first year.

“Our operation is going to be very small at first,” Harris said.

The company, which would be the first black-owned brewery in Pennsylvania, will occupy less than 30 percent of the squat, brick industrial building on the corner of Holly and S. 18th streets, Harris said.

He said that the company will focus initially on supplying bars and restaurants in Harrisburg, especially in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Flounder Brewing and CW Brewing and Distillery teaming up to build new home in Hillsborough
A whole new and exciting experience for beer and whiskey lovers is coming to Hillsborough. The Hillsborough-based craft brewer, Flounder Brewing, and CW Brewing and Distillery, are teaming up to build their new home at Carriage Farm in the township, Patch.com reported on November 18.

Flounder Brewing recently received approval at the Nov. 6 Board of Adjustment meeting for this new venture at the farm at 2 Clerico Ln. in Hillsborough, just off Route 206.

Jeremy "Flounder" Lees, who owns and runs Flounder Brewing out of an industrial park at 1 Ilene Ct. in Hillsborough, is especially excited about giving customers a new and unique experience.

"I feel the need to have an experience," Lees said. "Have tours, beer and the agricultural experience. This will be an experience that is not just going to another industrial park to sample beer but instead have the production inside a historical building where everything tells a story."

Lees had been looking to separate himself in the craft beer world and is excited to be able to merge his brewing craft with agricultural.

This isn't a far jump for Lees as he has already been environmentally friendly. He recycles his used hops and grains and gives them to a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: All Grain Brewing Specialists decide to close down
What started as a hobby for a Topeka couple, turned into a thriving business and now they have decided to retire with hopes of handing the reins to a new generation, WIBW reported on November 22.

Walt Darling has made his own beer for as long as he can remember.

When the only place in town for supplies closed, it was difficult.

"We began driving to Kansas City to get supplies, and that's a long trip just to pick up some fairly inexpensive ingredients," Darling said.

With urging from members of his beer club, Walt and his wife Pam opened a home-brewing store out of their basement.

Seven years later, they never expected All Grain Brewing Specialists to be where it is now.

Darling said, "It kept expanding and right now we have over 500 different items in stock. So, the level of work is much higher than what we had ever anticipated."

Which is why the Darlings have decided to close the store at the end of the year.

"I've learned an incredible amount and we've been able to pass that on to other people, so it's been a lot of fun," Darling said.

They are stepping away even as interest in the hobby remains strong.

Darling said, "We ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Alta Brewing to close for good at month’s end
In the summer of 2017, John Bull opened the doors to Alta Brewing in Barrio Logan, San Diego. It was the community’s second brewery, following in the footsteps of Border X Brewing, and later joined by Thorn Brewing and the Attitude Brewing brewpub, westcoastersd.com reported on November 26.

Over the past two-plus years, the business has had some ups and downs. When original head brewer Brett Stampf departed Alta last summer, it temporarily closed, opening again several weeks later. On November 26, however, it was confirmed that Alta will shutter again at the end of the month, but this time it will be permanent.

“As of November 30, Alta Brewing will be closing. The business has been challenging [as we] try to recover after the original partnership failed,” says Bull. “There has been a lot of hard work and effort by the staff to keep the business running. Unfortunately, without a fairly large influx of capital, the business has little to no chance of succeeding. Continuing operations would only compound that.”

Chris Angel came aboard to take Stampf’s place last year, helming the company’s five-barrel brewhouse. In addition to producing house beers, that system fulfilled the requirements of a contract-brewing arrangement with ...More info on site

Barley news France: Crop ratings for wheat and barley fall sharply due to heavy rains
Crop ratings for French wheat and barley fell sharply last week while farmers made little progress with sowing and harvesting, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on November 22, suggesting heavy rain was continuing to affect field conditions.

An estimated 78% of soft wheat, France's main cereal crop, was rated good or excellent in the week to Nov. 18, down from 84% a week earlier and below an 82% score in the same week last year, FranceAgriMer's weekly crop report showed.

