Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands expect beer sales growth to be 7-8% in fiscal year 2021
Constellation Brands Inc. said that it expects beer sales growth for fiscal year 2021 to be 7%-8% including the impact of the Ballast Point divestiture and annual organic net sales growth of 8%-10%, Nasdaq reported on April 3.

In Wine and Spirits segment, the company expects net sales and operating income for fiscal year 2021 to be down about 30% to 35%, respectively.

Fiscal 2021 earnings per share guidance is unavailable at this time due to potential impacts on the business from COVID-19. However, the company sets forth management's pre-COVID-19 business expectations for fiscal 2021 compared to fiscal 2020 actual results.

Brewery news Mexico: Constellation Brand’s Mexican breweries still operational
Constellation Brands Inc , the U.S. distributor of Corona beer, said on April 3 its Mexican breweries were still operational and supply to the United States was intact even as rivals suspended production due to the coronavirus pandemic, KDAL News reported.

AB InBev-owned Grupo Modelo and Dutch brewer Heineken recently suspended their Mexican operations after the country declared a health emergency and ordered the suspension of non-essential activities.

Constellation Chief Executive Officer Bill Newlands said the company was not going against government recommendations.

"I have no comment regarding a competitor and what they are choosing to do or not choosing to do... What I would say is, today... we are operating," Newlands said on a conference call with analysts.

The brewer's Corona and Modelo beers have been a huge hit with consumers, especially among the Hispanic population, helping it gain market share in the United States.

Constellation bought U.S. distribution rights for Corona beer from AB InBev's Grupo Modelo in 2013.

The company operates two breweries at Nava and Obregon in Mexico, where it produces about 34 million hectoliters of beer, according to a 2019 filing.

Newlands said staff were being screened for temperatures at the company's facilities and have been maintaining social distancing protocols.

Brewery news USA: Craft brewing industry on the verge of collapse due to COVID-19
The craft brewing industry is on the verge of collapse, a new survey reveals.

Most breweries that responded to the survey by the Brewers Association trade group say they don't think their business can last three months under current coronavirus-induced operating conditions.

If such conditions continue, thousands of the approximately 8,100 U.S. breweries may close, the association says.

Most of the 455 breweries that responded to the survey say sales have dropped more than 70%. Most breweries and bars are closed to customers, so breweries' "sharpest declines" have been in draught beer sales.

Some breweries have been able to ramp up business with takeout, drive-up and delivery sales to a level that exceeds their former on-site sales.

However, "this should not be viewed as feasible for all brewers, nor should it be seen as a total replacement for draught sales," the trade association says. "One hundred percent growth in taproom sales via drive-up only helps when your taproom was 5% of sales and distributed draught was 75% of sales."

A responsible business owner does scenario planning, the association says, "but few, if any, build plans for a near complete drop in revenue with no insurance protection and continued bills to pay."

Many survey respondents say that, under ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: First slowdown of alcohol stocking up begins to show during week to March 28 - Nielsen
After consecutive weeks of consumers stocking up on alcoholic beverages at off-premise retailers in mid-March due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the first signs of a slowdown began to show during the week ending March 28, according to market research firm Nielsen.

Nevertheless, sales outpaced a typical final week in March, increasing 22% compared to the same one-week period in 2019, and outpacing the growth of total consumer goods, which were up 16%, the firm reported.

Beer, FMB and cider dollar sales increased 17% for the week ending March 28, with all segments growing and several still up double digits, Nielsen reported. Meanwhile, dollar sales of wine and spirits each increased 27% for the week.

Beer, excluding FMBs and cider, increased dollar sales 10%, with super premiums up 18%, craft up 15%, premium lights up 7.5%, budget up 7.3% and imports up 8.7%.

Hard seltzers continued to be the beer category’s growth driver, increasing sales 327% and gaining 2.5 share points during the week, outpacing pre-COVID-19 growth rates, Nielsen reported.

FMBs, excluding hard seltzers, increased 18%, while cider increased dollar sales 15% compared to the same week in 2019, according to Nielsen.

Consumers continued to gravitate toward larger pack sizes (24-packs and up) compared to smaller packs, ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Mexicans panic-buying beer amid brewing plants temporary shutdown
Shoppers in Mexico are panic-buying beer as brewing plants across the country have temporarily shut down in response to the government's order that all nonessential industries and businesses close in April in an effort to contain the coronavirus, Fox News reported on April 7.

