WHERE XANTHOHUMOL IS ALSO PROMISING

ABSTRACT
Infections with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) have a severe impact on the world swine industry. However, commercially available vaccines provide only incomplete protection against this disease. Thus, novel approaches to control PRRSV infection are essential for a robust and sustainable swine industry. In this study, xanthohumol (Xn), a prenylated flavonoid extracted from hops (Humulus lupulus L), was screened amongst 386 natural products to inhibit PRRSV proliferation and alleviate oxidative stress induced by PRRSV. A group of Chinese researchers found that Xn could inhibit different PRRSV sub-genotype strain infections. In addition, it caused decreased expression of interleukin and tumor necrosis factor, both relevant for communication of infected cells. Animal challenge experiments showed that Xn effectively alleviated clinical signs, lung pathology, and inflammatory responses in lung tissues of pigs induced by highly pathogenic PRRSV infection. The results demonstrate that Xn is a promising therapeutic agent to combat PRRSV infections.

Barley news Canada: Farmers planning to plant less barley, more wheat this year
Farmers across Canada are busy getting their crops planted and have told Statistics Canada what to expect, the Lethbridge News Now reported on May 7.

While they are planning to plant more wheat, oats, and corn for grain this year, seeding intentions for canola, soybeans, barley, dry peas, and lentils are expected to be down.

This information was collected from 11,500 farmers between March 2-30. It is only a preliminary estimate as COVID-19 restrictions lead to less data being available.

Nationally, farmers anticipate planting 7.2 million acres of barley in 2020, down 2.1 per cent, likely due to high barley stocks. Saskatchewan is expected to lead the decrease in barley area with a drop of 147,700 acres, Statistics Canada said.

As for wheat, Canada’s farmers expect to plant nationally 3.3 per cent more acres, or 25.4 million acres compared to 2019. They look to plant the same amount of spring wheat (18.8 million acres), but anticipate higher durum (up 6.8 per cent to 5.2 million acres) and winter wheat (up 53.5 per cent to 1.4 million acres).

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors to sell Irwindale, California brewery to Pabst Brewing
Molson Coors Beverage Company’s Irwindale, California, brewery will have a new owner by year’s end as Pabst Brewing Company has exercised its option to purchase the facility, according to a Form 8-K Molson Coors filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on May 4 and posted to the company’s website on May 5, Brewbound reported.

“We have given notice to Molson Coors of our intention to purchase the Irwindale Brewery property,” Pabst CEO and chairman Eugene Kashper said. “We continue to evaluate this opportunity and are committed to choosing a path forward that is in the best interest of all our stakeholders.”

In January, Molson Coors announced plans to cease production at the 40-year-old brewery, effective September 2020. As part of an agreement, Pabst had 120 days to choose to buy the facility for $150 million.

This arrangement followed a lawsuit between the two brewers, two of the country’s largest, which Pabst filed over a nearly two-decades-old contract brewing agreement. iPabst and Molson Coors reached a settlement in the case in November 2018.

During the trial for that lawsuit, Kashper testified that Pabst offered to purchase Molson Coors’ now-shuttered Eden, North Carolina, facility for $100 million, to which Molson Coors made a counteroffer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance sees Q1 sales decline by nearly $4 mln
Craft Brew Alliance posted $45.8 million in sales during the first quarter of 2020, down nearly $4 million from the same time last year, according to the Form 10-Q the company submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commision and posted to its website on May 6, Brewbound reported.

“I am proud that even against this unprecedented backdrop, complete with all of its challenges, our decisiveness in quickly adapting allowed us to manage our financials while still looking out for the well-being of our employees and stakeholders,” CEO Andy Thomas said in a press release. “We are mindful that thus far, we have been able to weather the initial impacts remarkably well compared to others in our space.”

This quarter, CBA opted not to host an earnings call for investors and analysts and has stopped issuing forward-looking statements in advance of its impending merger with Anheuser-Busch InBev. CBA investors voted unanimously in favor of the merger in February. It is expected to close this year.

Nearly all CBA brands’ volumes declined during the quarter. The company’s total shipments (sales-to-wholesalers) declined 6.1% and total depletions (sales-to-retailers) declined 6%. The company shipped 154,400 barrels in Q1, 10,000 fewer barrels than the same time last year.

Brewery news USA, TX: Hound Song Brewing Co to become Colorado County’s first brewery
The iconic Harbert’s Garage, located at 535 Walnut St. in historic downtown Columbus, will provide a home for Colorado County’s first brewery and taproom. Hound Song Brewing Co, founded in late 2019 by county residents Travis, Raven, Dean, and Missy Kocurek, is beginning to take shape inside the historical building, the Colorado County Citizen reported on May 6.

