Barley news Canada: Total barley supply up by 17% in 2019-20
For 2019-20, the total supply of barley in Canada increased by 17% from 2018-19 due to higher production despite historically low carry-in stocks, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their June report.

Total domestic use is expected to increase by 20%, largely due to strong feed use.

Exports for the first nine months of the crop year fell by 22% and 3% for barley grains and products, respectively. Total exports are expected to decrease based on the export pace.

Carry-out stocks are forecast to rise sharply from last year largely due to the significant increase in supply.

Increased barley supplies in Canada and around the world have weighed on barley prices. For the crop-year to-date, barley prices in the Prairie Provinces declined from a year ago but remained strong. For the entire crop year, the feed barley price at Lethbridge feedlots is expected to be 12% lower than last year.

Since 2014-15, China has been the largest export market for Canadian barley, taking more than half of Canadian barley grain exports. For 2019-20 to April, exports to China decreased by 18% particularly due to the declined exports to this country in February and March and nil in April.

Hops news Canada: Hop growing getting a lot of attention in the last five years
Hops might possibly be the most intensive crop you could grow in Canada, and aren’t for the faint of heart. Growing hops commercially has gotten a lot of attention in the last five years on the Prairies with the influx of craft breweries. Previously, hops were mainly grown in Ontario and British Columbia, and, in B.C. in particular, hops were a major commodity in the lower mainland until production moved south to the Yakima Valley in Washington and parts of Oregon and Idaho, RealAgriculture reported on June 24.

Ball park installation costs for a hop yard is C$12,000 per acre, more or less. Production inputs are approximately C$700 per acre, with labour costs being equivalent to that amount, so in total C$1,400 per acre to grow each year. In addition to production costs, specialized equipment is required including bine-cutters (it’s a bine, not a vine), a stationary picker that isn’t made in North America, drying boxes or space to dry them, balers, and a pelletizer, if you plan on selling them dry, not fresh. Hops require processing knowledge that has been missing in B.C. since the ’80s and what knowledge is left over is time-stamped and isn’t considered valid anymore.

Brewery news USA, RI: Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling acquires Radian Pig Beer Company
Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co., a Newport, Rhode Island based craft brewery and distillery, further expands its brand portfolio with the acquisition of Radiant Pig Beer Company. With Braven Brewing Company and Radiant Pig Beer Company, Newport Craft’s stable of products now includes 26 authentic beers, and over 10 craft spirit and cocktail labels, the Newport Buzz reported on June 22.

Since launching in 2013, Radiant Pig has created innovative, high-quality beers with colorful names and stories inspired by the art, music, and culture of New York City. Radiant Pig’s year- round favorites include its flagship IPA “Save the Robots”, “TV Party” a New England pale ale, “Own the Night” Hazy IPA, “It Ain’t Easy” Double IPA, “No Half Steppin” Single Hop IPA, and “Junior”, a session IPA.

“In order to continue to deliver the level of quality expected of Radiant Pig and to satisfy the ever-growing demand, it was important for me to find a partner with the same vision and commitment to quality and authenticity, and I found that in Newport Craft. Getting to know CEO Brendan O’Donnell and the Newport Craft team over the past year, we discovered that we not only shared a vision but a commitment ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Rubber Soul Brewing to be brought to Hummelstown later this summer
The air is back in the tires at Rubber Soul Brewing, pennlive.com reported on June 24.

The one-time Maryland-based brewery was sold to new partners who are bringing the brand later this summer to Hummelstown.

Owners and Hummelstown residents Michael VanGavree, Joe Perkins and Michael Martini last year purchased Rubber Soul’s assets out of bankruptcy. It was started in 2015 by Steelton native Jesse Prall.

The new partners are in the midst of transforming a former borough building in the 100 block of South Hanover Street across from the Olde Antique Shop and Rita’s Italian Ice. They expect to open it in August.

“It’s definitely going to be exciting to see what people remember and it will be exciting to see what people think about the new beer,” said Jamie Mowery Lewis, the brewery’s head of marketing.

A seven-barrel system will produce Rubber Soul beer for a 10-tap system, cans and crowlers. Head brewer is Donovan “Dono” Krebs, who previously worked at Manyunk Brewing Company, Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company and most recently at Levante Brewery in West Chester.

