Vietnam: Ministry of Industry and Trade transfers state ownership in Sabeco to State Capital Investment Corporation
|
The Ministry of Industry and Trade late last week transferred the State ownership in Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp (Sabeco) to the State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC), the Vietnam News/ANN reported.
The value handed over to SCIC was more than VNĐ2.3 trillion (US$99.3 million), accounting for 36 per cent of Sabeco’s charter capital, or more than 230 million shares.
Sabeco has become the first enterprise to complete such a transfer among 14 companies that must transfer State capital to SCIC before Aug 31 according to a prime minister decision issued in June.
Up to now, SCIC has taken over VNĐ21.9 trillion ($945.3 million) in State capital in 1,068 enterprises.
After the transfer, SCIC will have to divest all State capital from Sabeco in accordance with the Prime Minister decision.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Friday, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Cao Quoc Hung said the transfer will not interrupt production or business activities of Sabeco and will comply with the current regulations.
Meanwhile, SCIC Chairman Nguyen Duc Chi said SCIC would create the best possible conditions for Sabeco to continue to grow, bringing investment efficiency to all shareholders, including state shareholders.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria struggling to refinance foreign-currency loan
|
Diageo Plc’s Nigeria unit said it’s struggling to refinance a foreign-currency loan and trim costs following a shortage of dollars in Africa’s largest economy, Bloomberg reported on August 28.
Guinness Nigeria Plc is weighing options to manage a $23 million debt as a lack of liquidity in the local foreign-exchange market has made it difficult to refinance, Stanley Njoroge, finance and strategy director, said on an investor call in Lagos on August 28.
“We will want to refinance it but there is no foreign currency in the market at the moment,” he said.
The brewer of Guinness Stout is looking to roll over the loan which matures in May next year, but is yet to decide whether to keep it as a dollar debt or convert to a local-currency loan. Nigeria’s second largest brewer’s outstanding debt rose 16% to 23.2 billion naira ($60 million) as of June compared with a year ago, while finance costs rose 74% to 4.5 billion naira.
Nigerian companies are struggling to access the greenback after a slump in oil prices cut export earnings, putting pressure on the central bank’s capacity to meet dollar obligations to investors and businesses. “Foreign exchange is a big concern for us,” Njoroge said.

Japan & Taiwan: Kirin Holdings to export Japanese craft beer to Taiwan
|
Kirin Holdings will export Japanese craft beer to Taiwan within the year, tapping into a growing market driven by younger drinkers, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on August 29.
Five styles of the Spring Valley Brewery brand will be offered in pours of slightly less than 300 ml for around 180 New Taiwan dollars ($6), a slight premium over drinks from leading local brewers. The beer will be available at about 100 eateries of various types, not just those serving Japanese food.
With the coronavirus tamed in Taiwan, demand for beer and other alcoholic beverages at restaurants is steadily recovering.
Craft beer made up 5% of Taiwan's broader beer market in 2019, growing nearly 1 percentage point in five years. Imports from the U.S., Europe and elsewhere account for about 30% of the beer market, with younger drinkers seeking out new products. The craft segment on the island has more than 20 players.
By contrast, craft beer's share remains under 1% in Japan's beer market.

China: Tsingtao Brewery shareholders sell 36 mln shares in the company
|
Several shareholders of Tsingtao Brewery have sold 36 million shares in the company at HK$68.10 per share, a 3.5 percent discount from the previous closing price, Bloomberg reported on September 1 citing transaction filings.
The sellers include Fosun International (0656), Star Insurance and China Momentum Investment, according to the reports. Shares of the beer maker dropped by 6.7 percent before paring the loss to 4.53 percent, trading at HK$67.40 as of 1:45 pm.

The Czech Republic: Beer prices across Czech Republic keep increasing
|
Price of beer across the Czech Republic has been increasing, and shows no signs of slowing down, Expats.cz reported on September 1.
Plzeňský Prazdroj, a popular brewery in Plzen and the market leader, announced their standard increase in prices this week. It’s likely that other, smaller breweries will follow in their footsteps.
But despite rising prices, Czech residents continue to consume beer. In 2019, according to data from Eurostat, Czech breweries produced more than 29.2 billion crowns worth of beer.
Ten years earlier, in 2009, the total value of beer produced in the Czech Republic was 26.6 billion crowns.
Non-alcoholic beer has become a growing part of the beer market, as well. In 2014, the value of the non-alcoholic beer market was just 870 million crowns. By 2019, it had grown to 1.85 billion crowns. The value of the production rose from 3.2 percent in 2014 to 6.3 percent in 2019.
Czechs have been shifting to non-alcoholic beer choices as they become more health-conscious; non-alcoholic beer represents a less-harmful option to their traditional favourite choice. As the market grows, the non-alcoholic beer options continue to taste more and more like normal beer, too.

