Brewery news Japan: Korean boycott of Japanese goods costs Asahi Group US$27 mln last year
Japanese beer and beverage maker Asahi Group Holdings said a South Korean consumer boycott of Japanese goods cost it around 3 billion yen (US$27.32 million) last year, CNA reported on February 13.

"The impact is continuing in the current year," Atsushi Katsuki, a senior Asahi executive told reporters.

Tensions between the two countries escalated after a South Korean court in 2018 ordered Japanese companies to compensate Koreans who were forced to work for Japanese occupiers during World War II. Japan later retaliated by restricting exports of high-tech materials to South Korea.

Brewery news Malaysia: Customs cancels Carlsberg’s RM21 mln bill of demand
Lady luck seems to be smiling on Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd. The brewery announced on February 14 that Customs has cancelled its bill of demand claiming for sales tax and penalty totalling RM20.65 million, The Edge Markets reported.

The company told the stock exchange that it received a letter from the Selangor State Director of Royal Malaysian Customs on February 13.

The letter confirms that "the bill of demand for sales tax amounting to RM13.76 million and the penalty amounting to RM6.88 million for the period of July 1, 2011 to Jan 14, 2014 has been cancelled", said Carlsberg in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

The cancellation took effect on Jan 15, 2020, it added.

This is the second piece of good news in two consecutive days for Carlsberg’s shareholders. The company will be included in the MSCI Global Standard Index effective Feb 28, and this has lifted the stock to a record high.

On the bill of demand, to recap, in September 2014, Carlsberg said it was slapped with excise duty, sales tax and penalty claims amounting to RM56.4 million.

The state customs had then demanded excise duty amounting to RM35.7 million, sales tax amounting to RM13.76 million and a penalty amounting to RM6.88 million ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Court upholds ruling rejecting petition from Sapporo for return of claimed overpaid taxes
Tokyo High Court on February 12 upheld a lower court ruling rejecting a petition from Sapporo Breweries Ltd. for the return of 11.5 billion yen in what it claims to be overpaid liquor tax on a beer-like beverage product, Nippon.com reported.

In 2013, the Sapporo Holdings Ltd. unit launched Goku Zero as a so-called third-segment beer-like drink, subject to a lower liquor tax rate.

But tax authorities decided that Goku Zero could not be classified into the third-segment category. In 2014, Sapporo relaunched Goku Zero as a "happoshu" quasi-beer product with a higher tax rate.

The company voluntarily paid 11.5 billion yen in liquor tax for the product with the higher tax rate, but an in-house investigation found that it was a third-segment beverage.

After tax authorities turned down Sapporo's request for the return of the tax paid, the company filed a petition with Tokyo District Court in 2017, only to be rejected.

Brewery news Croatia & Bosnia: Croatia's Stanic Beverages to launch production in Bosnia
Croatia's Stanic Beverages, part of Stanic Group, plans to launch this year beer production in Bosnia where it currently distributes a large number of international beer brands, SeeNews reported on February 12 citing a Bosnian municipality.

Stanic Beverages will build a beer production plant in Kresevo, a town in central Bosnia located some 40 km west of Sarajevo, the Kresevo municipality said in a statement earlier this week.

The investment will be made in partnership with the local authorities who will provide the company with the necessary water resources for the planned beer production, the municipality said without disclosing the value of the investment.

At present, Stanic Beverages, via its Kresevo-based Bosnian unit Boreas, is the distributors of beer brands such as Heineken, Amstel, Karlovacko, Zajecarsko Pivo, MB and Pils Plus, among others, on the Bosnian market.

Boreas is also active in the distribution of strong alcoholic drinks, non-alcoholic drinks and tobacco products.

In 2015, Stanic Beverages opened a fruit juice bottling plant in Kresevo for its Juicy brand, aiming to meet the rising demand for its products in the region and beyond.

Stanic Group comprises eight companies operating in the fields of production, distribution and sale of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, technical goods and ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries to cut 500 jobs
South African Breweries - now under the AB InBev banner - is looking to cut 500 jobs, eNCA reported on February 12.

The company and the Food and Allied Workers Union met for the first time at the CCMA on February 12 as part of a Section 189 process.

This came a day after data from Statistics South Africa showed an increasing trend in job losses over the years.

This will be the second retrenchment process in as many months for the group after it is said to have retrenched 33 people last year.

The company says the retrenchments are necessary in light of current economic conditions and says it's in line with its merger conditions that the cuts will be limited to specific workers.

BarleyBarley News Barley

Barley news Australia: Western Australian barley growers likely to be hit hardest as a result of coronavirus
Western Australian barley growers will likely be the hardest hit in the country as a result of coronavirus, according to a report from the Australian Export Grain Innovation Centre (AEGIC).

The study, which was released on February 10, also found that the coronavirus will much more severely affect WA farmers than the SARS outbreak of the early 2000s.

AEGIC chief economist Ross Kingwell said infection rates to date suggest the coronavirus outbreak is a more serious health threat than the SARS epidemic.

"The global cost of the SARS was an estimated US$40 billion (A$59.7 bln), it infected 8098 people with 774 deaths in at least 17 countries," professor Kingwell said.

"As of February 10, 2020, 40,171 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 908 deaths were reported.

"Coronavirus is an economically much more serious set of potential outcomes for WA farmers."

Professor Kingwell said the threat to WA barley growers was potentially the severe as the State is the nation's major source of barley exported to China - and which is by far the main grain exported from Australia to China.

"When we combine what's happening in China with the ongoing effect of the African swine fever epidemic, it's causing a marked reduction in feed demand in China," ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo seeks legal view on objections to using United Breweries shares
Diageo has sought legal recourse against the Enforcement Directorate objections on using United Breweries (UBL) shares, which the spirits major claims were provided as security for certain loan liabilities of Watson and are part of the security package to which Diageo Holdings Netherlands BV (DHN) is entitled, the Economic Times reported on February 11.

On the other hand, top officials at the federal probe agency said it does not recognise the claim since Diageo has created an artificial pledge to use the UB shares. ED officials said that when Diageo was aware that Mallya owed funds to the company, it should not have stood as a guarantor for his loans and paid them off.

“We believe it is an artificial pledge created by Diageo. Our priority is to ensure that dues owed are rightfully given to the government,” an ED official said. Diageo declined to comment.

Legal experts close to Diageo said that the PMLA/ FEOA case includes claims to UBL shares. “The special court order to the consortium of banks covers only movable assets of Vijay Mallya and does not cover the UBL shares. Diageo is impleading because of the risk of the PMLA/FEOA piece affecting its security. It is just ...More info on site
