Barley news Mexico: Barley imports at historical high of 320 thousand tonnes in 2019/20
Mexico’s trade year 2019/20 (Oct – Sep) barley imports are projected at a historical high of 320,000 tonnes, USDA said in its August report.

European Union exports of barley to Mexico have been particularly strong, and higher unit values indicate that it is likely malting quality. In the past, the United States has captured about half or more of Mexico’s total import volume, but market intelligence suggests that major Mexican brewers are turning to the European Union for more favorable buying terms. U.S. producers prefer contract farming for malting barley, whereas EU barley can be purchased at auction or via spot contracts.

Research by J.P. Morgan and the Kirin Company shows that North American beer consumption grew by 0.1 percent between 2011 and 2016. However, looking at the individual countries paints a different picture. While beer consumption in the United States was essentially flat and Canada declined, Mexico had a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 percent over the period.

The expansion of beer consumption in Mexico – and consequently production – is supported by its imports of malt as well. Malt imports have been steadily growing over the last 2 decades. Imports of malt generally exceed those of barley; however, in ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: President accuses Constellation Brands of planning to open new brewery despite rescinded permits
Mexico’s president López Obrador has accused United States beverage company Constellation Brands of planning to go ahead and open its new brewery in Mexicali, Baja California, despite the fact that its permits have been rescinded, the Mexico News Daily reported on August 12.

In March, Mexicali voters shot down the plant in a referendum, with 76.1% voting against it.

López Obrador told reporters on August 12 that he would not allow the American beer, wine, and spirits company to build its plant at the planned site, and that the company should respect the decision of those who voted against it.

Company representatives met with the president on March 31, after which the latter said they had agreed to resolve the issue by conciliation rather than through the courts. He commended them for “rising to the occasion” and said they were an example of good behavior during a conflict.

However, they could have had second thoughts being faced with a US $900-million loss — the amount invested to date in the plant’s construction.

“I told them clearly that the plant was not going to be able to open in Mexicali, but now I have heard — it’s true — that they are looking to reverse ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Vaulted Oak Brewing to open in East Charlotte’s later this year
Vaulted Oak Brewing, East Charlotte’s new brewery opening later this year, is aptly named — it will be inside a former bank, the Charlotte Observer reported on August 12.

The Echo Hills/Oakhurst brewery will serve regionally-inspired beers when it opens at 3726 Monroe Road. The former bank footprint will lend to a perfect social distancing setup in the era of COVID-19. Former bank teller windows will become a walk-up window for patrons. The former drive-thru will serve as outdoor patio space.

Of course, the vault door will play an epic role in the decor of the new space, as well as the pneumatic tubes.

“Visitors can expect a low key atmosphere that plays off of the building’s past but never dives headfirst into the theme. We get it too; a brewery going into a bank .... The building is just a cool space architecturally and has a lot of potential even after we open and start operating,” founder Kiel Arrington told CharlotteFive. “We know that it’s not a historic building and that it’s not a treasured landmark but it was important to us that we keep the integrity of a lot of the building’s features.”

Arrington, Johnie Jones and Chuck Kistler are active partners ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: Fly Llama Brewing to open its doors in Biloxi by mid-October
Fly Llama Brewing will be opening their doors in Downtown Biloxi sometime in mid-October, WXXV News 25 reported on August 12.

The location is formerly Biloxi Brewing Company. The property includes a 10 barrel brew house, full canning line, a taproom, and an outdoor seating area that will be open to the public daily.

Fly Llama Brewing will be dog and family friendly, both on its outdoor patio and inside the taproom.

There will be at least 20 different rotating taps, four year-round beers, hard seltzers, and craft sodas.

Their core beers and seltzer line will be distributed exclusively in Mississippi. Fly Llama Brewing Owner Dave Reese said, “Frankly, we just want to invest in the community here. Biloxi is my home. We want to create jobs here, contribute to the tax base. We just want to make it a cooler place to live and I think we can do that. You’ll see no shortage of different bears going through the tap line each week. Everything from sours to classic lagers to weird and crazy beers.”

