Canada, BC: Alberni Brewing Company to become Port Alberni’s third brewery
|
A third brewery is on the horizon in Port Alberni, the Alberni Valley News reported on September 26.
Alberni Brewing Company has been renovating the former Color Your World Building on Adelaide Street near Johnston Road since July. The building, once finished, will be a microbrewery with a lounge area and commercial kitchen.
The brewery has already received a vote of support from Port Alberni city council.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the support from the city,” said Heather Welsh, one of the co-owners of Alberni Brewing Company. “We’re rejuvenating the building, inside and outside. We’ve been listening to what the city and the community would like to see, which is rejuvenation of existing buildings.”
Welsh, who will run the front-of-house operations, is originally from Wales, but her husband Jason was born and raised in Port Alberni. Jason will be Alberni Brewing Company’s head brewer.
“He’s got vast experience in regards to brewing,” said Welsh. “Both in a professional setting, and as an enthusiastic home brewer,” she added with a laugh.
The brewery plans to serve a selection of session and seasonal beers, with a focus on hop-forward and hazy IPAs, alongside pilsner-style international lagers. The company will be both kegging and canning on site. There will

USA, MO: Last Flight Brewing Company on tap to open later this year
|
A new brewery is on tap to open later this year in Jefferson City, and the cousins operating it believe it will provide another family-friendly option to the community, the Jefferson City News Tribune reported on September 27.
Jared and Mark Cowley hope to open Last Flight Brewing Company at 732 Heisinger Road in mid-November.
Last Flight Brewing Company will have 12 beers on tap — including lagers, IPAs, porters and stouts — but those beers will alternate as the cousins experiment with more brews.
"We're going to pretty much make everything except for your typical light beer," Jared said.
The Cowleys said they currently have about 40 beers they have brewed that have been well-received.
If enough customers ask for a certain beer, the Cowleys said, they will try to recreate it.
"One of my wife's favorite beers is Schnickelfritz, and Jared said we could brew something like that," Mark said. "Of course it's not exactly like that, but it's a variation of a beer that she likes. So that's an example of, if enough people request a certain type of beer, we'll try it out."

USA, OH: Old Capitol Brewing to become one of the first breweries in downtown Chillicothe
|
What started as a pair of friends brewing beer in a garage a few Saturdays a month has turned into what will become one of the first breweries in downtown Chillicothe, the Chillicothe Gazette reported on September 27.
Chillicothe natives Seth Blewitt and Justin Park became friends in early middle school over their bond of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. When Blewitt returned to town in 2017, he and Park once again connected — this time, over beer. Although it started as a shared hobby, the two later partnered to open a new business called Old Capitol Brewing.
"Once I started brewing beers, it wasn't long before I invited him over to see the process. Before we knew it, we were both really getting into recipe developments," Blewitt said. "After about five or so brews, we were sitting on the couch in my basement after a brew day when I turned to him and asked if he wanted to do it for real."
Blewitt first entered the world of at home brewing when he was in college. His friend had purchased a brewing kit and Blewitt was instantly hooked. Sometime later, Blewitt picked it up again while living in New Hampshire.

USA, TX: Couple aims at making Slackers Brewing Co. Anderson Mill’s first brewery
|
When Derek and Haley Law began initial designs on their upcoming brewery, they went in knowing they wanted the space to be as welcoming to the community as possible, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on September 29.
To meet that end, Haley said she told the architect the couple hired to design the space with clean, open lines of sight throughout the taproom of Slackers Brewing Co. so that parents can keep an eye on their children at all times.
When the Laws open Slackers Brewing Co. next year, the couple—with two children of their own—said they hope to create an environment for everybody in the surrounding neighborhoods to come in and enjoy the space.
“This place very much is going to be a family-friendly and community-driven center,” Derek told Community Impact Newspaper.
As it stands, the Laws are aiming to open the brewery at 12233 N. RM 620, Ste. 204, Austin—the first brewery in Anderson Mill—sometime in spring 2021.
For Derek, the future opening of the family-run brewery comes after a decade of home brewing experience. The brewer said he made his first batch of craft beer in 2011 and has set his sights on opening a brewery of his own ever since.

USA, NY: Moriches Field Brewing Co. to open its doors on October 15
|
Richard Flynn chuckles as drivers slow down to take in what he’s got brewing, GreaterMoriches reported on September 28.
“The last month there’s been non-stop people showing up here,” said Flynn, owner of the soon-to-open Moriches Field Brewing Co. He said he receives countless calls from people asking if he is open yet.
He can finally answer “yes” when the microbrewery, located at 1 Wilcox Ave. in Center Moriches, opens its doors on Oct. 15 after three years of planning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Flynn decided to open the brewery a after 20-year stint with the insurance giant American International Group.
“It was time for a change in career and this was a passion of mine,” Flynn, 52, of Bayport, said. “I’ve always been interested in the history of beer and brewing.”
Flynn bought the hangar-like property three years ago and is leaning into its aesthetic as opening day draws near. He is decorating the tasting room with propellers and other aviation artifacts he said were donated to him by friends and people in the area.
With social-distancing guidelines still in effect, the tasting room’s bar will only seat a few people. Large barrels will be spaced out across the room for temporary seating.

