USA, PA: Hawaiian-themed Lanahu Ales to open next month in Mountain Top

A new Hawaiian-themed craft brewery called Lanahu Ales will open next month in Mountain Top in Luzerne County, fox56.com reported on November 3.
Lanahu Ales will feature hard seltzers, golden ales, lager and will also sell wine.
Guests will also receive a wristband and a RFID card that will be linked to a credit or debit card and pre-programmed for two pints of beer.
They also plan to offer pre-filled crowlers to go as well as growlers.
George Merenich/Owner: “We started brewing a few years ago in our basement in Ashley, actually built a small brewery down there, my wife and I had a lot of fun brewing down there and when I decided that it was time to retire I thought let's just try this, this might be it.”
Lanahu Ales will open up on November 11 - and run on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.

USA, NJ: King’s Road Brewing Company plans larger production facility in Burlington County
|
King’s Road Brewing Company has plans to expand into Burlington County, the Burlington County Times reported on November 2.
The Haddonfield brewery announced on November 1 plans to open a larger production facility in the former Kirby Brothers feed store in Medford Township.
The new location will allow for greater beer-making production, canning and distribution, said Bob Hochgertel, King’s Road Brewing Company co-owner and managing director. The second location will also feature a small tasting room.
The expansion comes just one year after the brewery moved from its original location at 127 Kings Highway East into a much larger space just a few doors away.
“The good news/bad news is that the new space provided more beer, but also much bigger crowds, so again we found ourselves struggling to have enough extra inventory for canning and distribution,” Hochgertel said. “Even with COVID, it was determined that we needed a larger production facility someplace else.”
According to Hochgertel, the Medford location “kind of fell in our laps.” But with a downtown location, and the opportunity to share space with Medford businesses Whole Hog Café, Wing it Forward and Harvest Coffee, who are also slated to move into the former Kirby Brothers

Canada, ON: Fine Balance Brewing announces release of its first two beers
|
The newest brewery in Eastern Ontario has announced the release of its first two beers, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 2.
Fine Balance Brewing is based in Kingston, and has entered the market with Oats & Cream (7.1.%), a hazy Northeast style IPA, and the self-explanatorily named Light Hazy Pale Ale (3% abv).
Both beers can currently be ordered online for local delivery and shipping across Ontario, and will also be available in the Fine Balance taproom and retail store which is set to open soon.
Fine Balance Brewing is located at 677 Innovation Drive, Unit 4 in Kingston.

USA, CA: Radiant Beer Co. to open its doors in Anaheim in December
|
A bright idea, that has been years in the making, will come to light this December, when Radiant Beer Co. opens its doors in Anaheim, Brewbound reported on November 1.
The new brewery will soft launch with beer on draft to enjoy at their expanded patio, and to-go in crowlers and in a limited supply of cans, before the close of 2020. Located at 1566 W. Lincoln Ave, the I-5 adjacent facility houses a production brewery, packaging hall, taproom, and outdoor patio, all in very close proximity to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, the historic Anaheim Colony and Packing House Districts, and Downtown Anaheim.
The team behind Radiant Beer Co. is stepping up to the challenge of opening a new business amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, and will take every precaution while welcoming guests to a safe soft launch in the coming weeks. For the past several months, they have been working on updating the brewery site, which formerly housed Towne Park Brewery, and are setting a fast pace for developing the new vision and space.

UK: Second lockdown will do little to boost breweries’ balance sheets
|
Appearing languid during the first half, the UK prime minister’s Halloween announcement of a second lockdown will do little to boost the balance sheets of breweries in the closing stages of 2020, the UK Investor Magazine reported on November 1.
Speaking on COVID challenges and the outlook for the beer industry, Mark Lynch, Partner at Oghma Partners, said:
“Results from Carlsberg, Heineken, AB InBev for the third quarter overall reflect the hiatus in the March of Covid-19 after the Q1 and Q2 hit of earlier in the year. As a result, the quarter saw generally positive volume evolution from the brewers albeit some margin impact as business switched from eat out and drink out destinations to lower margin retail business. The outlook remains mixed with a general concern about the resurgence of Covid-19 being reflected in the outlook and passed dividends (AB InBev).”
Reflecting the uncertainty facing breweries, even a summer spike in drinking activity in non-retail outlets couldn’t save Carlsberg revenues, down 2.1% during Q3 and falling over 8% during the year-to-date. Carlsberg’s CEO, Cees ’t Hart, said that, “The pandemic remains a concern for us, impacting our people, our customers and our businesses in many of our markets.”

