Brewery news Australia: Craft beer remains a significant contributor to beer sector’s overall growth
Latest statistics from IRI Worldwide show that craft beer is a significant contributor to Australian beer sector’s overall growth, with ‘indie’ craft surging, BrewsNews reported on September 4.

They also confirm craft has seen a surge during COVID-19. At its height in June, independent beer, which the IRI calls ‘exploration craft’ contributed 83.7 per cent of the craft beer category’s growth that month.

On the other side of the coin, ‘gateway craft’ which the IRI defines as the craft brands owned by the big brewers, and has grown considerably, though still not quite achieving the growth contributions of independent craft.

The data, which does not include scan data from BWS or Dan Murphy’s retail chains of liquor stores, covers the year to 2nd August, and shows spikes in growth in March but a bigger one in December.

Both independent craft beer and corporate craft saw an uplift in the past three months with the total craft category calculated to be worth an estimated A$868.6 million this year alone.

Lachlan Cameron, data and insights consultant at IRI, said that the growth of craft beer has accelerated in the company’s latest Moving Annual Total results (MAT).

“Its importance to the beer category continues to grow. In the prior ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Craft beer sector still in turmoil as lockdown restrictions continue to ease
As the UK’s lockdown restrictions continue to ease in some parts of the country, whilst in others restrictions return to quell outbreaks of Covid-19, the craft beer industry is navigating a sea of unpredictability. With some employers across the industry forced to furlough key members of staff to save on wages, other workers were left to fill in the gaps, Imbibe reported on August 28.

Now, some five months after lockdown began, those who worked throughout the shutdown – in many cases shifting to new roles and taking on more work – are feeling the exhaustion. Since the on-trade has reopened, albeit in a reduced capacity, there’s little sign of any respite.

London’s Brick Brewery closed for three weeks as lockdown began, before operating with a skeleton crew, as sales on the newly-implemented online store soared. With an asthmatic child, founders Ian and Sally Stewart had to balance the anxiety of keeping the family safe, home-schooling, and running the business – whilst Ian picked, packed, and delivered local orders.

'It was incredibly full on,' says Sally, 'and felt a bit like going back to the beginning but it was incredible how quickly we adapted.' Now, with all bar three employees back at ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Wisynco Group to distribute AB InBev’s Budweiser and other foreign brands in Jamaica
Manufacturing and distribution company Wisynco Group Limited will be taking a shot at Jamaica’s beer market as distributor of Budweiser and other foreign brands owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Jamaica Gleaner reported on September 4.

This comes as a fourth-quarter dip in revenues put a damper on the beverage and distribution company’s annual numbers.

Wisynco Group Chairman William Mahfood says they have a deal with Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV to exclusively distribute Budweiser, Corona, Becks and Stella Artois beer brands in Jamaica.

“We will start distributing their products in Jamaica in the next few weeks,” Mahfood told the Financial Gleaner.

Some of the InBev beers are already sold in Jamaica, but the identity of the distributors were not ascertained. Brands such as Budweiser, Stella Artois, Blue Moon and Becks have mostly occupied the premium segment of the market.

AB InBev is the largest brewing company in the world owned by Brazilian and European interests, with a global functional management office in New York City, and regional headquarters in São Paulo, London, St Louis, Mexico City, Bremen, Johannesburg and other cities. It has approximately 630 beer brands that are distributed in 150 countries.

The Jamaican beer market is dominated by sole beer maker Red Stripe Jamaica, which markets ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken switches to 100% green energy for brewing in the Netherlands
Heineken has switched to 100% green energy since July of this year for brewing beer sold in the Dutch market, the company has announced.

This is a major step for Heineken given that it has pledged to go climate neutral by 2030.

Hans Böhm, managing director Heineken Netherlands, commented, “I am proud to say that since last month we have been brewing our Heineken for Dutch consumers using 100% green energy.

“This applies to all product and packaging variants covered by the Heineken brand in the Dutch market, including Heineken 0.0."

Since 2010, Heineken has been working on its ‘Brewing a Better World’ initiative and has implemented several measures to reduce CO2 emissions in its breweries.

The company has installed wind turbines and solar panels to generate green energy.

In 2018, it initiated the production of biogas to supplement its energy requirements.

Biogas is produced from the wastewater of the breweries in Zoeterwoude and Den Bosch and supplemented with biogas from waste purification at the water board.

Böhm added, “We consider green energy to be an indispensable new ingredient in our Heineken beer. Wind and sun are just as important as hops, water and yeast.

"The use of sustainable energy literally makes Heineken even greener. The next step is ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & China: CBH barley ban to stop potential exports to China free trade zones
China's latest blow to Australia's barley exporters, a suspension of Western Australian grain exporter CBH due to alleged phytosanitary breaches has been dismissed in some corners as mere symbolism due to the hefty tariffs already in place, The Australian Dairyfarmer reported on September 4.