The brewery will focus on producing a core lineup of low to moderate alcohol beers, traditionally brewed throughout Germany, The Czech Republic, and the United States. Aside from the core offerings, the brewery will tap seasonal and rotating small batch beers that align with the company’s mission to create balanced and flavorful beers to be enjoyed in a relaxing taproom environment together with family and friends.

Ronny Daley, owner of Harbert’s Garage, has worked for several years to restore the building and in January 2019 was awarded the Laura Ann Rau Preservation Award for his work to bring the historical building back to life. “Harbert’s Garage is an important part of Columbus’ history, and restoring this building has been an important goal for me. I am grateful for the work the City and local government has done to help make this a reality,” ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Constellation Brands continues to brew in Mexico but beer is exported to the US
Although beer production in Mexico is supposed to have been shut down, creating a beer shortage and driving beer prices through the roof, one company is continuing to brew brands such as Corona and Modelo, the Mexico News Daily reported on May 5.

But the beer brewed by Constellation Brands is not ending up in the hands of thirsty Mexicans. All of its production is destined for the United States.

After the government shuttered breweries in early April, deeming beer production a nonessential activity, supplies in the country are running low and at least 25 states report shortages.

Last week, convenience store chain Oxxo said it only had enough beer in stock to last 10 days, and in Monterrey and Tijuana stores are posting signs to their windows saying they have no beer. Black market beer prices in Mexico often come with a 300% markup.

But Constellation’s two plants in Mexico have been up and running throughout the pandemic, but have limited production and cut back staff, spokesman Michael McGrew said, adding that after consulting with government officials he is convinced the company is in compliance with the law.

But there may be good news on the horizon for Mexican beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Hardware Brewing Co. opens its doors in Kendrick
With financial pressure and frustration with Idaho Gov. Brad Little mounting, Hardware Brewing Co. defied the Republican governor’s Stay Healthy Order and opened its doors on May 1 in downtown Kendrick, spokesman.com reported.

Idaho Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, R-Idaho Falls; state Sen. Dan Johnson, R-Lewiston; state Rep. Mike Kingsley, R-Lewiston; and Idaho GOP chairman and Raul Labrador, former U.S. Congressman for Idaho’s First District, were among the roughly 30 people who gathered in the first hour at the business to express their support and perhaps indulge in a brew or burger.

Law enforcement visited the business multiple times on May 1.

Christine Lohman, who owns Hardware Brewing Co. with her husband, Doug, said a Latah County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped by prior to the business opening at 4 p.m. asking if the owners understood the governor’s order. She said she told the deputy they did and he left.

Idaho State Police Detective Jake Schwecke had a somewhat lengthy discussion with the owners around 4:30 p.m. Political officials stood nearby, and some appeared to engage in the conversation as well.

Schwecke told the Daily News that he told the owners they were in violation of the governor’s order and that he was not going to interfere ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Heineken launches voucher program to support restaurant owners and staff
Even though Mexico's beer industry is on the brink of collapse Heineken Mexico has launched a voucher program that aims to support restaurant owners and their staff during the economic crisis brought by COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent article.

Indeed, in this outbreak, it is not the large companies but the small businesses that are mostly affected.

Heineken's Por Tu Restaurante (For Your Restaurant) campaign will benefit 10,000 bars and restaurants across Mexico, as well as 50,000 servers and other staff.

The mechanics for this promo is simple: Buy vouchers for future meals at selected partner restaurants on the program site. Once in-house service has resumed, the coupons will take effect, and depending on the amount of purchase; you can also get two to eight free beers.

You can also add a 10-15 percent tip for every purchase, and Heineken will match it until the fund reaches a maximum of 4 million pesos or US$168,000.

In early April, Heineken and other beer makers in Mexico have already halted production after the federal government included beer in the list of nonessential agro-industrial products.

Across Mexico and around the world, breweries are one of the most affected industries given that bars and restaurants have closed. A month ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: JDub’s Brewing Company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
One of Sarasota’s most beloved local breweries has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported on May 5.

JDub’s Brewing Company — known for beers like Bell Cow milk chocolate porter and Poolside Kolsch, and for its brewery where people gather to watch live music, do yoga and just hang out — filed a petition with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Middle District of Florida on April 6.

Daniel Etlinger, the Tampa-based bankruptcy attorney representing JDub’s, said the brewery, owned by Jeremy Joerger, has every intention of continuing to operate.

Before COVID-19, JDub’s was trying to put itself into a position to sell or possibly merge with another brewery, Etlinger said. The company took on additional debt to put itself into a better position for a possible sale.

But once Major League baseball spring training was canceled, and restaurants took a significant hit and were ordered to close, business suffered, according to court documents. The brewery closed its taproom on March 20 as a safety precaution.

