Brewery news Mexico: Federal government assures population Constellation Brands’ planned brewery is no threat to water supply
The operation of the brewery under construction by the United States company Constellation Brands in Mexicali, Baja California, does not pose a threat to the water supply, the federal government says in an information leaflet being distributed in the lead-up to this weekend’s referendum on the controversial beverage plant, the Mexico News Daily reported on March 16.

Emblazoned with the logos of the ministries of the Interior and the Environment as well as the National Water Commission, the brochure acknowledges that there is community concern that the brewery will use excessive amounts of water and thus create a shortage in Mexicali and surrounding areas.

However, the government points out that there is annual water availability of 2.7 billion cubic meters in the Valley of Mexicali and that the state government has only authorized the use of 5.8 million cubic meters per year by the brewery.

The amount represents “just 0.2% of the total volume [of available water] in the region,” the leaflet says, adding that the brewery will not be permitted to increase the quantity of water it uses.

“The operation of the plant doesn’t represent a present or future risk to the supply or availability of water for the countryside and homes in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Bronx Brewery to expand to second location this fall
With its ninth birthday on the horizon and its Taproom & Backyard in the South Bronx coming off a record-setting year, The Bronx Brewery is heading downtown. And bringing friends, Brewbound reported on March 16.

The brewery announced that it will expand to a second location this fall, launching a pilot brewery, taproom, kitchen and music venue in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village. Located at 64 Second Ave (between 3rd & 4th St.), The Bronx Brewery East Village will combine limited-release brewing, the brewery’s signature events, art & music from rising stars across NYC, and a special guest in the kitchen.

The space will bring the brewery’s goal of building community through a diverse, creative and inclusive environment to an iconic neighborhood long known for its creative energy.

“Our goal has always been to create amazing beer – but it’s never been just about the beer itself,” said The Bronx Brewery president and co-founder Damian Brown. “We believe great beer can bring people from all walks of life together, and it’s a privilege to see that happen every day in the South Bronx. We’re excited to share so much of what makes our culture special with a new part of the city.”

Brewery news USA, PA: Juniata Brewing Company opens its doors in Huntingdon County
Juniata Brewing Company held its grand opening on Saturday, March 14 in Huntingdon County, WJAC Johnstown reported.

The brewery is located at the intersection of 11th Street and Susquehanna Avenue in Huntingdon borough and is the only brewery in Huntingdon County.

The business is owned by Sean Steeg and David Welsh.

Both men say they were up to the challenge of being small business owners and beer producers.

They say that craft beer enthusiasts will often travel to visit different breweries and try different beers and they hope that their new brewery will be another tourist destination in the county.

"I expect at some point we'll start to see some more breweries in this area nd we can actually turn that into a little trail of sorts. It could be a real economic boom for the area because it's bringing outside money in,” said Steeg

They are offering four beers to start, but say they plan on offering more flavors in the coming days and weeks.

Brewery news USA, SC: Sumter Original Brewery to establish operations in Sumter County
Sumter Original Brewery, a local craft brewery, will invest $6.5 million to establish operations in Sumter County, SC. The project will create 20 new jobs, the Business Facilities Magazine reported on March 16.

“We are excited to bring Sumter’s first brewery to downtown Sumter and continue the revitalization efforts of this historic area,” said Sumter Original Brewery Owner and Operator Gray Shuler. “We want to create a convergence of world-class beer, along with the great food and atmosphere of downtown for the people of Sumter and surrounding areas. Thank you to everyone that has supported and contributed to this project over the past twelve years.”

The first-of-its-kind in the county, Sumter Original Brewery will brew beers using the centuries-old Germanic tradition of step mashing – coaxing out subtle nuances by enzymatic activity.

Located at 2 South Main Street in Sumter, Sumter Original Brewery’s 30,000-square-foot facility will have a 15-barrel brewing system that will brew a diverse selection on craft beers including an IPA, stout, sour, pale ale, light beer and more.

“All around South Carolina, businesses of all types are thriving, and today’s announcement by Sumter Original Brewery is a testament to that,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “We congratulate this company and look forward ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Pelican Brewing Company breaking ground on new location in Lincoln City
Staying true to its beach roots, Pelican Brewing Company adds to its flock, breaking ground this month on its newest location on Siletz Bay in Lincoln City, Oregon, TheFullPint.com reported.