Guam: Ishii Brewing Co. to close its doors by the end of September

Ishii Brewing Co., the maker of Minagof beers, is closing its doors by the end of September after 10 years of producing specialty beers on Guam, The Guam Daily Post reported on September 1.
It's the latest in a string of businesses the COVID-19 pandemic has forced to close, with tourism at a standstill and unemployment at a staggering rate.
The brewery's signature Minagof, the CHamoru word for "happiness," is a craft beer especially made for Guam by Toshiyuki Ishii.
"We have been having a hard time and struggling for 10 years already and now we are closing," co-owner Yukiko Ishii said in an email response to The Guam Daily Post.
It's a "hard decision to close the beer business," the Ishiis said on their social media page. "Thank you so much for your patronage over 10 years."
The brewery's distinct beers are the Minagof Pale Ale, Minagof India Pale Ale, Minagof Smoked Porter, Minagof Green Tea IPA and Minagof White IPA.
"We have been trying to spread the value of 'Made in Guam product' locally, but it was much harder than expected," Toshi and Yukiko Ishii said. "Under this pandemic, we truly realized how our sales depended on tourists."

Vietnam: Government introduces fines for selling beer to people under 18
|
People selling beer to those under 18 will be fined VND500,000-1 million ($22-43) under a government decree that takes effect on October 15, VnExpress International reported on August 31.
A 2013 decree sanctioned only the sale of alcohol to underage people and not beer.
Beer establishments need to put up notices saying "Not to sell beer to people under 18 years old." Sellers are responsible for checking the age in case of suspicion a buyer might be underage.
The fines go up to VND3-5 million for selling alcohol and beer through vending machines or at banned locations such as educational and recreational establishments for people under 18.
Those hiring employees under 18 for the production and sales of alcoholic drinks will also be fined VND3-5 million.
The new decree comes in the wake of a law on mitigating the harmful effects of alcohol that took effect this year, stiffening penalties for drunk driving.
Last year Vietnam consumed more than 4.6 billion litres of beer, an increase of more than 10 percent from 2018.
The country spends an average $3.4 billion on alcohol each year, translating to $300 per capita, while spending on related health problems averages $113, according to the Ministry of Health.

China & Australia: China suspends barley imports from Australia’s largest grain exporter CBH Grain
|
China said on September 1 it had suspended barley imports from Australia’s largest grain exporter, a ruling that threatens to inflame bilateral tensions, Reuters reported.
China’s General Administration of Customs said barley shipments from CBH Grain would be halted after pests were found on multiple occasions, the administration said on its official WeChat account.
Representatives for CBH Grain did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
While Beijing’s ruling on CBH Grain did not essentially affect trade after the imposition of more than an 80% tariff on Australian barley earlier this year, it cast a shadow over Australian exports to China.
“It is a signal, showing that Australian firms will be in an unfavourable situation. People will be rather cautious when buying Australian goods now,” said a China-based grains trader, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media.
CBH - a cooperative of farmers - is Australia’s largest grain exporter, regularly selling millions of tonnes of wheat, barley and canola to Asia and the Middle East.
Australia is expected to produce about 10.6 million tonnes of barley this year, with CBH on course to handle about 30%.
China had until recently bought as much as 70% of Australia’s barley exports.

World: Pernod Ricard takes a writedown of 1 billion euros in FY 2019/20
|
French spirits maker Pernod Ricard took a writedown of 1 billion euros ($1.19 billion) in full financial year 2019/20, as the coronavirus-led shutdown of bars and restaurants in most of its markets hit the company's sales and profits, Yahoo Finance reported on September 2.
For the year ahead, the owner of Mumm champagne, Absolut vodka and Martell cognac, predicted a prolonged downturn in travel retail but sees resilience in sales to supermarkets in the United States and Europe and a sequential improvement in China and India.
Pernod Ricard, the world's largest spirits maker after Diageo, said profit from recurring operations fell 13.7% on an organic basis to 2.260 billion euros ($2.69 billion) in the year ended June 30.
This compared with the company's July revised guidance for a 15% decline.
The stronger performance reflected tight cost control and better-than-expected spirits sales to supermarkets in the United States and Europe during the fourth quarter.
Pernod Ricard's impairment charge follows those of other alcoholic beverage makers, Diageo, AB InBev and Heineken.
