Brewery news USA: Molson Coors breaks ground on upgrade of its Golden, Colorado plant
Molson Coors Beverage Co. broke ground on an upgrade of its 147-year-old Golden, Colorado plant on Tuesday, October 6 that company leaders say will pump “hundreds of millions” of dollars into the facility and prepare it to make better beer and more types of products, the Denver Business Journal reported.

Company CEO Gavin Hattersley alluded to the investment in October, when he announced that the company was moving its headquarters from Denver to Chicago — a process that continues to be ongoing, slowed by coronavirus. This week’s action not only marked the kick-off of fulfilling that promise but provided details to what exactly the worldwide alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage company plans for the country’s largest single-site brewing facility.

The upgrades will replace the brewery’s fermenting, aging, filtration and cellaring systems, most of which are between 50 and 70 years old, said Peter Coors, director of G150 commissions and operations — an acronym for the Golden plant, which turns 150 years old in 2023. Coors is the son of former Molson Coors chairman Pete Coors and a fifth-generation family member piloting the Coors brewery.

The result of such massive investments will be a 25% reduction in beer waste and a reduction in water and ...More info on site

Hops news USA: Pacific Northwest hop acreage once again hits record high
The US hop acreage strung in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho, and Oregon) once again hit a record high. The region saw a 5% acre increase (+2,630 acres) compared to the 2019 crop, coming in at 59,174 acres for 2020, Hopsteiner said in their latest report.

With the 5% acreage increase, production for the 2020 harvest was on pace to exceed 117-million pounds; however, adverse weather conditions this year will likely impact production yields. With some varieties still being harvested, more accurate expectations will likely approximate to 110 million pounds.

All three Pacific Northwest States (WA, ID, & OR) saw acreage increases. Washington State remains the largest growing region and accounts for 72% (42,343 acres) of total US acreage, followed by Idaho at 16% (9,374 acres), and Oregon at 12% (7,457 acres). The top five hop varieties strung for 2020 include Citra®, CTZ, Mosaic®, Simcoe®, and Cascade.

International markets continue to play an important role in the US hop market. Unlike the US, craft beer abroad is still maturing, but trends show favouritism toward alluring US craft beer styles. Domestically grown proprietary varieties are well received, paving way to healthy demand for US aroma/flavor hops and further influencing acreage expansion. Although, the ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand & USA: Thailand’s Boon Rawd Brewery to launch brewery in Miami
Thailand’s Boon Rawd Brewery Company Limited, which produces Singha and Leo beers, is bringing its first U.S. outpost of EST. 33 Thai Craft Brewery and Kitchen (701 South Miami Ave, Unit 412A) to Brickell, Miami this November. Located on the fourth floor of Brickell City Centre, the new outpost features an extensive covered outdoor patio, bar, restaurant, and brewery housed in the interior of the restaurant, Eater Miami reported on October 6.

EST. 33 is an homage to the original brewery by the company in Bangkok in 1933, and the menu will continue that legacy with a variety of items that mix Asian flavors with American barbecue. Think dishes like steamed buns filled with lemongrass chicken or Thai-spice rubbed beef brisket, beef jerky, shrimp pot stickers, Thai-spice crab cake croquetas, cauliflower with tamarind peanut jam, and more.

Of course, plenty of beers are also on the menu as the space will house seven fermation vessels in addition to seven serving tanks. Brews like the light and golden Legend Lager, the Vienna-style One and Only Kopper, the summer wheat Aromatic Snowy, and the namesake 33 Pale Ale will all be found on the menu.

The interior will feature an industrial design with tall ceilings, ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Idaho solidifies its spot as nation’s No. 1 barley producer
Idaho solidified its spot as the nation's No. 1 barley-producing state in 2020 despite early season estimates that total barley production in the Gem State would decrease this year.

USDA's Small Grains Summary for 2020, released Sept. 30, showed that Idaho farmers produced 33.3 percent of the nation's total barley supply this year. That's up from 31.9 percent of the total during 2019.

Montana ranked No. 2 in total barley production this year with 27.6 percent of the nation's supply and North Dakota was third at 17.5 percent.

Idaho overtook North Dakota as the nation's top barley producing state in 2011 and after falling back to No. 2 in 2012, regained the No. 1 spot in 2013 and has retained it every year since then.

Earlier this year, USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service had forecast that Idaho's total barley production would decline slightly this year but it actually increased because of record yields.

According to NASS's Small Grains Summary, Idaho farmers harvested 500,000 acres of barley this year, down from 520,000 acres during 2019.

But barley yields in Idaho averaged a record 110 bushels per acre this year, surpassing the previous record of 107 bushels per acre in 2016 and ahead of last year's average of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Hammer & Stitch Brewing to open in Portland on October 10
From the creative mind of brewer Ben Dobler, Hammer & Stitch Brewing opens in northwest Portland this Saturday, October 10th at 11am. Focusing on clean looks, and old school simplicity, Hammer & Stitch will deliver on classic clean lagers and ales for people that still appreciate more malt driven beers, newschoolbeer.com reported.