Pelican is planning another unique brewpub experience, at the former site of The Bay House restaurant—to showcase the magnificence of this beautiful stretch of the Oregon Coast. The new brewpub is expected to open early in 2021. While actual groundbreaking will take place on the site this spring, a community celebration will be planned for a future date.

Twenty-four years after opening its first venue—and Oregon’s only oceanfront brewpub—in Pacific City, Pelican brings its iconic beach culture to another Oregon coast town. Like its other locations in Pacific City, Cannon Beach and Tillamook, the Siletz Bay brewpub will offer craft beers unique to that location—and a modern yet casual and relaxing guest experience punctuated by the raw natural beauty and wildlife of the bay. The new brewpub will deliver the same incomparable pub fare featuring locally-sourced seafood and produce, and a number of innovative features found only at Pelican Brewing—Siletz Bay.

“We are honored to bring the Pelican experience, our award-winning beer and innovative beer cuisine to another Central Coast market—and we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Broken Bat Brewing moving to a larger facility in Milwaukee
After nearly three years at 231 E. Buffalo St., the baseball-themed Broken Bat Brewing will pack up its pint glasses and memorabilia to move a couple blocks away to a larger facility at 135 E. Pittsburgh Ave., Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on March 13.

The last night is March 21.

Wizard Works Brewing, which is owned by Chris Ragaisis and Jennifer Higgins, is expected to move into the cozy lower-level space. Wizard Works will host a weekly magic show and serve classic-style beers — beer-flavored beers, Ragaisis said.

The switch is less sleight of hand and more a well-planned changing of the guard.

Broken Bat expects to open to the public in its new space on April 3. Wizard Works hopes to open in Broken Bat's old space around the same time.

The new Broken Bat defines the word expansion. Next to the 20-barrel brewhouse is a Wiffle ball field that the owners hope will attract leagues three to four nights a week. The 4,500-square-foot taproom features a live-edge wooden bar top with seating for 140 and capacity for 215. The Buffalo Street spot has occupancy for 49 people.

Tim Pauly and Dan McElwee opened the first Broken Bat on April ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Beaches Brewing closes brewpub in Toronto
Beaches Brewing has announced that after six months in operation, its brewpub location in Toronto’s east end has closed down, the Canadian Beer News reported on March 16.

This closure was explained in a post on Instagram over the weekend:

With the extremely high price of rent in the neighbourhood, the slow traffic through January and February, and not being able to jump through provincial loopholes quick enough to begin retail sales and production, we have not been able to build up the coffers required to survive the low season. Sadly, while we thought we had successfully been negotiating with our landlords so that we could pay our hard working staff and make it to the busier summer months, the negotiations failed. Although we would like to be a part of the Easter Parade, Jazzfest and the rest of the summer, the impact of COVID-19 leaves serious doubt in the sustainability of continuing the hospitality portion of Beaches Brewing.

The announcement also notes that production of Beaches beer for distribution via LCBO, Beer Store, and licensees will continue.

Brewery news World: AB InBev draws down the entirety of $9 bln loan facility from global banks
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer by volume, has become the latest big company to bolster its cash position by drawing down the entirety of a $9 bln loan facility from global banks, the Financial Times reported on March 16 people with direct knowledge of the decision.

The brewer, which has been working to reduce a $95 bln debt burden built up during a years-long acquisition binge, made a request to tap the facility late last week, these people said.

In doing so, AB InBev joined a growing list of companies — including Boeing, Hilton Worldwide and IAG, the parent company of British Airways — rushing to secure cash from credit facilities.

The cash will help preserve AB InBev’s financial flexibility as the brewer deals with the fallout from the coronavirus, which economists warn is weighing heavily on consumption across the globe. Restaurants, bars and pubs have been closed in several countries and sales of beer and spirits have dropped.

AB InBev’s shares have lost more than half their value since the start of the year, plunging from €74.49 on January 2 to €34.88 by late on March 16. Its equity value has slumped to €58.96 bln.