French farmers had completed 74% of soft wheat sowing for next year's harvest, up from 71% a week earlier but below the 97% progress seen a year ago, the report said.

Soft wheat sowing was running eight days behind the average pace of the past five years, it said.

Grain maize harvest progress also remained slow, with 88% of the crop gathered compared with 84% a week earlier.

The maize harvest was also showing an eight-day lag compared with the five-year average and was running 20 days behind last year's crop, when harvesting had already finished by the same stage.

Some analysts expect wet weather in France and other western European countries like Britain to reduce the winter wheat and barley area.

Whisky news World: Diageo taking advantage of changing consumer preferences
British distiller Diageo is dodging consumer confidence headwinds by taking advantage of trends in alcohol and drinking preferences, CEO Ivan Menezes told CNBC on November 21.

“We are benefiting from consumer trends where people are drinking better and want better brands and experiences,” he said in an interview.

Diageo, the world‘s largest spirits company, reported 7.5 percent growth in global sales in its latest results update. Receipts of tequila brands, which make up 3 percent of Diageo‘s net sales, spiked 29 percent, including double-digit growth in Don Julio and Casamigos labels in North America.

“It‘s part of this trend of people wanting more premium brands and enjoying the quality that‘s behind a Don Julio tequila,” Menezes said. “People are moving to spirits and cocktails in a bigger way from wine and beer, and people are trading up for more premium brands.”

The company also makes Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, and Captain Morgan labels.

As the partial shutdown of the U.S. government dragged through most of January, while markets worried about the outlook of 2019.

Menezes said the spirits industry is not immune to global economic and spending declines, but they‘re “better positioned” to weather the storm by following trends. Furthermore, sales grew 20 percent in China with ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Number of beer trademark registrations hits record high in 2018
The number of trademarks registered for beer in the UK has hit a record high in 2018, jumping 6% to 2,519, up from 2,372 in 2017, says RPC, the London City-headquartered law firm.

RPC says the continued boom in demand for craft beer and an increased range of low-alcohol beers has driven up the number of trademark registrations.

BrewDog, for example, now has over 130 trademarks registered in the UK, including for its Albino Squid Assassin and Dead Pony Club beers.

The craft beer boom has triggered a number of major breweries to launch their own range of craft-style beers often needing their own set of trademarks. Heineken recently launched a new brand, Maltsmiths, to try to take advantage of the craft beer boom and compete with craft breweries. AB InBev recently launched craft beer, Lisa, in the UK, and Marstons now offers Revisionist craft beer.

RPC adds that the rise in beer trademarks is being further driven by the demand for low-alcohol and alcohol-free beer, which has resulted in a proliferation of new low-alcohol beer brands. This demand is partly driven by younger generations, more of whom are going ‘teetotal’ or choosing to cut back on their alcohol intake for health purposes. UK ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech brewer Gambrinus to stop selling beer in plastic bottles
Gambrinus brewery will be the first major beer brand in the Czech Republic to stop selling beer in plastic bottles. Its parent company Plzeňský Prazdroj has announced that the brand will discontinue production of beer in PET bottles as of January 1, 2020, Expats.cz reported on November 26.

“Gambrinus has decided to go the way of common sense and stop producing more plastic where it is not needed. We also respond to the wishes of our consumers, for whom not only the quality of the product is important, but also what we make packaging from,” says Plzeňský Prazdroj’s marketing director Roman Trzaskalik.

He adds, “Czechs are a beer nation that still prefers bottled and draft beer.”

As a result, the brewery says it will reduce plastic production by 334 tonnes per year. Gambrinus will continue to be available to customers in glass bottles, cans, and barrels and beer tanks in pubs and restaurants.

Gambrinus beer in PET bottles is expected to disappear completely from shelves between January and February. In addition to ending sales of its PET bottles, Gambrinus will begin using 100% recycled plastic film for packing cans.

“Overall, Gambrinus will reduce plastic production by more than 330 tonnes in 2020 alone, which ...More info on site