After 25 years at Widmer Brothers Brewing, and following those up with stints as the brewmaster for Laurelwood Brewing and Mt. Tabor Brewing, Ben Dobler knows a few things about crafting balanced recipes. H&S’s lead brewer Cameron Murphy worked with Dobler at Laurelwood, and went on to brew at Von Ebert Brewing. Along with marketing manager Madison Moody and kitchen partners Grand Cru Hospitality, they make up the small team that will run and operate the taproom and it’s elevated views and pub grub.

On opening, H&S will have five beers of their own brewed in-house. The brew crew opted not to take the collaboration route in brewing up beers at friends breweries in order to fill the taps. Instead these will be the first five beers out of the gate and make up the standard year-round lineup H&S would like to see become the mainstays.

The H&S brewing philosophy ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Red Bird Brewery gets approval for massive expansion project
Some exciting new plans are in store for the empty parking lot sitting beside Red Bird Brewery on Richter Street in Kelowna, the KelownaNow reported on October 6.

On October 5, Kelowna city council OK’d a development permit for a massive expansion and renovation proposed by the brewery.

Owners intend to expand the current building to a 100-person capacity indoor space complete with a full-service kitchen and on-site beer production facility.

With the remaining empty space beside the expanded building, plans call for a rooftop patio, turf bocce court, elevated music stage, dog run and 80 bicycle parking spaces.

While councillors unanimously approved the project, the brewery will have to return to City Hall at a later date to expand their liquor license.

There's no current timeline for when construction will be completed on the project.

Barley news Australia: Australian barley export prices reach three-year low in September
Export prices of Australian barley, which is used in animal fodder and beer production, reached a three-year low in September, after experiencing a sharp downturn this year due to plunging exports to China, the country's biggest market. Behind this is friction between Canberra and Beijing over the origin of the new coronavirus pandemic, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on October 3.

On Sept. 1, the General Administration of Customs of China announced a partial ban on imports of barley from Australia, a leading player in world barley export markets, citing the discovery of pests in shipments from grain growers' cooperative CBH. With the Australian exporter denying the charge, bilateral tensions between the two countries have inflamed.

Long before the announcement by the GACC, China in May slapped tariffs of more than 80% on barley imports from Australia, claiming the grain was priced unfairly low.

The prohibitive tariff caused exports from Australia to China to plummet to 1.09 million Australian dollars ($777,606) in June, down 99% from the previous month.

The effects of the recent import ban are expected to be meagre in the wake of the already steeply reduced shipments from Australia. But exports to China will "drop limitlessly close to zero this year," ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: AB InBev sets environmental and business sustainability as its goals in Vietnam
Anheuser-Busch InBev has set environmental and business sustainability as its goals in Vietnam, which it sees as Southeast Asia’s fastest growing beer market, VnExpress International reported on October 5.

Towards this, it is focusing on increased recycling and utilization of renewable energy while producing beer of international quality to serve the Vietnamese market, having developed a "deep understanding" of the local beer-drinking culture.

The company’s VSIP Brewery in Vietnam, established in 2005, is its first in Southeast Asia and one of 55 most advanced breweries producing the Budweiser brand worldwide.

The company says it is strongly committed to maintaining global quality standards and keeping intact the original beer. Towards this, brewery is invested with modern equipment, automation and the most advanced technology.

Brewery news UK: More than 290 thousand brewery and pub jobs could be lost without government support – BBPA report
A total of £7.4 bln and more than 290,000 jobs could be wiped out unless the UK Government regularly reviews the 10pm pub curfew rule and creates tailored financial support for pubs and brewers, FoodManufacture.co.uk reported. That's the conclusion of the results of a report published by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) with Oxford Economics published on October 2.

The UK Beer and Pub Sector: Coronavirus Scenarios Report models three scenarios on how the novel coronavirus pandemic could impact the sector. The models are based on different assumptions underpinned by data and insights from surveys of pub and brewing businesses.

According to the report, the increasingly likely scenario shows that more than 290,000 jobs will be lost, a third of the 900,000 jobs the pub and brewing sector currently supports.

In addition, of the 600,000 people directly employed in pubs, 43% are held by people under the age of 25, meaning they would be most affected by such a cut to employment opportunities in the sector.

If this situation were allowed to become reality, it would mean that the total economic output of the beer and pub ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: BGI Ethiopia launching non-alcoholic malt beverage SEN’Q
BGI Ethiopia is set to introduce a new product, SEN’Q. This is to be a nonalcoholic malt beverage from one of Ethiopia’s biggest breweries after it introduced a new dark brown beer, Doppel; earlier this summer to the local market, The Reporter Ethiopia said on October 3.

“Despite the difficulties that have come out of COVID-19, BGI is working tirelessly to strengthen the severely disrupted economy,” the company said announcing the new launch which is set to complement its St. George and Castel beer brands.

Castel, while it has shown a lukewarm success in the capital, is one of the bestselling beers in the region of Tigray, where beer is widely consumed.

While the local beer sector has been hit hard with a slew of challenges, including an increase in tax that was abruptly introduced earlier this year, ban on television advertisement and the COVID-19 pandemic, other companies have also launched new products this year.

Earlier this month, Habesha introduced Kidame beer in a direct competition to St. George, a light beer that contains 4.8 percent alcohol. In addition, the company is also set to launch a belated draft beer of its signature product, Habesha, this year, according to Afel Amberber, the Marketing Manager ...More info on site