World: AB InBev CEO dismisses speculation of imminent departure
|
AB InBev’s long-serving CEO Carlos Britos has dismissed speculation that he is stepping down soon and told Reuters that he expects to be leading the company for “some time to come”, FoodBev.com reported on October 30.
Last month, the Financial Times reported that AB InBev had started searching for a replacement for Brito as he planned to step down at some point next year. After serving in his position of CEO for nearly 16 years, the newspaper said that he was involved in the hiring process and would join the board following his departure.
Following a phone interview with the current CEO after AB InBev released its third-quarter results, Reuters reported that Brito said he expects to remain the head of the brewer for “many quarters” to come.
According to Reuters, Brito referred to the previous announcement as “a whole bunch of rumours” that the company had not confirmed.
He added: “The two of us are going to continue to talk about results for the next many quarters. So, don’t worry about that. You’re not going to get rid of me.”
Brito allegedly said that the company looked into “succession planning” every year and had stepped up its efforts in light of the pandemic.

The Netherlands: Heineken acquires Texelse Bierbrouwerij brewery
|
Beer brewer Heineken takes over its smaller peer, Texelse Bierbrouwerij. Both companies announced this on November 2. The Texel company employs eighty employees, all of whom will be transferred to the new owner, AlKhaleej Today reported.
The brewer of specialty beers such as Skuumkoppe was looking for a strategic partner in order to grow. Together with Heineken, Texelse Bierbrouwerij will work on better availability in the catering industry and growth of production.
Texelse Bierbrouwerij wanted to professionalize further, according to director Cor Honkoop. “We were already very well on track, we have had the best summer ever.” With Heineken as the new owner, the maker of thirteen types of beer will be able to take steps faster.
The Texel company remains autonomous under the Heineken flag. The beer giant also announced that the brewery will remain on Texel. Financial details have not been provided.
The brewery was founded twenty years ago and sells about 35,000 hectolitres of beer annually. The annual turnover in 2018 was around 11 million euros.

China & Australia: China bans shipments of Australian barley by Emerald Grain
|
The Chinese Government has banned shipments of Australian barley from Emerald Grain in a move which is expected to further impact importers in China and processors who have been exporting malt, the Grain Central reported on November 3.
Emerald is now the second Australian shipper to have its barley exports banned from entering China following the suspension of CBH Group barley sales in September.
China introduced a hefty tariff on Australian barley in May, and since then, only a few cargoes have been booked to China to supply barley to maltsters which sell malt into the export, rather than the domestic, market and have therefore been able to avoid the tariff.
Emerald Grain chief executive officer David Johnson said the company had shipped and discharged two cargoes of barley to China, one each in September and October, since the tariffs were introduced.
“We’ve got no more sales on to China, so it’s a bit of a moot point,” he said.
Mr Johnson said the second vessel finished discharging in China around two weeks ago, and a telephone call on Saturday from the Australian Department of Agriculture notified Emerald of China’s suspension.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania: Heineken appeals Sh1.79 billion compensation bill
|
Dutch beer maker Heineken has appealed a Sh1.79 billion compensation bill slapped on it for terminating a distributorship agreement with tycoon Ngugi Kiuna’s firm Maxam Ltd.
In the appeal pending before the Court of Appeal, Heineken East Africa Import Company Ltd and Heineken International B.V. said it was dissatisfied with the High Court’s decision issued in July last year.
The brewer has faulted Justice James Makau’s decision, arguing that the judge failed to consider the terms of the distributorship agreement.
Further, the alcohol maker said it was wrong for the judge to rule that Maxam Ltd had a legitimate expectation that the agreement would not be terminated.
“The learned judge erred by holding that the appellants constructively terminated the distribution agreement by appointing additional distributors despite injunctive orders,” the application reads.
Heineken maintained that the orders barring the appointment of additional distributors were not reinstated as ruled by the High Court. The firm further said Maxam did not prove any special damages and the orders issued affected third parties who were not involved in the case.

UK: Spring barley Diablo given full approval for brewing use
|
Spring barley variety Diablo has been given full approval for brewing use by the Malting Barley Committee, the Farmers Weekly reported on October 30.
The variety already had full approval for malt distilling, resulting in being the top-yielding spring barley variety with full approval for both uses on the current AHDB Recommended List.
“With this recent approval, Diablo now holds the title of being dual-use, demonstrating the robustness of its quality characteristics, as required by end users in both the brewing and malt distilling sectors,” says Matt Shand, UK national sales manager for Limagrain UK.
Diablo has a yield of 105% of the control and, significantly, its yields are highest in the key malting barley growing areas of the East (106%) and North (107%).