USA, MI: Saugatuck Brewing Company’s acquisition of Gonzo’s Biggdogg Brewing gets approval
|
The Michigan Liquor Control Commission and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau signed off on the acquisition of Gonzo’s Biggdogg Brewing by Saugatuck Brewing Company, WWMT-TV reported on September 28.
Saugatuck Brewing, from Douglas, Michigan, announced in March 2019 that they planned to acquire Biggdogg Brewing. The tap room in Kalamazoo will have Saugatuck Brewing beers on tap and have planned a “Mega Final Grand Reopening Celebration Weekend” starting Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.
“We could not be more excited and honored to finally be an official part of Kalamazoo,” Saugatuck Brewing Company President and CEO Ric Gillette said.
Saugatuck Brewing said the tap room would be closed Sept. 28 through Sept. 30 to prepare for the reopening celebration weekend. Doors would be opened noon Oct. 1 as Saugatuck Brewing Company Kalamazoo.
“I am most thankful for the staff at Saugatuck Brewing Company Kalamazoo,” Gillette said. “They have really stuck with us through the thick and thin. There have been some tough times waiting this out and they have all been in great spirits throughout.”
The brewing company will be honoring Emotional Wellness Month by making donations to Gryphon Place of Kalamazoo.

USA, NJ: Lions Roar Brewing Co. hoping to open this fall despite a setback in funding
|
Lions Roar Brewing Co. is hoping to open this fall in Westfield, despite a setback in funding, TAPinto.net reported on September 28.
Corrine Grant, who owns the brewery with her husband, Tim, said she received a “crushing” phone call recently during which the caller informed her that crowdfunding websites such as GoFundMe, which Lions Roar hoped to use, could not be used to fill a $30,000 shortfall to fund final expenses for the brewery.
The state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control prohibits the use of online crowdfunding for businesses supported by liquor licenses, according to a 2019 advisory notice, which states that the ABC must review the source of all funding for such businesses to protect against “the infiltration of the alcoholic beverage industry by persons with known criminal records, habits or associations.”
“It was a setback for sure,” Grant said. “I wish we were aware of it.”
Grant said she was “in between a rock and hard place,” as startups weren’t eligible for any state or local aid for small businesses, and the expenses seemed to keep mounting. But with guidance from the community, Grant said she is optimistic the brewery can open soon.

A longtime brewing company is looking to open its first brick and mortar location in Bellport next month, Patch.com reported on September 28.
After 7 years of owning the Bellport Brewing Company, Moriches resident Brian Baker will finally be opening the physical brewery on 14 Station Road sometime in October.

Australia: Largest breweries push for excise tax cut
|
Australians could soon be enjoying cheaper beer, as Australia's largest breweries push the government to cut excise tax to reduce prices and provide a lifeline to struggling pubs and clubs, the Daily Mail reported on September 29.
Coopers, Lion and Carlton & United Breweries combined to make the call, saying booze must be made more affordable to entice badly-needed customers back to bars after many months of heavily reduced trade due to coronavirus lockdowns.
The breweries estimate 85 per cent of the country's beer stock is made in Australia.
Currently breweries are taxed A$2.23 per litre of alcohol at the manufacturing point, which is passed on to consumers.
Peter Filipovic, chair of Brewers Association of Australia, said a cut would help breweries' biggest customer - the hospitality industry.
'We need to make a beer at the pub more affordable. It is as simple as that,' Mr Filipovic said.
'The tax on beer has gone up twice annually for the past 35 years forcing Australians to pay the fourth highest beer tax in the industrialised world.

UK: Independent craft brewers at ‘breaking point’ amid plummeting sales and incoming tax hikes
|
Independent craft brewers are at “breaking point” amid plummeting sales and incoming tax hikes, UK’s Society of Independent Brewers has warned.
Craft beer sales over July stood at just 51% of what brands would have expected in a “normal year” – even despite the reopening of pubs and bars, according to a survey of craft brewers by the trade body released on September 28.
Production slumped, too: 68% of brewers said they remained trading but brewed fewer times. Eleven per cent temporarily closed their breweries but have since reopened, 8% remained the same throughout and 6% remained trading but didn’t brew.
Only 35% of staff were back full-time after furlough, the survey revealed, with 30% back part-time.
Overall, 64% of brewers said they expected coronavirus “to have a strong negative impact on their business throughout 2020-2021”, with 27% expecting a “moderate negative impact”, 4% expecting a neutral impact and just 2% a moderate positive impact.
It comes as the government is poised to slash Small Brewer’s Relief, the progressive tax system which was introduced to offset small beer brands’ high ingredient costs, allowing them to compete with bigger brands in the market.

