Brewery news India: Delhi government withdraws corona fee imposed on alcohol
The overcrowding outside liquor shops during the COVID-19 pandemic has scared the Indian authorities. But seeing the declining economy government decided to impose a tax on liquor to boost sales revenue. Back in the month of May, the Kejriwal government imposed a 70% corona fee on the MRP of different types of liquor. Due to this by the end of May the excise department witnessed a total revenue of Rs 234 crore from the sale of liquor, Inventiva reported on June 15.

However, the Delhi government has now decided to withdraw the special corona fee imposed at 70% on the MRP placed on the sale of all types of liquor in the capital. The order came into effect from June 10 onwards. Within 15 days after imposing the corona fee tax on liquor, the Kejriwal government earned around 110 crore from this tax.

Considering past trends alcohol consumption in India amounted to about 5.4 billion litres in 2016, increasing to about 6.5 billion litres by 2020. This steady increase in consumption of these beverages can be directly attributed to multiple factors including the rising levels of disposable income and a growing urban population among others.

In India, several state governments either control liquor ...More info on site

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd has been told to pay RM6.36 million to the Customs Department as a full and final settlement on its bill of demand for sales tax and excise duty, The Edge Markets MY reported on June 15.

In a filing, Carlsberg said it received on June 15 a letter dated June 3, 2020 from the Royal Malaysian Customs of Selangor notifying the company of its decision regarding the company's appeal for remission of the bill of demand dated Sep 17, 2014.

Carlsberg said it shall proceed to remit the payment of RM6.36 million as the agreed total claimable amount to the Customs, as full and final closure of the matter.

In September 2014, Carlsberg said it was slapped with excise duty, sales tax and penalty claims amounting to RM56.4 million.

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro enjoying heyday for the first time in 10 years
Korean liquor brand Hite Jinro Co. is enjoying its heyday for the first time in 10 years in sales and stock price thanks to a double homerun with Terra beer and soju Jinro whose clean taste mixed with nostalgic marketing style created a splash in the world’s best-selling spirit, the Pulse News reported on June 15.

Hite Jinro revisited above 40,000 won for the first time since Jan. 5 2010 to close Friday, June 12 2.7 percent up at 40,200 won ($33.08).

On June 15, Hite Jinro shares rose 1.99 percent additionally to finish at 41,000 won.

Its new beer brand Terra has been enjoying a solid sale on the back of the skyrocketing popularity of a mixture of Terra and Chamilsul soju called Tesla (Tesula, Terra+Chamisul). Hite Jinro shares more than doubled in just 15 months since it first released Terra on March 21, 2019. Terra sold 860 million bottles by the end of May, shaking up the nation’s beer market. Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev launches new Victoria beer
AB InBev has launched a new beer, with a marketing story that attacks Duvel beer head-on, The Brussels Times reported on June 8.

The new beer, called “Victoria” is a blond beer with 8.5% alcohol that referments in the bottle. The label shows an angel holding the devil to the ground, and the marketing story behind the new beer has several references to the devil, such as a story of the victory of Archangel Saint Michael over the devil.

Additionally, AB InBev promotes Victoria as “100% natural” and also refers to “the evil, false and artificial,” which is “characteristic of the ways of the devil.”

“This is just an open attack,” beer sommelier Jeroen Peeters of the Antwerp pub Dr. Beer told Het Nieuwsblad. “They also choose the former name of Duvel. Anyone who knows anything about beer history knows that it was once called ‘Victory Ale’,” he added.

Duvel, the iconic blond specialty beer of the Moortgat brewery, has always been very successful, and it is not the first time other breweries try to beat it.

“We have established that the segment of strong, blond beers is growing,” AB InBev spokesperson Karolien Cloots told Het Nieuwsblad. “We follow this consumer trend, and therefore complete ...More info on site

Barley news Canada & USA: General weather situation benign for barley planting and crop in both countries
Early estimates for crop 2020 are: Canadian acreage 2.95 mln ha, production 10.15 mln tonnes. U.S. production as per USDA 3.96 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.

In spite of occasional frost/snow/dryness problems, the general weather situation was benign for barley planting and crop development to-date in both countries. Particularly in southern Alberta heavy rains ended a year-long drought.

Export estimates for 2020/21 are 1.9 – 2.0 mln tonnes for Canada and 120 thousand tonnes for the USA. Registered Canadian exports in Aug/March 2019/20 were 1.037 mln tonnes to China, 340 thousand tonnes to Japan and 33 thousand tonnes to the U.S.

China has authorized imports of U.S. barley. However, neither crop size, price levels nor logistics should enable the U.S. to use this outlet to a larger extent, the Gauger analysts said. Canada has sold to China between 1.5 and 2.0 mln tonnes of barley per year, Chinese maltsters appreciate the quality. Following the closure of the Chinese market for Australian barley, Canadian exporters hope to increase their volume by at least half a million tonnes in 2020/21.