While the Rubber Soul name and beer are familiar, Lewis cautioned it won’t be the same. They will brew some of the original recipes but the beers might ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Tradewinds Brewing Company holds soft opening in Riverhead
As the director of operations of a new Riverhead-based brewery, Duffy Griffiths has found himself back where he was five years ago. Until 2015, Griffiths was the original brewer at Crooked Ladder Brewery, which closed last year, and now he is opening up Tradewinds Brewing Company in that same spot along with his wife Wendy and business partner Kristi Macdonald, Northforker reported on June 24.

Located at 70 West Main Street in downtown Riverhead, Tradewinds held a soft opening last weekend with five beers on the menu — the Lilly light lager, the No Paddle pilsner, the Alsatian Hefeweizen, the New Guy! New England IPA and the Breaking Tide double IPA.

After spending four years at Greenport Harbor Brewery as the director of brewing operations, Griffiths left to focus on the small boutique, high-end craft beer destination he hopes Tradewinds can become, he said. The Hefeweizen, the first beer of their summer season, he describes as refreshing with banana and clove flavorings. The New Guy! IPA is super hoppy and hazy with coconut notes and tropical fruit flavors while Breaking Tide, the double IPA, has classic citrus notes.

“It’s eight and a half percent,” Griffiths said. “That’s definitely not something you can have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Elevator Brewing Co. for sale
Elevator Brewing Co. — one of the oldest craft breweries in Ohio — is for sale, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on June 23.

“It’s sad,” co-founder Dick Stevens said. “I never envisioned that this is how this thing would end, having to put it up for sale. I always thought I could find the right people and sell it to the employees but that just didn’t happen.”

He blamed the Columbus production brewery’s demise mainly on the coronavirus and how it’s impacted his ability to sell beer. Breweries were hard hit by the closure of bars and restaurants because of the pandemic.

Stevens also cited poor taproom sales since being allowed to reopen and his age as factors. He’s 81.

He put an ad on ProBrewer.com late last week offering to sell the production equipment, Elevator brand and downtown Columbus building for $750,000. He said he would prefer not to sell off the brewery in pieces.

Stevens and his son Ryan — who were just beer drinkers and not brewers or restauranteurs — launched the production brewery in Marysville in 1999 when the craft brewing industry was still in its infancy. Back then, there were only about 45 breweries scattered throughout Ohio — many ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Government approves changes to federal crop insurance for malting barley
Changes are coming to the crop insurance program for malting barley, KFGO News reported on June 26.

The USDA Risk Management Agency and the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation Board of Directors have approved changes to the malting barley endorsement for federal crop insurance.

U.S. Senator John Hoeven says utilizing the local market price for barley will help ensure fair compensation for malting barley. He adds, that he appreciates the FCIC and RMA Administrator Barbre for making the adjustment, which will ensure that this specific crop insurance policy reflects the actual prices producers are receiving, ensuring producers are compensated accurately.

The malting barley endorsement provides quality loss coverage for growers that produce malting barley under contract.

Brewery news USA, GA: Ironshield Brewing opening its doors in July
A new brewery is opening its doors in July with a Lawrenceville taproom and an uncommon business model, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on June 24.

Customers will be able to get classic European-style beers — German lagers, Belgian ales, Irish stouts — at Ironshield Brewing on N. Clayton Street in Lawrenceville. Behind the scenes, staff will be operating a contract brewing system, Big Kettle Brewing, designed to help small brewers scale up production when they don’t have the space or the money to add more capacity to their own site.

“A lot of small craft brewers can’t afford a good can line or a good packaging line,” said owner Glen Sprouse. “We have the ability to virtually duplicate the way they brew their beer. This allows them to scale up without having to go back to the bank and borrow more money as they expand.

”Ironshield Brewing will welcome customers into its taproom and beer garden starting July 11. The space has plenty of room — the taproom is 4,000 square feet, the beer garden is 6,000 square feet and the bar is 45 feet long — which will help customers maintain social distance while still allowing them to have a beer. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Harris Family Brewery to become Pennsylvania’s first wholly black-owned brewery
While the historically white craft beer industry has made strides over the last few years in welcoming females into the ranks of equity owners, beer has a long way to go in terms of racial diversity. But in Pennsylvania, one hurdle has been cleared as Harris Family Brewery just successfully raised money for their GoFundMe, Forbes reported on June 23.

