USA: Congress moving to extend by another year tax breaks for beer, wine and distilled spirits
|
The U.S. Congress is moving to extend by another year tax breaks for beer, wine and distilled spirits worth hundreds of millions of dollars that were initially approved as part of tax reform in 2017, Reuters reported on December 17.
Without the extension, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said it would have faced $275 million in higher taxes, while a beer industry group said it faced $130 million in higher taxes. One wine group said the bill will allow California wineries alone to avoid more than $150 million in higher taxes.
Bills to make the tax reductions permanent have overwhelming support in Congress. The House approved the spending bill on December 17 that includes the tax provisions, while the Senate is expected to follow suit.
Chris Swonger, who heads the Distilled Spirits Council, said in a statement the measure would provide "significant relief for craft distillers across the country who were facing a 400 percent tax increase beginning Jan. 1."
Jim McGreevy, president and CEO of the Beer Institute, said the beer industry supports 2.1 million U.S. jobs. He said the bill will provide brewers and beer importers "the certainty they need to continue growing their businesses, provide good-paying jobs across

Japan: Asahi Breweries to stop disclosing sales volume data

Asahi Breweries Ltd. said on December 17 that it will stop releasing monthly sales volume data for its beer and quasi-beer products this month, switching to the disclosure of the value of sales from January, Nippon.com reported.
The major Japanese beer maker is apparently intending to put more emphasis on boosting its profitability while moving out of the race for market share in terms of volume.
Some sources say Asahi Breweries, which has ranked top in the Japanese beer and quasi-beer market for nine straight years through 2018 but has recently been facing a sales slump, may be attempting to prevent its possible loss of the No. 1 status from being publicly known at a time when second-ranking Kirin Brewery Co. is rapidly catching up with the industry leader.
"We've pursued volume for a long time, but now need to change the mindset of our employees to maintain profits," Asahi Breweries President Kenichi Shiozawa said at a press conference in Tokyo.

USA: New Belgium Brewing’s employee owners vote in favour of selling company to Kirin-owned Lion Little World Beverages

New Belgium Brewing Company’s employee owners have voted in favor of selling the company to Kirin-owned Lion Little World Beverages despite human rights groups’ concerns over the Japanese beer giant’s business dealings in Myanmar, Brewbound.com reported on December 17.
New Belgium and Lion announced the proposed sale on November 19, with the Australasian beer company poised to acquire 100% of the Fort Collins, Colorado-headquartered brewery — the fourth largest Brewers Association-defined domestic craft brewery — in an all cash transaction. The deal’s value has been pegged at between $350 million and $400 million, according to Forbes.
The completion of the transaction was contingent on a vote of New Belgium’s employee owners after the institution of 100% employee-ownership in 2012. The deal has also cleared antitrust regulatory approval. The transaction is now expected to be finalized by the end of 2019, pending customary closing conditions.

Puerto Rico: Recognition of craft beer slowly growing in Puerto Rico
|
As recently as five years ago, the terms “craft beer”, “microbrew”, or even “cerveza artisanal” were not commonplace in Puerto Rico. They still aren’t: Costly import taxes, regulatory roadblocks, and natural disasters make running any business here challenging, let alone one most Puerto Ricans don’t see as a necessity, VinePair reported on December 16.
But thanks to establishments like La Taberna Lúpulo bar in Old San Juan, recognition of small-batch brewing is growing. To enter Lúpulo, meaning “hop” in Spanish, is to encounter the unexpected: Coolers are stuffed with the likes of Orval, and taps flow with Bell’s Hopslam. Co-owner Zalika Guillory has worked hard to get the most sought-after mainland craft brands and Trappist imports from Europe. Mostly, though, she wants to show off local brands, which she pours on 40 to 60 percent of the bar’s 38 taps.
“It’s important for Puerto Ricans to know people here are contributing [to the beer scene] and doing it in a way that’s uniquely Puerto Rican,” Guillory says. Lúpulo, along with the island’s 13 craft breweries, is doing just that.

Kenya: East African Breweries Limited commercializes Africana barley variety
|
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has announced that they have commercialized the Aliciana barley variety a year after it was launched, Kahawa Tungu reported on December 12.
EABL made the announcement during the annual Field Day in Mau Narok following trials of the barley variety with farmers who have reported higher yields and greater resistance to water lodging.
The Field Day, an annual event that brings together stakeholders within the barley value chain, is an event where stakeholders converge to learn, share experiences and showcase their products and innovations. Barley is the main raw material for EABL’s beers.
EABL continues to invest in research in an effort to offer production solutions to barley growers through its subsidiary East African Malting (EAML).
EABL also launched the 8th edition of the Barley Growing Handbook as part of farmer capability building during the Field Day.
The Barley Growing Handbook summarizes the current recommendations on the barley varieties to be cultivated by farmers, seed rates, fertilizer usage, recommended insecticides, fungicides, herbicides to be used on barley and seed dressers. The recommendations in the Handbook are based on research data generated by the EAML research department and her partners.

India: Suntory to begin selling its first whisky blended in India
|
Japanese beverage maker Suntory said on December 16 it would begin selling its first whisky blended in India, as it pushes further into the world's largest market for the spirit, Reuters reported.
Suntory, which already sells whisky in India including from its subsidiary Beam Suntory, would begin selling a new product which uses imported whisky blended in India, a spokeswoman said.