Groupo Modelo, the maker of several popular beer brands, including Pacifica, Corona and Modelo, suspended production after authorities deemed its breweries nonessential. Dutch-brewer Heineken also halted its operations in Mexico.

Videos of shoppers stocking up on beer went viral on social media. NPR reported some are using the hashtag #ConLasChelasNo, which translates to #Don'tMessWithMyBeer.

Authorities in several Mexican states have either banned alcohol sales or are limiting purchases of alcohol, NPR reported. In the state of Nuevo Leon, Gov. Jaime Rodríguez Calderón recommended banning alcohol sales, saying consumption could lead to an uptick in domestic violence as families stuck together at home.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Erie Creek Brewing opens its doors in Salmo
A new brewery in British Columbia’s Kootenay Region opened this past weekend to offer growler sales to its local community, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 6.

Erie Creek Brewing has been founded by brewer Colin Hango, and is located in the village of Salmo, approximately 40 km south of Nelson in the Salmo River Valley.

While the launch of its taproom and live music lounge has been delayed due to COVID-19, the brewery is open for take-away sales for now, with six beers available including Out Cold Cream Ale (5.1% abv), Monashee Springs APA (5.4% abv), Lost Mountain Brown Ale (5.5% abv), Red Eye Redemption Rye IPA (5.9% abv), Erie Mist American IPA (5.2% abv), and Mine Wheat Beer (5.2% abv).

Brewery news USA, TX: Texas craft breweries 71% revenue decline due to COVID-19
The public health and economic crisis brought on by COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on Texas’ small and independent craft breweries and the thousands of Texans they employ, the Craft Brewing Business reported on April 7.

In a survey of brewery members last week, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild found that the average revenue decline these small businesses are experiencing due to the crisis is 71 percent and 63 percent of responding breweries have been forced to lay off or furlough staff as a result.

To help Texas small breweries and their workers weather this economic crisis, and allow Texans to continue getting local beer while limiting person-to-person contact, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild has launched a petition requesting that Governor Greg Abbott exercise his emergency powers to grant several relief measures that could make a difference in many businesses’ survival. These measures, now supported by over 16,000 petition signees, include the temporary suspension of excise tax collection, an excise tax credit for any surplus beer that is disposed of as a result of COVID-19 impacts and the ability for breweries to temporarily deliver and ship their beer directly to consumers.

Key survey takeaways from responding breweries:

• 71% is the average revenue ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Washington breweries struggle to survive during coronavirus crisis
All across the Evergreen State, taprooms have gone silent. Keg washers stand idle. Planned beer releases have been postponed or canceled. Brewers delay purchases of new tanks and equipment. And employees are sent home to wait for an unemployment check and the eventual return of something resembling business as usual, newschoolbeer.com reported on April 6.

Even before Washington governor Jay Inslee issued his first emergency proclamation about COVID-19 on February 29, the novel coronavirus had already spread far and wide. As of this week, the Centers for Disease Control has confirmed cases in 173 countries. The pandemic has challenged governments and businesses of all sizes, and isn’t finished claiming lives or beating up the global economy. No industry has been spared from the recession brought on by this infectious disease, but necessary social distancing measures and stay-at-home orders have hit tourism and hospitality particularly hard. In other words, for the more than 400 breweries across the state, from Aberdeen to Walla Walla and from Bellingham to Vancouver, the going has gotten very tough.

Making every effort to adapt and persevere, Washington breweries have invested in 32-ounce Crowlers, pleaded for help from local and federal government, and pivoted to mail order ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Federal government cancels operating permits of Heineken and Carlsberg
Malaysia’s federal government has cancelled the operating permit of Heineken Malaysia Berhad and Carlsberg Malaysia's factories during the ongoing movement control order (MCO) following public backlash, the Malay Mail reported on April 6.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob confirmed the news during his daily briefings on Covid-19 at Putrajaya on April 6.

“The whole of yesterday, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp groups and many more were questioning why the Heineken and Carlsberg factories were still allowed to be open.

“Today after a special Cabinet meeting headed by the prime minister, we decided to revoke their permits,” said Ismail.

“Miti (Ministry of International Trade and Industry) will release a letter of termination immediately and so there should be no more issues regarding why these factories are still open.”

Heineken Malaysia had obtained approval from the government to resume limited operations with a minimal number of essential workers during the MCO.

