Brewery news Mexico: Beer production forecast to drop by 16.5% this year
Mexico has become an important player in the beer sector, sales in 2019 were 124.5 mln hl, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their September report.

In 2019/20 Mexican imports of malting barley reached a record of 320,000 tonnes, the largest volume from the USA, but also from the EU and Argentina. Malt purchases in 2019 included 385 thousand tonnes from the USA, 88.5 thousand from Canada, and 74.5 thousand from the EU.

Beer production was only halted partly from April 5 till early June. Constellation Brands continued to brew, AB InBev and Heineken did not, the national production fell to 40%. During the first quarter, the national production was still 31 mln hl, plus 7%, but the forecast for the year is 104 mln hl, a drop of 16.5%.

Barley news Canada: Barley malt exports down, barley shipments remain stable in 2019-20
For 2019-20, Canada exported 3.0 million tonnes of barley, including exports of barley malt and barley grain, which is slightly lower than the year-earlier level, as reported by STC. Exports of barley malt fell by 8% to 0.7 mln tonnes while exports of barley grain remained stable at 2.3 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its September report.

Total domestic barley use increased by 28% from the prior year to 7.3 mln tonnes, largely due to a sharp rise in feed use.

Carry-out stocks rose by 11% from the historical low level in 2018-19 to about 1.0 mln tonnes, the second lowest level on record.

For 2020-21, Canadian barley production is estimated by STC to decrease by 1% from 2019-20 to 10.3 mln tonnes, as the slightly higher area harvested is expected to be more-than offset by lower average yields. The drop in production is mainly caused by a lower barley production estimate for Saskatchewan, the second leading barley grower in Canada, as the average yield for this province is estimated to fall by 9%, along with a reduction of 2% in area harvested. If materialized, the production number for this province is still 15% above the previous five-year average.

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors makes major investment in Milwaukee brewery due to skyrocketing demand for its LightSky low-carb beer
Skyrocketing demand for LightSky, the first low-calorie, low-carb beer from Blue Moon Brewing Co., has led Molson Coors Beverage Co. to make a major investment at its State Street brewery on Milwaukee’s West Side, the Milwaukee Magazine reported on September 23.

Molson Coors, which owns the Blue Moon business, is investing more than $20 million in its brewing and packaging operations to support the production of the citrus wheat brew launched earlier this year.

The investment in the Milwaukee brewery includes the installation of a new filler that can handle 1,700 cans per minute. The equipment can fill the slim white, blue and orange 12-ounce cans, as well as the industry standard 12-ounce cans. New equipment also been put in place to package the cans into six-packs and 12-packs.

Molson Coors already has been producing LightSky in 16-ounce cans at the State Street brewery and, on a smaller scale, at the company’s facility on North 10th Street in Milwaukee, near Downtown.

Blue Moon introduced LightSky in February and its immediate popularity among consumers has made it the best-selling new craft brand released this year, according to data tracked by Nielsen, the global research firm.

LightSky joins Vizzy hard seltzer as a pair of highly ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Cartridge Brewing slated to open in Maineville this fall
A long-abandoned and well-known historic Maineville factory will once again operate — but not in an industrial sense, the Cincinnati CityBeat reported on September 24.

A portion of the Peters Cartridge Factory, aka “The Powder Factory” to locals, is being transformed into a brewery and restaurant called Cartridge Brewing, slated to open this fall.

The space, located along the Little Miami Bike Trail and Little Miami River, is part of a larger redevelopment operation by Bloomfield Schon, which will eventually renovate the former factory to offer 15,000 square feet of commercial space and 130 market-rate apartments, according to their website.

A portion of that commercial space will soon be home to the area’s first brewery.

The rich history of the factory dates back to the late 1800s (more on that in a little bit), and while brewery owner Kyle Hackbarth’s dream to open a beer-based business doesn’t stem back quite that far, it is at least a couple decades in the making.

The hop seed was planted when Hackbarth and his now-wife Lindsey (brand experience director of the brewery) met in college at Purdue University and realized they both shared a love of craft beer. They dreamed of eventually opening their own ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Luce Line Brewing Co. expected to open in about a month
Residents of Plymouth waiting for the city’s first public brewery and taproom won’t have to wait much longer. The business partners behind Luce Line Brewing Co. expect to open in a about a month, ccxmedia.org reported on September 24.

“We’ve created a brewery really because our friend and neighbors asked us to do so,” said Tim Naumann, a Plymouth resident and one of two business partners pushing the project forward.

No exact opening date has been set yet. The Plymouth City Council approved a taproom on-sale license and brewer off-sale liquor license for the business Tuesday night. The city council approved zoning and plans for the brewery in June.