The company said in ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Keroche Industries secures temporary orders stopping the taxman from recovering Sh9.1 billion in taxes from its accounts
On Friday, March 13, troubled Keroche Industries secured temporary orders stopping the taxman from recovering Sh9.1 billion in taxes from its accounts, the Daily Nation reported.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had gone for Keroche’s jugular by freezing the brewer’s Equity Bank accounts until the Sh9.1 billion tax demand is paid in full.

KRA’s move followed a Tax Appeals Tribunal ruling on March 12 that dismissed Keroche’s applications challenging the levying of excise duty on an alcoholic drink produced at the brewer’s Naivasha factory.

Justice David Majanja’s orders have given Keroche temporary reprieve as it figures out its next move.

The tribunal delivered its ruling on March 11 and told both Keroche and KRA that the judgment would be available on the same day.

Keroche now says that when it tried to get a copy of the judgment the following day, its lawyers — Hamilton, Harrison and Mathews — were told that the tribunal had taken a two-day break for a staff retreat.

While the latest claim by KRA is for Sh9.1 billion, Keroche claims that the taxman has in the past few months made several demands for a cumulative Sh23 billion.

What started out as a Sh1.1 billion tax demand on November 29, 2006 has now grown ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Pubs and restaurants need urgent state help to get through coronavirus pandemic
UK’s hospitality industry could effectively be condemned to death without urgent state help to get through the coronavirus pandemic, metro.co.uk reported on March 17.

Pubs and restaurant owners are calling for immediate action to support the industry financially after Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised people not to go out but stopped short of ordering entertainment venues to close. The British Beer and Pub Association has written to Mr Johnson, demanding urgent steps are taken to prevent mass job losses and permanent pub closures.

The letter, seen by the PA news agency and dated March 16, follows the Government issuing new advice for people to avoid pubs, clubs and theatres in a bid to halt the spread of coronavirus. British Beer and Pub Association chief executive Emma McClarkin said: ‘The UK pub and brewing industry is tonight facing an existential crisis as a direct result of the guidance issued by the Government today. Thousands of pubs and hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost in the very short term unless a proactive package creating cash and liquidity is provided immediately to the industry. Forced pub closures without a meaningful support package will have a catastrophic financial and social impact.’

Brewery news Ireland: Guinness announces €1.5 million fund to help support bar staff and the elderly
Guinness has announced it will set up a €1.5 million fund to help support bar staff and the elderly in light of the coronavirus public health crisis, The Irish Times reported on March 17.

Some €1.2 million of the funding will be provided to bar staff unable to work following the Government recommendation all pubs across the country close to help prevent the spread of the virus, officially known as Covid-19.

The remaining €300,000 will be used to support elderly people during the unprecedented health crisis, through a partnership with Alone, a charity for the elderly.

The charity welcomed the funding, which will be used to maintain and expand the support services it offers to elderly communities.

The closures led to concerns that thousands of jobs could be at risk and many premises would not be able to open again following the financial impact of the emergency measures to tackle coronavirus.

Oliver Loomes, country director of Guinness owners Diageo Ireland, said the company would work with the Licensed Vintners’ Association and Vintners’ Federation of Ireland around how to “support bar staff to maximum effect using this funding”.

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev to use on of its breweries to produce sanitizer
With alcohol gel supplies increasingly stretched, Ambev SA said on March 17 it will use one of its Brazil beer breweries to produce half a million sanitizer bottles for public hospitals to fight the spread of coronavirus, Reuters reported.

Ambev SA, the local subsidiary of Anheuser Busch InBev, said in a statement that it plans to deliver 5,000 sanitizer gel bottles to every public hospital in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, where most of the country’s coronavirus cases are concentrated.

“Demand for alcohol-based sanitizer gel has continued to increase in recent days and there is already a shortage on the market,” Ambev, Latin America’s biggest brewer, said in a statement on March 17.

The move is part of global trend of private sector firms stepping up to help in the battle against COVID-19, which has decimated markets and pushed governments to take extreme measures to try and control the outbreak.

Louis Vuitton owner LVMH said on March 15 that its cosmetics unit would manufacture large quantities of hand disinfectant gel to help stave off a nationwide shortage across France as the coronavirus rapidly spreads.

Ambev said the 500,000 units will be packaged in bottles like the ones used for soft drinks, and the ...More info on site