Heineken on March 24 said it had suspended the operations of its brewery in Petaling Jaya in line with the MCO and that its employees were working from home until March 31.

In a statement, Heineken said it will ensure full compliance with the government’s requirements and guidelines during the MCO period.

Whisky news UK: Inver House Distillers and the North British Distillery set to reopen
Whisky bottling plants operated by the Edrington group, Inver House Distillers and the North British Distillery, are to reopen after production was halted due to coronavirus, The Drinks Business reported on April 6.

According to a statement from union GMB Scotland given to the BBC, bottling plants owned by Edrington, Inver House and North British have approached staff to return to work.

Other companies, for example Diageo and William Grant & Sons, have kept their facilities open during the health crisis, but have scaled back their production.

Last week, Diageo defended its decision to continue production after the Unite union called for it to cease operations during the health crisis. Diageo, which is believed to still be operating its plants in Leven, Cameron Bridge and Sheildhall, said it had met with union representatives several times, asking them to flag up any issues so that they could be immediately rectified.

A spokesperson from Diageo told db that it had “stringent safety protocols in place across all sites” and that it had “fundamentally changed” the way it operates in order to comply with regulations.

The spokesperson added that the company was complying with the latest government guidelines and that it would never ask any employee to work ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Kirin Brewery to launch no-alcohol beer Kirin Greens Free nationwide
Japan’s Kirin Brewery will launch its latest no-alcohol beer, Kirin Greens Free, nationwide this month, the latest in a long line of booze-free innovations in the country, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on April 7. It is a non-alcoholic beverage (0.00% ABV) and made from only three ingredients, wheat, hop and water.

Ataka Takashima from the corporate communication department at Kirin Holdings told FoodNavigator-Asia that Kirin Greens Free is marketed as a ‘natural beer-tasting carbonated beverage’.

The company said the beer is the first in Japan which did not use additives such as flavours and artificial sweeteners to create a taste similar to beer.

According to Kirin, increasing health awareness of consumers have driven the growth of non-alcoholic beverages and beer-tasting beverages in Japan.

Takashima told us non-alcoholic beers constitute about 5% of all liquor in Japanese market. Liquor includes wine, sake, spirits, as well as beer.

While it may not seem much, “It (non-alcoholic beer market) has grown 3% CAGR over the last three years, and we expect the trend to continue,” she added.

The company said the conventional perception of non-alcoholic beer used to only be that of a substitute for beer. However, Takashima said the non-alcoholic beers are suitable ...More info on site

Brewery news Pakistan: Pakistan’s only brewery to manufacture hand sanitizers
Murree Brewery Co., Pakistan’s only maker of alcoholic beverages, plans to manufacture hand sanitizers after a surge in demand led to fake and ineffective hand washes propping up at stores, Bloomberg reported on April 3.

The company has been given permission to make 10,000 gallons of sanitizers a month, Chief Executive Officer Isphanyar Bhandara said by phone. The Punjab excise department did not respond to a request for comment.

The coronavirus outbreak earlier this year resulted in a run on sanitizers and lured manufacturers to sell products without the necessary alcohol content needed to kill viruses. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government ordered 23 brands that did not meet World Health Organization standards to be removed from stores. The virus has infected about 2,000 people and killed 34 in the South Asian nation.

Pakistan has been locked down as the government tried to stop the disease from spreading. The Rawalpindi-based Murree has also urged the government to reopen liquor stores to stop the rising sales of toxic illegal liquor that has killed people.

Khan’s government announced a stimulus package of more than 400 billion rupees ($2.5 billion) while the central bank announced an interest-rate cut in an unscheduled meeting to support the slowing economy. Moody’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Jupiler offering ten free beers to people to postpone their birthday celebrations
Jupiler is offering ten free beers to people who “postpone” their birthday, as they cannot celebrate properly until after the lockdown imposed because of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), The Brussels Times reported on April 3.

People with birthdays between 1 March and 30 April can “reschedule” their celebrations until after the confinement measures, on a dedicated website. The Belgian beer brand then offers 10 glasses of Jupiler or Jupiler 0.0%, to drink in a café from the list on the website. “That way, you can still toast, hug and celebrate with your friends,” the company said.

With this initiative, AB InBev, the American-Belgian multinational drink and brewing holdings company that owns Jupiler, wants to support the hospitality and catering sector.

The promotion is only valid for people over 18, and they have to show a picture of their ID-card when signing up.