“The debtor believes very strongly in its business model and reputation,” court documents filed by Etlinger read. “However, the significant amount of energy and time the debtor has been forced to spend dealing with the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Pomona’s Sanctum Brewing closed, possibly permanently
Sanctum Brewing was Pomona’s first brewpub when it opened in January 2014. Six years and three more brewpubs later, Sanctum is closed, possibly permanently, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported on May 5.

“This coronavirus hit us incredibly hard,” co-founder Scott Lucas said in a video posted to Instagram last Friday. “We can no longer afford to keep the lights on.”

Sanctum was a tenant in the Pomona Packing Plant, a 1916 industrial facility that was renovated in 2013 for artist studios. Sanctum founders Jason Stevens and Lucas sold their brew at craft beer events before raising $40,000 via Kickstarter to open a brewery.

Lucas didn’t go into detail in his video and a message to Sanctum wasn’t returned in time for this column. But he said 2020 had been “a rough year for us” even before the virus meant shutting down other than for to-go sales.

Thanking customers for their support, Lucas said the hope is that another brewery will take over the space. In the meantime, he said Sanctum would try to open one last time “to sell as much beer as possible” and asked followers to stay tuned.

Brewery news World: Drinks industry not popping any corks despite soaring sales at retail outlets
When Lionel Platteuw started planning how he would cope under Belgium’s coronavirus lockdown, there was one item he wanted to make sure he had enough of – alcohol, Reuters reported on May 6.

“My first concern was that we didn’t have enough beer and wine,” said the Brussels-based consultant. “I wasn’t concerned about toilet paper, but I didn’t want to be stuck at home without alcohol supplies.”

Soaring sales of beer, wine and spirits at retail outlets suggest drinkers across the world took a similar attitude.

Sales at British liquor stores leapt a third in March, while those for alcohol at U.S. retailers shot up more than 50% in the week after the country entered a state of national emergency.

But the drinks industry isn’t popping any corks.

The surge in demand came as sales through bars, clubs and restaurants fell to zero as they were closed to contain the virus. And even as countries start to ease restrictions, these venues are likely to be at the back of the line to reopen.

Manufacturers have also faced supply disruptions and, in some countries, even a ban on sales as authorities worry excessive drinking could jeopardise social distancing efforts.

A deep global economic downturn also looks set to ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Malaysia’s brewers resume operations
Malaysia’s drinkers have something to cheer about as breweries resume operations to ensure enough supply for them, The Sun Daily reported on May 8.

Data gathered from social media activity by Wisesight showed that although beer brands had moved online to meet customers’ demand, many drinkers were still left unsatisfied.

The social media analysing service provider found that several delayed online orders had left customers feeling frustrated. However, the resumption of production should ensure prompt delivery.

Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini said they are looking forward to full lifting of the movement control order (MCO) on May 12.

“The safety and welfare of our employees remain our top priority, all of whom have received full salary while on leave or working from home,” he told The Sun on May 7.

“We already have in place workforce segregation and enhanced sanitisation measures in line with the industry standards for health, safety, and quality assurance.”

Clini said his company’s business continuity plan also encompasses more aggressive cost-saving measures and reallocation of marketing spending.

“We plan to focus on digital campaigns, e-commerce, off-trade consumption and donations to the communities we operate in,” he said.

Carslberg Malaysia will also be announcing initiatives to kick-start their recovery, especially for on-trade customers who ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries Ltd resumes operations with limited workforce and in phased manner
United Breweries Limited (UBL) has resumed its operations with a limited workforce in a phased manner as per the directives of government authorities, Indiainfoline reported on May 6.

In an exchange filing on May 5, the company informed that the operations at the breweries are being carried out in full compliance of the precautionary measures, conditions and directions as mentioned in the guidelines of the authorities on the COVID19 safety advisories.

The company had halted operations on March 23, 2020, in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak in India.

UBL shares were down ~2% at the BSE and it is trading at Rs894, down Rs 16.20 or 1.78% than its previous close of Rs910.20.

“United Breweries Limited has taken all recommended precautions in its operations, which includes – sanitization and hygiene, thermal scanning, maintaining physical and social distancing and deep cleansing of premises,” the company said in its release on May 5.

“The Company is closely monitoring the situation to take timely action on gradual resumption towards full operations to the extent possible under the regulations and continues to treat safety of its staff and stakeholders as priority,” it added.

Brewery news France: 10 mln litres of unsold beer will have to be destroyed in France – Union of French Brewers
The union for French breweries says 10 million litres of beer will have to be destroyed due to the closure of bars and restaurants under the coronavirus lockdown, putting even more pressure on business owners already struggling with the uncertainty of when they will be able to reopen, Yahoo News UK reported on May 6.