“I gotta take medicine to take my blood pressure down,” says Tim White, one of the brewery’s three passionate owners. “It was dry for months. Then this week, it took off.”

When it opens, Harris Family Brewery will be Pennsylvania’s first wholly black-owned brewery. The second, Philadelphia’s Two Locals Brewing Company, isn’t far behind. And Mack Brewing Co., while not technically a licensed brewery, often showcases their products around Philadelphia.

“We have a location,” says White. “Slowly but surely, it’s happening.”

Harris Family Brewery is a brewery-in-planning in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, founded by Shaun Harris, JT Thomas, and Tim White. When it opens, Harris Family Brewery will be Pennsylvania’s first black-owned brewery.

“We’ve been working on the project for four years,” says White. “Honestly, I thought we’d be open by now. I was going to apply for a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: South Beach Brewing Company to open own production facility on South Beach
A microbrewery will soon open on South Beach, the Miami New Times reported on June 23.

Known for its Florida-inspired brunch beers, South Beach Brewing Company has produced craft brews in partnership with Shipyard and Sea Dog Brewing since 2017, but the company never had its own stand-alone brewhouse.

Until now. After two and a half years of testing the waters, the company will finally debut its bungalow-style brewery next month — on South Beach.

“It looks like a Key West house — like it’s someone’s home that you’re being invited to,” cofounder Lorenzo Borghese says. “You share beers with neighbors and friends and family, so it’s the same idea.”

Created as a beer brand that’s all about Florida, South Beach Brewing uses Florida orange juice and citrus fruits in most of its products and adds electrolytes.

“South Beach is known as a destination for vacation and about enjoying every moment in time, so we wanted to create a sense of a vacation beer,” says Borghese.

The brewery is housed in a bungalow on 11th Street between Washington and Collins avenues. Out front, there's an outdoor beer garden. Inside, Miami artist Lebo, whose artwork appears on all of South Beach Brewing's beer bottles ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Humboldt Park’s first brewery targeting late July or early August opening
A lot has changed since last year when the team behind Orkenoy announced plans to open Humboldt Park’s first brewery. The beer is just a small part of the ambitious project, located off the 606 elevated trail at Kimball, and it is now targeted to open in late July or early August inside the Kimball Arts Center. Orkenoy will lean into that setting with a philosophy similar to an arts collective. The space will host concerts, gallery shows, and more. The kitchen talent also includes chefs who’ve worked at a trio of popular Chicago brewpubs, Eater Chicago reported on June 23.

Last year, the team was fronted by Jonny Ifergan (a musician who plays in a rock band called the Kickback) and Ryan Sanders (a chef who worked a Lagunitas Brewing in Douglas Park and High Dive bar in West Town). They’ve added two new members. Briana Hestad is Orkenoy’s operations manager. She’s worked in England at London Beer Lab. They’ve also named Madison Burns as sous chef. She worked at Forbidden Root in West Town and at Band of Bohemia, America’s only Michelin-starred brewpub.

Range Design & Architecture is designing the space. They’ve worked on Hopewell Brewing in Logan Square and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: The Landing Beer Company slated to open in Fort Wayne soon
A new brewhouse is slated to open their doors to the public soon in Fort Wayne's historic city center at The Landing, wpta21.com reported on June 24.

The Landing Beer Company plans to serve up craft beer and good eats along Columbia Street.

Co-founder Brendon Maxwell said the location along the up-and-coming area is a perfect spot to open his beer and BBQ business.

"I've been long interested in this block and have felt like it has the most potential of any block in the city," Maxwell said.

"We've spent a lot of time on this. We were intentional about the ways were were investing. The location alone will make this an exciting place to come."

Maxwell teamed up with Caleb France, who owns the Cerulean restaurant in Winona Lake, to bring The Landing Beer Company to Fort Wayne.

The pair hired a production brewer from southern California to help them run the business.

The brewery is eyeing a soft opening on July 4th with a block party on the Landing.

You can expect food trucks, live music, and of course beer for the event that begins at 11 a.m. on Independence day.