However, CBH chief marketing and trading manager Jason Craig acknowledged it would mean the company would not have the chance to explore options in exporting to China's free trade zones (FTZs).

China has 18 free trade zones spread around the country where goods can be imported without duties.

This means the 80 per cent duty currently excised on imports from Australia is not applicable.

If the goods end up in the rest of the country then the relevant duties must be paid but the product can be processed and then exported without charge.

China is a major exporter of malt and malted barley to its neighbours throughout Asia.

This means Australian barley exporters have been looking at opportunities within the FTZ space.

Estimates of total tonnages that could head to China this way vary but some have totals up to 250,000 tonnes possible.

While this is but a fraction of the 5.9 million tonnes China bought from Australia in 2016-17 it would still be ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & China: CBH Grain challenges Chinese barley import ban
A major Australian barley exporter barred from China in the latest trade dispute to hit bilateral relations said on September 2 the Chinese are only now acting on grain shipments dating back to 2019, The New York Times reported.

China on September 1 suspended barley imports from CBH Grain Pty. Ltd., Australia’s largest grain-exporting company, saying the grain was contaminated.

Chinese authorities have told Australia “to improve its plant export quarantine supervision system,” the customs agency said.

But the delay in China's response to a sanitary issue adds weight to suspicions that CBH has become collateral damage in a political dispute over Australia's call for an independent inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic.

CBH chief marketing and trading officer Jason Craig said on September 2 the Chinese ban was over weed seeds in barley shipments to China dating back to December last year.

Suspect barley shipments have since been retested and were within tolerance limits agreed between China and Australia for the seeds, Craig said.

“This is not about a financial impact. It is basically a reputation impact,” Craig said of the ban.

The ban has little practical effect because China shut its doors to Australian barley with a tariff wall in May after Australia angered China with ...More info on site

Hops news USA: 2020 hop crop to be the largest in decades
Growing conditions in the US were favourable overall this year and the US predicts a hop crop of 53,175 tonnes, the larges in decades, the Barth-Haas Group said on August 29.

Citra© in particular, but also Mosaic©, continue to expand significantly adding more than 1,600 ha between them. This comes at the expense of less fashionable aroma varieties such as Cascade, Chinook, and Centennial.

Interestingly, the high alpha acreage has declined again in 2020 after making a bit of a comeback in 2018 and 2019, as returns on aromas are simpl the more attractive option for US growers.

Overall, the US added 1,064 ha, a plus of 4.6% versus 2019.

Hops news World: John I. Haas, Inc. releases new hop variety Talus™
John I. Haas, Inc. has announced the commercial release of the new proprietary hop Talus™ brand HBC 692 c.v. Talus delivers big aromas of pink grapefruit, citrus rinds, dried roses, pine resin, tropical fruits and sage.

Talus’ impactful citrus, floral, wood and fruit aromas remain throughout the brewing process. “Its bold aroma translates to strong brewing performance, with a versatility that lends itself to many beer styles, particularly hop-forward beers,” said Virgil McDonald, Brewmaster at HAAS® Innovation Brewery.

Steve Gonzalez, Senior Manager of Brewing and Innovation at Stone Brewing, recently said, “Talus (HBC 692) has been one of our new favorite varieties for some time. There's nothing else quite like it with bright, fresh, juicy tangerine peel, oak barrel aroma, and dankness. We like it on its own, but it really shines as a blending hop in IPA and for its aroma in fruited IPAs.”

Talus’ bold flavor profile draws from its roots as a cultivated daughter of Sabro® brand HBC 438 c.v. By pairing its neomexicanus heritage with a local Pacific Northwest hop, this exciting new hop delivers a one-of-a-kind flavor experience. This latest creation from The Hop Breeding Company (HBC) represents a continuation of HBC’s exploration of novel genetics with the ...More info on site

Whisky news USA: Beam Suntory expects better sales in second half of 2020
Beam Suntory, maker of Jim Beam bourbon and Courvoisier cognac, expects sales in the second half of this year to be better than in the first, when pandemic lockdowns curbed drinking around the world, its chief executive told Reuters.

Beam is hoping sales will be “flat, if not slightly positive in the second half potentially,” Albert Baladi said, while cautioning “it’s early days and it’s a very, very volatile environment.”

The company, a unit of Japan’s Suntory Holdings, posted a 3% sales decline in the first half. Baladi said July sales were up by a high single-digit rate, with gradual improvements in various parts of the world.

Baladi’s comments followed a company announcement that it had acquired On The Rocks, a U.S. brand of ready-made cocktails, and results from rivals Brown-Forman and Pernod Ricard on September 2.
