USA: View on more beer consumption cautious as drinkers turn to spirits and seltzer investment banker Cowen

Investment banker Cowen is keeping a cautious view on the prospects for more US beer consumption, particularly domestic beer, as drinkers turn to spirits and seltzer and as a new study indicates teenagers are rejecting alcohol and cigarettes, The Detroit News reported.
Data show that schoolchildren in eighth, tenth and twelfth grades are continuing to make trade-offs between vaping and cigarettes and between cannabis and alcohol, with teens increasingly shifting away from legacy consumption offerings, analysts led by Vivien Azer wrote in a note. Signals are mixed for companies, with Constellation Brands Inc. and Brown-Forman Corp. potentially gaining and Altria Group Inc. missing out.
Given the declines in youth incidence of alcohol, the shifts in underlying sub-category trends will ultimately be increasingly important, Azer said, noting that pockets of beer, including imports, continue to expand at healthy rates. Meanwhile, alcohol and cannabis use is converging, as are perceived risks and disapproval, she said. There are also declines in lifetime alcohol use, perhaps linked with an increasingly health conscious consumer, she said.

Belgium: AB InBev, Alken-Maes to increase beer prices from January 1
|
Beers brewed by AB InBev and Alken-Maes will be more expensive from January 1 in bars, restaurants and supermarkets, The Brussels Times reported on December 27.
The price of a barrel (50 litres) of Stella will increase by 6 euro and a barrel of Jupiler will go up by 2.70 euro.
Alken-Maes will also be increasing the price of its products from 1 January in shops, whereas the Horeca sector will not be concerned until February 1.
The brewer does not however provide any details concerning the amount of the increase.
Alcohol-free beers will be unaffected by the increase.

Japan & South Korea: Japans beer exports to South Korea drop 99.1% in November
|
Beer exports by Japan to South Korea in November stood at 6.96 million, down 99.1 percent from a year earlier, the Finance Ministry said on December 26.
The November exports remained very weak due to continued boycotts of Japanese products in South Korea, reflecting the soured bilateral relations.
In October, Japans beer exports to South Korea dropped to zero for the first time in about 20 years.
According to the latest detailed trade data, exports of hydrogen fluoride, one of the semiconductor materials that was subject to tighter export controls introduced by Japan against South Korea in July but eased in December, tumbled 93.5 percent to 46.93 million.
Other Japanese products hit hard by the boycotts include instant ramen noodles, with the value of exports standing at 910,000 for the month, or down 97.9 percent on the year, the ministry said.

UK: Pub sector reiterates urges to reduce beer duty
|
UK pub sector representatives have reiterated urges for the Government to reduce beer duty, The Morning Advertiser reported on December 24.
It comes after the Government outlined it would introduce a cut in business rates ahead of the Queens Speech last week.
While the move was welcomed by many in the sector others believe there also needs to be a lower rate of tax on beer to help struggling pubs.
British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Emma McClarkin welcomed the commitment to change the business rates system but said action on duty was needed.
She said: However, with seven out of 10 drinks sold in a pub being beer, it remains the case that a freeze or cut in beer tax at the next budget is the most direct way of helping pubs stay viable, so we hope that the commitment to a review of alcohol duties encompasses this.
During his election campaign Boris Johnson pledged a new Government led by him would look into alcohol duties.
McClarkin added: It would also show that the Prime Minister is listening to the 230,000 supporters of the Long Live the Local campaign, which calls on the next Government to cut beer tax to support local pubs

|
IFC is investing up to 50 million in Habesha Breweries S.C. to help the company expand operations in Ethiopia and increase local barley sourcing from smallholder farmers, World Grain reported on December 23.
The loan is co-funded by the Dutch development bank (FMO) and Dutch banks Coperatieve Rabobank U.A. (Rabobank) and ING Bank N.V. (ING Bank).
Programs that support local sourcing are critical to linking smallholder farmers to large supply chains, thus creating more economic opportunity and jobs for vital parts of the countrys agriculture sector, said Jumoke Jagun-Dokunmu, IFCs regional director for Eastern Africa.
According to IFC, Ethiopias brewing industry is fast growing and an important contributor to economic growth, but the sector imports as much as 90% of its malt barley needs.
Our partnership with IFC and other lenders is timely and key to growing the malt barley supply chain in Ethiopia, said Zewdu Negate, chief executive officer of Habesha Breweries. We aim to increase smallholder farmers from 1,000 to 14,000 in the next five years and improve household incomes. This investment has a purpose and feels like the right thing.