Whisky news UK & USA: Whisky jobs at risk as US maintains 25 per cent tariff on single malt imports
A UK whisky industry leader has warned that some brands are being forced out of the market and jobs are at risk following the decision by the US to maintain its 25 per cent tariff on imports of single malt, the John O’Groat Journal reported on August 13.

Karen Betts, chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), claimed that the tariff was causing "huge damage" and compounding the problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The trade body says the whisky industry is being hit hard in its most valuable export market. The 25 per cent tariff was impose on single malt in October 2019 – part of a raft of measures in retaliation for the EU’s subsidising of Airbus – and since then exports of all Scotch whisky to the US have fallen by 30 per cent. This is said to amount to over £200 million in lost exports.

“It’s deeply disappointing to see that the 25 per cent tariff on single malt Scotch whisky exports to the US has been retained by the US government," Ms Betts said. "The tariff is inflicting huge damage on the Scotch whisky sector, with exports to the US down 30 per cent since the tariff ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Protagonist Beer forges ahead on construction of new Charlotte location
One of Charlotte’s brewing newcomers, Protagonist Beer, is excited to forge ahead on construction at its new location in the city’s Lower South End neighborhood. Despite the economic downturn related to COVID-19 which has put a damper on the hospitality business, Protagonist Beer’s owners feel that this new location, situated in the former Broken Spoke space, will offer many solutions toward a safe and enjoyable environment for its beer-loving guests. The team is hopeful for an October 2020 opening, Brewbound reported on August 13.

Protagonist Beer’s first physical location (1,700 sq. ft.) in NoDa opened in May of 2019. After a successful year of brewing their own beers as led by head brewer Jeremy Claeys (formerly of Wicked Weed), collaborating with other local breweries, and pouring excellent regional, national and international beers from their rare Flux Capacitor draft system, Protagonist Beer is excited to move forward with the new location with plans to offer more space, food options, and fun.

Protagonist Beer’s new location, at the corner of Southside and Yancey, will sprawl 15,000 sq. ft. of interior gathering space with a mezzanine, customer-facing barrel-aging room, full kitchen centered around the provision of whole pizza pies and slices available for on-site consumption ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, Washington DC: Other Half Brewing opening 22,000-square-foot production facility in D.C.’s Ivy City neighborhood
Other Half Brewing, whose first brewery and taproom opened in Brooklyn, New York, in 2014, is opening a brewing facility and taproom in D.C.’s Ivy City neighborhood — and it is big, WTOP reported on August 13.

The owners are finishing the buildout at the former Pappas Tomato Factory building at 1401 Okie St. NE, and it should be open by October.

The D.C. Other Half Brewing will include a 22,000-square-foot production facility, and a separate tap room that includes a 7,500-square-foot outdoor patio with a covered pavilion, a roof deck, and a 5,000-square-foot indoor tasting and taproom.

The taproom will have 20 lines of beer on tap.

The brewing program will focus on hazy IPAs, lagers and barrel-aged stouts, as well as local collaborations.

Other Half expects to start brewing beer at the Ivy City location in late September and will initially offer curbside pickup and delivery.

Other Half is known to craft beer fans in New York for its bold labels and unconventional beer names, such as All Green Everything, Space Dream and Magic Green Nuggets. Last year, New York Magazine’s Grub Street food blog called Other Half “the city’s hottest brewery.”

Other Half’s founders are Andrew Burman, Matt Monahan and Sam Richardson.

Brewery news USA, VA: Harvest Gap Brewery coming to western Loudoun by Labor Day weekend
A new brewery is coming to western Loudoun—this one on property that thousands of people have already visited, Loudoun Now reported on August 13.

Mike Virts, the son of the couple behind the Virts Family Farm roadside farm store off Rt. 9 near Hillsboro, is working to open the Harvest Gap Brewery on the same location by Labor Day weekend. Virts said he and his brewer, William Jones of the now-closed Wicked Barn Brewery in Culpeper, are busy brewing a nitro milk stout, a double IPA and an American brown ale. Next, they’ll be brewing a seasonal pumpkin ale and a Märzen Oktoberfest. They’re also looking to collaborate with a couple of Loudoun favorites, Lost Rhino Brewing Co.and Beltway Brewing Co.

