Brewery news USA: Year-to-date beer category dollar sales are up 6% in off-premise
Driven by the continued growth of hard seltzer, year-to-date beer category dollar sales are up 6% at off-premise retailers to start the year, according to market research firm IRI.

The Chicago-based firm — which tracks scans at major retail chains, grocery outlets and convenience stores — said dollar sales of flavored malt beverages (FMBs), non-alcoholic beers, and domestic super premium offerings drove most of the growth during the year-to-date period ending January 26, 2020.

FMBs, including hard seltzers, led the way, growing nearly 60% during the first four weeks of the year. Dollar sales of non-alcoholic offerings trailed closely behind, growing 44.7% on the strength of consumer interest in Dry January. Meanwhile, dollar sales of domestic super premium beers (like Michelob Ultra) grew 11.2%.

Sales of craft beer got off to a rather sluggish start in January, with dollar sales growing just 1.1%. Nevertheless, craft brewers were able to find pockets of growth within the category, including IPAs (+9.2%), golden ales (+8.2%), pale lagers (+14.1%) and pilsners (+11.9%).

Among the top-30 individual craft brands, New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger Liquid Paradise IPA and Sierra Nevada’s Hazy Little Thing IPA experienced the best growth.

Hazy Little Thing, which was introduced at the beginning of 2018, is now ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands completes sale of Ballast Point to Kings & Convicts Brewing Co.
Constellation Brands, Inc., a leading beverage alcohol company, announced on March 2 that it has completed the sale of Ballast Point to Kings & Convicts Brewing Co.

The transaction includes the Ballast Point brand and a number of its associated production facilities and brewpubs, excluding Constellation’s operations facility in Daleville, Virginia.

The sale of Ballast Point aligns with Constellation’s consumer-led premiumization strategy, which focuses on winning in growing sectors of the high-end of the U.S. beer market with strong brands that drive high growth and high margin performance. This strategy has helped fuel the company’s performance as one of the strongest growth drivers in the U.S. beer market.

The brewery is located at 507 River Bend Drive, Georgetown.

Brewery news USA, TX: Brew Monkey Beer Co. to begin construction soon
The construction process at San Antonio’s newest brewery is set to begin soon, and if the timing falls in line, a lineup of fresh beers from the Brew Monkey Beer Co. might be pouring as early as this summer, mysanantonio.com reported on February 28.

Brew Monkey, which is owned by Jim Hansen, a veteran California-based brewer, is located on the Northeast Side at 11935 Starcrest Drive inside the Blossom Business Park. He plans to start construction soon on his 2,000-square-foot facility, which is currently a mostly empty shell, and to start brewing his beers in May before hopefully opening in June.

Hansen is going big with a 15-barrel system that he believes will allow him to quickly transition from a traditional tasting room into a full-production facility that will distribute kegs of beer to area bars and restaurants.

“We’re going to be coming at it hard from the start,” said Hansen, who has been trying to make Brew Monkey a reality for more than two years. He likely will launch using just about 40 percent of what the system can handle, but he wanted to open with a system he could easily ramp up should the beers succeed quickly.

Hansen said his beers will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Rusty Bus Brewing Co. looking for a Lewiston-Auburn home
Rusty Bus Brewing Co. is on the move, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported on February 29.

Early plans to set up in Continental Mill space fell through, according to a company Facebook post: “Although it was a great old building, and we had a lot of romantic notions on how it would turn out, in reality, it would cost a small fortune to get to the point that we needed.”

Co-founder Peter Ouellette, who is opening the brewery with his wife, Nichole, said that he’s been looking for between 2,500 and 3,000 square feet, enough for a microbrewery and taproom.

Proper drainage and build-out costs have so far been among the biggest hurdles in the search.

“We would like to be open this year,” he said. “I grew up in the Lewiston and (brewer Nathan Chisholm) grew up in Auburn, and we really want to contribute in the revitalization of this area, so staying local is very important to us. If finding a suitable location means locating in a suburb, then we will.”

The company has a one-barrel brewhouse and 10 one-barrel fermenters to brew about 300 gallons at a time. It plans to brew an array of beer styles along with carrying ciders and ...More info on site

The brewery said it has assets in the same range. Chapter 7 bankruptcies are typically a liquidation process, where a trustee is appointed to oversee a selloff of the debtor’s assets.

The 3,000-square-foot brewery was founded by Jean Verrier, who is listed as president on the bankruptcy filing, along with his wife and brother-in-law. The co-owners initially invested $650,000 into the space, plus $100,000 in tenant improvements from Kimco Realty, according to previous BusinessDen reporting.

Verrier didn’t respond to requests for comment on March 2. The brewery’s website and Facebook page were taken down as of the morning of March 2.

Jonathan Dickey with Buechler Law Office in Denver is representing the company in bankruptcy proceedings. He could not be reached for comment on March 2.

The maker of Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff purchased 50.75 lakh shares at Rs 693.25 per share on the National Stock Exchange.