India: AB InBev and Indian Hotels Company open their first microbrewery in Bengaluru
|
Anheuser Busch InBev (Ab InBev) and Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) opened their first microbrewery, 7Rivers Brewing Co, at Taj MG Road, Bengaluru, on September 25, Moneycontrol.com reported.
The microbrewery opens almost a year after Tata-owned IHCL announced the deal, on October 4, 2019, to open 15 microbreweries over the next five years.
"The brewpub, spread across 2700 sqft, will offer beer inspired by the quintessential flavours of the region, as well as those made from the finest locally sourced ingredients and crafted by experienced international and Indian brewmasters," IHCL said.
Kartikeya Sharma, President- South Asia, AB InBev, said, "We are thrilled to unveil our first 7Rivers microbrewery through our exclusive partnership with IHCL, in the beer capital of India. We are constantly exploring avenues to offer the best beer experience to delight our consumers, as we see a growing trend towards artisanal beers in the country."
Among the world's top brewers, AB InBev sells beers including Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois and Hoegaarden.

Japan: Taxes for regular beer to decrease, those for third-segment drinks to rise as from October
|
Changes to Japan’s tax system from October spells bad news for drinkers in Japan, as tax rates and, therefore, prices, will be hiked for some alcoholic drinks, Nippon.com reported on September 29.
Prices will also be raised for some tobacco products.
Taxes for so-called third-segment quasi-beer are slated to rise 9.8 yen per 350 ml, while those for fruit-based alcohol, such as wine, are slated to rise 3.5 yen for the same volume.
Sales of third-segment beer-like beverages, which are cheaper than regular beer, had been on the rise since the consumption tax rate hike last October led people to cut back on spending. A spike in consumption of food and drinks at home amid the novel coronavirus epidemic has also contributed to the boom.
On the other hand, taxes for regular beer will be lowered by 7 yen per 350 ml, while those for sake will be reduced by 3.5 yen for the same amount.

Ukraine: Ukraine to cut winter wheat, barley area this year
|
Ukraine, hit by the severe drought, plans to cut its area under winter wheat to 6.1 million hectares from around 6.7 million a year earlier, the economy ministry said on September 29.
The ministry's data showed farms had sown around 25% of the expected area as of Sept. 28 or 1.5 million hectares.
The ministry gave no comparison.
The ministry also said farms had sown 61,200 hectares of winter barley or 6% of the expected sowing area of 946,300 hectares.
Farms sowed 1.06 million hectares of winter barley for the 2020 harvest.
Weather forecasters this month called the weather conditions the worst in 10 years and said only 10% to 15% of Ukraine's arable land was suitable for sowing winter crops for the 2021 harvest due to a severe drought.
Ukraine traditionally begin winter grain sowing in early September, but this year farmers have started the sowing few weeks later.
Ukraine controls about 16% of global grain exports and sold 57.2 million tonnes of grain abroad in the 2019/20 season. The government has said exports could decline to 47.4 million tonnes in 2020/21.

The Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) is continuing to engage closely with Indian brewers and maltsters to pave the way for Australian malting barley to enter the Indian market, the Grain Central reported on September 28.
More than 30 members of the Indian brewing and malting industry took part in an online seminar last week, hosted by AEGIC and Austrade, communicating the quality, safety and reliability of Australian malting barley.
AEGIC barley markets manager Mary Raynes said the seminar was a collaborative effort, with participation from AEGIC, Barley Australia, Grain Trade Australia, Grains Industry Market Access Forum and the Australian Government.
“By 2030, the size of the Indian malting barley market is likely to be between 450,000 tonnes and 650,000 tonnes,” she said.
“The Australian barley industry is working together to ensure Australia is well-placed to capture a strong share of this market.”
India has not been a malting barley market option for Australia for 10 years due to a technical phytosanitary restriction.
The Australian grains industry is working together with the Australian Government and Indian Government to work through technical issues and allow market access.

UK: Grolsch beer returning to UK on-trade this autumn

Grolsch will return to the UK on-trade this autumn with a new visual identity, Bar Magazine reported on September 28.
The lager was acquired by Asahi UK from AB InBev (now Budweiser Brewing Group) in 2016. Under the new name Grolsch Premium Pilsner, it will now be brewed in its homeland of Enchede, The Netherlands, instead of in the UK, at a lower ABV of 4%.
The brand’s comeback will be marked by a multi-million-pound marketing campaign and new look, which “heroes the brand’s 400-year heritage and authentic Dutch provenance”.
The Grolsch logotype has been carefully redrawn to capture the character and craftsmanship of the brand’s original hand-painted signs, returned to its heritage red and placed within a clean white disc. The pilsner’s iconic swing-top will also return to the packaged format.
A new suite of assets have been specially designed for the on-trade, including bespoke glassware, found, barware, tap badges and handles, to deliver a “stand-out premium look for the bar and memorable experience for beer lovers”.