The beer is being brewed using the barley Virts has been growing on the property to feed his cattle for the past decade, since he got out of the military after two deployments to Iraq while in the U.S. Marines. Virts and Jones are using a small-barrel brewing system with only three fermenters. They’re also going to plant hops on the property for brewing next spring.

Visitors to the brewery can still expect a taste of the former Virts Family Farm, since they’re ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Golden Cactus Brewing set to open in a few weeks in Roanoke
A new brewery is set to open in a few weeks in downtown Roanoke. The owners of Golden Cactus Brewing have been working about a year to make it all possible, WDBJ7 reported on August 13.

The brewery, at the corner of 5th St. and Rorer Ave., will feature unique beers that can be difficult to find.

“We want to do beers that people haven’t had before,” said co-owner Evan Graham. “A lot of English beers. But I’m also going to do barrel-aged sours, I’m sure I’ll do stouts and things like that when the time comes. But basically I just want to make a good beer.”

When they are fully up and running, Graham said they plan to have about 12 beers on tap that they’ve crafted in house.

Graham said trying to open a business during a pandemic has been difficult, but they plan to take protective measures to keep staff and customers safe.

“We just want to do the right thing, but we also want to open and succeed,” he said. “It’s tough in times like these but we will deal with it as it comes.”

An exact opening date for Golden Cactus Brewing hasn’t been set, but Graham said it should be ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Four major brewers report July beer sales
Four major Japanese brewers on August 13 reported year-on-year falls in sales of beer and quasi-beer products in July, reflecting continuing drops in demand from restaurants and other business customers amid the spread of the new coronavirus, Nippon.com said.

Sales by volume fell 5 pct at Kirin Brewery Co., 9 pct at Suntory Beer Ltd. and 2 pct at Sapporo Breweries Ltd., while sales by value were down 6 pct at Asahi Breweries Ltd. Also behind the slumps was unfavorable weather.

Beer and quasi-beer sales were sluggish in July last year as well, due to bad weather and consumers’ shift to canned “chuhai” spirits.

With many restaurants and pubs now operating by reducing the number of seats for customers to prevent coronavirus infection, sales last month of bottled and barreled beer dropped to 60-70 pct of the year-before levels.

Sales to business-use products are recovering after hitting bottom in April. But an official of a major brewer warned that sales to businesses are likely to fall again amid a recent resurgence in coronavirus cases across the country.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries hopes beer in carton packs of six will lift Covid-19 sales
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) is banking on new model of packaging bottled alcohol to allow customers buy in bulk and consume from home after closure of bars to contain Covid-19 spread, the Business Daily reported on August 14.

The beer-maker has started packaging its bottled beer brands in carton packs of six to allow customers buy as take-away and return bottles once they finish consuming.

Customers will, however, be required to part with Sh17 as deposit per bottle or a total of Sh408 for a carton of 24 bottles.

EABL said the shift from use of crates will make it more convenience for customers given that joints such as bars are closed and consumption within restaurants banned.

“We are introducing a new pack format for ease of home consumption. We are using packs of six in a carton instead of the shopper having to carry loose bottles,” the brewer said in an email response to the Business Daily.

“The packaging is cartons of 24 bottles and each carton has four packs of six. As soon as they are through with consuming the product they have bought, they need to return the empties.”

This comes on the back of EABL net earnings plunging to six-year ...More info on site

Under the agreement, CCN will brew, market and distribute Molson Coors’ Original Light Beer across Nicaragua as a premium international brand from the fourth quarter of this year.

The companies did not reveal the financial terms of the agreement.

Molson Coors Latin America vice-president Chris Wensel said: “We’re excited about expanding further into Nicaragua and continuing to grow throughout the region.

“With this deal, we’re able to close a white space in our footprint, and we’re able to team up with the strongest beer partner possible.”

Established in 1926, CCN is said to be the largest brewer in Nicaragua region and produces beer brands such as Victoria Frost, Mytos and Toña and Toña Light.

Molson Coors already has a relationship with the Latin American company, under which CCN is serving as Miller Lite contract brewer and export it to Honduras.

With this deal, Molson Coors aims to expand its presence in the Latin American market.

In the Latin American region, the company’s brands are available in Mexico, Panama, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile.