The Landing was home to Fort Wayne’s first post office, theater and hotel, and now it’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Shorts Brewing Company buys Arcadia Ales beer portfolio
Shorts Brewing Company is adding to their portfolio, 9&10 News reported on June 22.

But not with a beer of their own, instead reviving an old rival brand.

“Arcadia began in 1996, which really was one of the OGs,” says Scott Newman-Bale, CEO of Shorts Brewing. “It’s very old for craft beer.”

The canning line at Shorts is about to get busier after the Antrim County based brewer bought the beer portfolio of Arcadia Ales, out of Battle Creek, who closed for good in September.

“We talked to key accounts and distributors about Arcadia and universally there was very positive feedback,” says Newman-Bale, “Specifically with Whitsun. There’s just a brand there with a lot of loyalty.”

Whitsun was Arcadia’s best selling beer and it’s going to be the first one that Shorts is going to brew under the Superfluid label.

Newman-Bale says everything came together really quickly, but already it’s paying off. They have nearly hit their 2020 goals in pre-sales already.

“We started to take it a little more seriously and try to figure out what that brand is going to be and what it’s going to represent,” Newman-Bale says.

The beers will be brewed and packaged in Elk Rapids—beginning with Whitsun, but more Arcadia staples will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: New Republic Brewing Company closing for good on June 27
New Republic Brewing Company will be closing its doors Saturday, June 27, KBTX reported.

General Manager Leigh-Anne McGarel tells KBTX beer distribution at local grocery stores, liquor stores, bars and restaurants will continue until products run out.

McGarel says they anticipate cans to be in stores for the next two to three months and kegs in bars and restaurants for the next six months.

New Republic Brewing Company released a statement explaining the reasoning behind the closing.

“We are unable to continue operating at the current facility and were unable to secure another location that would support the long-term operation of New Republic. This, combined with factors that have affected the whole industry, has forced us to close. We encourage our fans and supporters to keep following us on social media for updates, as things are very fluid and uncertain at this time. We are amenable to selling the company, but this early on it’s difficult to tell how things will play out.”

Brewery news USA, AR: Fayetteville’s Apple Blossom Brewery is now closed permanently
A Fayetteville brewery and restaurant that opened in 2013 has permanently closed, the Fayetteville Flyer reported on June 24.

Apple Blossom Brewery co-owner Evan McDonald announced the closure in a video posted to the brewery’s Facebook page on June 23.

“We tried to do what we could with the reality that we are living in, but we couldn’t make work,” he said.

McDonald encouraged viewers of the video to continue to support other local businesses during this time, and warned that other closures like this could be coming.

“I want to encourage y’all to buy local when you can,” he said. “Please continue to spend your money on local businesses, because this is not going to be the last one of these messages that y’all hear.”

Apple Blossom was the brainchild of Smoke & Barrel Tavern founders Evan McDonald, Sammie Stephenson, Joe Utsch and Al Schaffer, along with brewery partners Ching Mong and Daniel Smith. The partners opened the brewery and restaurant in January 2013 at 1550 E. Zion Road in north Fayetteville.

Fayetteville Flyer beer columnist Brian Sorensen, who also authored Arkansas Beer: An Intoxicating History, reflected on the legacy of Apple Blossom on Twitter.

“When it opened in July 2013 it was one of only ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar’s output reaches highest level in its 124 years
Beer production at Budvar, which has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. giant Anheuser-Busch over use of the "Budweiser" brand, increased last year to the highest level in the brewer's 124-year history, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on June 24.

Budejovicky Budvar NP, a Czech state-owned brewery, said on June 24 that its output rose 4.8% to 1.679 million hectolitres (44.36 million gallons) in 2019, before the pandemic hit global trade and business.

The brewer's exports were up 7.4% to 1.154 million hectolitres (30.49 million gallons) last year, also a record, to almost 80 countries. Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Russia and Britain were the biggest foreign markets for Budvar last year.

Budvar says its revenues hit a record high last year, reaching more than 2.8 billion crowns ($119 million). The profit figures have not been released.

The brewer has been expanding to be able to produce over 2 billion hectolitres of beer a year.

“That’s why it was very, very important right from the start of the lockdown to support the on-trade as much as we could. That’s why we took the decision to bring back all of the beer from the on-trade.”

He added: “Basically ...More info on site
