Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance plans divestment of Kona Brewing operations in Hawaii to get approval for merger with AB InBev
Craft Brew Alliance announced on June 10 plans to divest of its Kona Brewing operations in Hawaii in an effort to gain regulatory approval for its planned merger with Anheuser-Busch InBev, Brewbound reported.

Contingent upon CBA’s combination with A-B closing later this year, Kona’s operations in Hawaii — including its brewpubs in Kailua-Kona and Honolulu, as well as its under-construction 30,000 sq. ft., 100,000-barrel brewery — would be sold to PV Brewing Partners, a partnership between former A-B president Dave Peacock and Overland Park, Kansas-based family office VantEdge Partners.

The rights to the Kona brand in the other 49 states and international markets would go to A-B in the CBA deal. The world’s largest beer manufacturer would manage the Kona brand, its brewing, production, innovation and distribution outside of Hawaii.

“We are committed to working with regulators and facilitating the successful review and close of our expanded partnership with A-B,” Andy Thomas, CEO of CBA, said in a press release. “We are delighted to have found a strong buyer that will continue to nurture the spirit of the Kona brand in Hawaii and offer its employees, who will remain part of Kona’s Hawaii operations, further opportunities for growth and development.”

Brewery news Australia: Fears for Australia’s craft brewers hit by Covid-19
The boss of newly ASX-listed malt producer United Malt fears some craft brewers won't survive the coronavirus shutdowns, but is confident his business will benefit from the long-term growth in craft beer around the globe once the pandemic eases, Brisbane Times reported on June 10.

Mark Palmquist said a survey of North American micro brewers found that more than 30 per cent said they would not be able to survive a shutdown of more than three months.

"We're hearing similar anecdotal evidence inside Australia," he said. "What we're hoping is that it won't be that bad in Australia just because you're relaxing the restrictions at a faster pace."

While some craft brewers could be forced out of business, their manufacturing might not be lost if their brewery was continued by another operator, he said.

Kylie Lethbridge, general manager of the Independent Brewers Association, which represents Australian independent brewers, said the coronavirus-induced lockdowns have had a significant impact on an industry that had been growing rapidly before the pandemic.

"Coming out of restrictions is a boon, but it's absolutely the case that some won't survive," she said, pointing to independent brewers that have been forced to stand down staff and cut or completely cease production.

"We've been ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion Australia forced to temporarily shut down production after a cyber attack on its website
One of Australia’s largest breweries has been forced to temporarily shut down production after a cyber attack on its website, 7NEWS.com.au reported on June 10.

Lion Australia, which produces Hahn, Tooheys, XXXX Gold and West End among other beverages, was subject to a “cyber incident” on June 9.

The company has shut down its IT systems in response to the attack while it investigates.

Lion says suppliers and customers will experience some disruption due to the incident.

“We’re working with expert advisors to address the issue,” Lion said in a statement.

“We have alerted the authorities and are working hard to minimise disruption to customers and suppliers.

“We will provide further updates when we can and we thank our customers and suppliers for their patience.”

Every one of Lion’s breweries across the country has halted its production lines, but the company has told 7NEWS there is currently enough beer to satisfy demand.

Brewery news Mexico: Grupo Modelo launches versions of Corona and Victoria beers containing just 1.8% alcohol
The Grupo Modelo beer company, which makes 17 brands of beer including Pacífico, Modelo and Corona, has added two new brands to its portfolio, versions of Corona and Victoria containing just 1.8% alcohol, the Mexico News Daily reported on June 9.

“At Grupo Modelo we are always looking to transform ourselves in order to give our consumers a wide variety of products for different consumption occasions,” said president Cassiano de Stefano on Monday. “Today a unique segment is born in Mexico that is characterized by its low alcohol content and that represents a historical event for two of the most important brands in the country.”

It’s not a coincidence that the two new brands were released during the coronavirus pandemic. Beer with less than 2% alcohol content is not considered an alcoholic beverage by the federal government and is thus marketable in municipalities that have enacted dry laws due to the coronavirus.

Victoria Chingones was also designed to help support more than 4,000 farmers affected by the halt to beer production after it was deemed a nonessential business, Grupo Modelo said.

Between 2013 and 2018, the total amount of beer consumed in Mexico, regardless of alcohol content, grew 56.2% with constant ...More info on site

Brewery news Croatia: Craft brewer Garden Brewery to start trading on Zagreb Stock Exchange
The shares of Croatian craft beer maker The Garden Brewery will start trading on the Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE) on June 12, the bourse operator said on June 9.

A total of 80,807 company shares with a nominal value of 500 kuna ($75/66 euro) each will start trading on the bourse's regular market, following a request for their listing submitted by The Garden Brewery on June 8, ZSE said in a statement.

In April, the Croatian financial regulator approved the brewer's share listing prospectus, noting that the company, which is active in a sector exposed to high risk in the coronavirus crisis, plans to focus on online sales in the coming period.

The largest single shareholder of The Garden Brewery is local mandatory pension fund AZ B category with a 30.82% stake, followed by local individual Milan Badelj with 29.72%, and voluntary pension fund AZ Profit with 9.9%, the company's prospectus posted on the ZSE website showed.

AZ pension funds are managed by Allianz ZB, a company owned by Allianz Zagreb and Croatia's Zagrebacka Banka.

In October, AZ pension funds injected 20 million kuna into the capital of The Garden Brewery, acquiring a 49.5% ownership stake and entering the segment of small and medium-sized companies.