Like the name suggests, the brewery and taproom will be located off the Luce Line Regional Trail in the southeast part of the city. The precise location is 12901 16th Avenue North, which is in an industrial area west of Highway 55 and east of Xenium Lane, north of the bike trail.

The location will also include a bicycle shop business in addition to the brewery and taproom. The owners expect to lease part of their space to Trailhead Cycling, a bicycle shop currently located in Champlin.

Naumann is working with a brewmaster to develop the ...More info on site

Speaking with New School Beer, Burke says that he will open LandForm Beer in McMinnville this fall, and that his new brewery should have beer in cans as soon as November.

Von Ebert Pearl District brewer Sam Pecoraro has been promoted to the brand’s head brewer, overseeing the brewing operations at both the Pearl and Glendoveer locations.

Brewery news USA, TX: Pabst Brewing moving headquarters to downtown San Antonio
Pabst Brewing Co., the brewery behind brands like Lone Star and Pearl Beer, is moving into the Rand Building in downtown San Antonio, KSAT San Antonio reported on September 24.

Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation president and CEO, confirmed on September 21 that Pabst will move into the building at 110 E. Houston St., saying the move to San Antonio “sends a strong message that our region offers what HQs need to thrive as we continue to target California companies to relocate and expand.”

Attempts to reach Pabst Brewing for comment were not returned by time of publication.

Pabst moved into the Weston Urban-owned building from California in 2019 to establish a regional office.

Brewery news India: Young Indians now more willing to try low or no alcohol beer, research says
Young Indians are willing to try low or no alcohol beer as concerns around health sway their decision to pick alternatives to strong beer that still continues to dominate sale of the alcohol beverage category in India, Livemint reported on September 24.

To be sure, the market for such beers, that is, low or non-alcoholic beers, in India is still minuscule as over 85% of beer sold in India is strong—with an alcohol content of 6% to 8%. While several large beer companies, including United Breweries Ltd and Anheuser-Busch InBev, have introduced non-alcoholic variants to promote moderation in alcohol consumption, bring more younger drinkers into the fold and appeal to those watching their weight, the market is still in a nascent stage.

Mintel surveyed 1,655 Indian internet users aged over 25 years who have consumed beer in the past six months. In its report, over 40% of the respondents within the age group of 25-34 said they are interested in switching from standard-strength beer to low or no alcohol variants of the drink.

Health is a top barrier for beer consumption, with nearly 50% of those surveyed citing this as a key reason they avoid the drink. Others also said they refrain from ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Fruity-taste beers gaining ground in South Korea’s market
Beers with a fruity taste are gaining ground in South Korea’s alcoholic beverages market, which has been dominated by domestic pale lagers such as Cass and Hite, as more people opt for light drinking with variations in taste, according to the industry, The Korea Herald reported on September 22.

Convenience store chain CU said its sales of beers known for fruity notes, including Kronenbourg 1664, between January and August rose 9 percent compared with the same time last year. General beer sales also went up by 14.2 percent over the same period.

Against this backdrop, HiteJinro is set to release the new lemon-flavored FiLite Radler early next month. Labeled by the liquor maker as “Happoshu,” also known as low-malt beer, it is set to begin production this week.

In June, Oriental Brewery released Hoegaarden Green Grape -- a grape-inspired beer with 3.5 percent alcohol by volume, which is lower than the original white ale, which has 4.9 percent.

There has been a generational shift in drinking culture too.

“The fruit soju boom a few years ago was partly in response to the growing appetite for low-alcohol drinks as women and young people in general wanted something to drink more lightly and with ease. That led ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Diageo raises new capital via euro and sterling bond issue

The issuer of the euro bonds is Diageo Capital B.V. and the issuer of the Sterling bonds is Diageo Finance plc, with payment of principal and interest fully guaranteed by Diageo plc.

The issue consists of €700 million bonds due September 2028 with a coupon of 0.125%, and £400 million bonds due March 2033 with a coupon of 1.250%. Brewery news Brazil: Ambev opens can factory to cater to increasing stay-at-home demand
Brazil beermaker Ambev SA on September 23 said it had opened a new factory with capacity to produce 1.5 billion cans a year due to higher demand from stay-at-home drinkers, as the pandemic has hampered demand at bars, Reuters reported.

The company, a subsidiary of beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev , said demand for canned beverages has grown exponentially during the pandemic, outpacing demand for small-sized glass bottles.

This is Ambev’s first can factory and is located in the state of Minas Gerais. The plant had been announced last year but the company said it had accelerated its construction once the pandemic hit and beer consumption habits drastically changed.

Before the pandemic, Ambev said, Brazilians used to drink more large glass beer bottles, which are mostly purchased at bars and are meant to be shared.

Brazil has one of the world’s worst coronavirus outbreaks.