"The sudden closing of restaurants, cafés, bars, tourism and the cancellation of festivals and trade fairs means at least 10 million litres of beer, mostly in barrels, is going to waste," the organisation Brasseurs de France said in a statement on May 5.

"At the end of winter, brasseries stocked up on beer for the coming season, which they haven't been able to sell," it added, citing the lockdown that came into force on 17 March.

The reason it needs to be destroyed, is that the beer in fashion at the moment is unpasteurised, which makes it more fragile, contrary to the classic blond beers.

"This type of beer is full of hops, and if you keep it too long, over two or three months, the taste and aroma disappears.

"The destruction of the beer will have a considerable economic impact on business owners," the union said, calling on ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Liquor companies stocks fall as some states hike excise duty
Shares of Indian liquor companies were under pressure for second straight day on May 6 after some state governments hiked excise duty on liquor, the Business Standard reported.

United Breweries, Radico Khaitan, United Spirits, GM Breweries, Associated Alcohols & Breweries and Globus Spirits declined between 3 per cent and 7 per cent in intra-day trade on the BSE. In comparison, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 1.2 per cent or 402 points at 31,855 at 12:26 pm. On May 5, these stocks had ended lower in the range of 3 per cent to 8 per cent on the BSE.

In the five trading days prior to that, most of the liquor stocks had outperformed the market by gaining up to 19 per cent, as the government allowed the opening of liquor shops from May 4 with certain conditions. The benchmark index was up 1.2 per cent during the same period. After today's fall, the stocks erased all the gains from May 4th's rally.

Some state governments, including Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, decided to restrict the timings of liquor shops as well as hike excise duty as a step to restrict buying, while the Mumbai Municipal Corporation decided to shut all liquor shops in ...More info on site

Brewery news Barbados: Beer and spirits makers welcome lifting of ban on alcohol sales
Barbados’ beer and spirit makers welcomed on May 6 the lifting of the ban on alcohol sales as part of Phase Two of the national reopening strategy, but strongly urged Barbadians to drink responsibly, Barbados Today reported.

Spokesman for the Barbados Alcohol Industry Association (BAIA) Raphael Grisoni, Managing Director of Mount Gay Distilleries, said: “We are thankful to be able to have our employees back on the job so that they can continue to provide for their families and also to be able to play our part in stimulating the economy. However, we want to remind Barbadians to be responsible.

“Please follow the guidelines set out by Government as it relates to the sale of alcohol only on licensed premises as well as the prohibition of consumption on these premises. In other words, we should only be consuming alcohol in our homes during this time, not in rum shops, restaurants, at parties or gatherings.

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries set to dump 132 mln litres of beer if government does not permit to transport alcohol
South African Breweries (SAB) on May 7 called for the government to reconsider the ban on the sale and local transportation of alcohol as the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic crashed a strong performance in the first two months of the year.

SAB warned that the continued sales ban and the prevention of transporting the inventory to the warehouses would come at a huge cost for both the company and the government.

The brewer said that it currently has 132 million litres of beer - roughly the equivalent of 400 million bottles of beer - sitting in its tanks.

“If SAB is not able to resume transporting inventory, it will be forced to discard this inventory at a loss of an estimated R150 million.

"The economic effects for the government would be even more severe. The immediate loss to the government in excise tax would be R500m as the government does not collect excise for unpacked beer,” SAB said.

The warning comes as international beer consumption plunged on the Covid-19 lockdown ban of alcohol sales.

SAB parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) on May 7 said that its volumes tumbled 9.3percent decline, slashing its revenue 5.8percent and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation falling 13.7 percent to ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coronavirus pandemic forces brewers to ditch 4.5 mln litres of beer
Close to a 25 million schooners of beer will go down the drain within weeks in Australia due to COVID-19, 7NEWS.com.au reported on May 6.

Thousands and thousands of kegs of unwanted beer have been left ‘unwanted’ as the coronavirus crisis halts demand.

South Australian brewers took the beverages back from local pubs after they were forced to close their doors six weeks ago.

“It’s a scary amount when you see it stacked up on the pallet - it’s a lot of beer,” local publican Sam Ferguson said.

“We’re fortunate enough to be a small venue but there’s of lot of big venues out there that are tossing a lot of beer down the drain.”

Lion Australia is emptying 90,000 kegs – about 4.5 million litres – across the country at onside wastewater treatment plants.

They are using the discarded brew to create biogas, which can be used to make more beer.

Across the country, brewers have tried unsuccessfully to find a use for it - even offering it to farmers to mix with cattle feed.

Carlton & United Breweries, which owns VB, Carlton Draught and Corona, has donated thousands of two-litre glass containers to pubs to help them to sell takeaway beer.

It’s a much-needed revenue stream, but ...More info on site
