USA: Large brewers beat market expectations in most recent quarters

Large brewers beat market expectations in their most recent quarters as they sold more drinks to homebound consumers amid the pandemic and found success with newer product categories, like hard seltzer, S&P Global reported on November 24.
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, Constellation Brands Inc., Boston Beer Co. Inc. and Molson Coors Beverage Co. all posted stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings and adapted their businesses in light of ongoing coronavirus restrictions and lockdowns that have closed down major points of sale like restaurants, bars and other hospitality venues. IWSR, an alcoholic beverage market data company, forecasts that the global wine and beer categories are both expected to be down 9% in 2020 and are unlikely to regain volumes for several years.
AB InBev's newer products, like the lager Brahma Duplo Malte in Brazil and Bud Light Seltzer in the U.S., helped boost its third-quarter results. Constellation's stronger business through grocery stores and other retail outlets helped offset a near-50% reduction in on-premise channels like restaurants in its fiscal second quarter. Boston Beer saw third-quarter growth with its Truly Hard Seltzer and Twisted Tea brands.

Canada: Barley crop forecast to decrease by 1% in 2020-21
|
For 2020-21, total barley production across Canada is estimated by Statistics Canada (STC) to decrease by 1% from 2019-20 to 10.3 million tonnes, on expectations for a slightly higher area harvested, despite estimates for lower average yields. If materialized, the production would be 17% above the previous five-year average.
Combined with higher carry-in stocks, Canadian barley supply is forecast at 11.3 mln tonnes, roughly the same level as last year.
Harvesting of barley in Western Canada has finished. The three Prairie provinces all reported good quality at provincial level in their final crop reports. The average provincial yield for barley in the top two barley producing provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, is reported at 4.00 t/hectare and 3.60 t/hectare, respectively, versus STC’s estimates of 3.96 t/hectare and 3.39 t/hectare for these two provinces, respectively.
Exports are expected to remain strong throughout the year against a backdrop of strong demand for animal feed from the international market. STC and the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) have reported a strong export pace since the start of the year.
Domestic use is expected to decline, mainly due to lower feed consumption in anticipation of a reduction in the backlog of livestock and good supplies of other feed grains.

USA, CA: Bullmastiff Brewing open for business in Penn Valley

Bullmastiff Brewing is open for business in Penn Valley, The Union of Grass Valley reported on November 21.
Owners Tina Harland and Dave Nelson, who named the brewery after their own two bullmastiffs, began the process of opening this business over two years ago. Harland said construction, started during last year’s power outages and finished this year amid the pandemic, brought its fair share of challenges, from delays to unavailable materials.
In the early summer, she said they really started to worry.
“We thought, ‘Can we do this?’ but our take was we can’t stop now,” said Harland. “We knew that we were up against an obstacle, but we also knew that as long as we adhere by COVID (guidelines), we can still open, we can still be successful, but we may have to approach it differently.”
She said a brewery was a good fit as counterpart to Nelson’s other Penn Valley business, Players Pizza, which she has helped run for the past five years.
“Pizza and beer go hand-in-hand,” she said, adding, however, that the motivation to open this business also came from Nelson’s independent interest in beer. “If you know Dave, you know he loves beer.”

USA, OH: Codex Brewing already open in North Canton

After working for several Northeast Ohio breweries, Jason Gasper-Hulvat has decided it's time he operated his own place, the Canton Repository reported on November 24.
So in the midst of a pandemic, he has opened Codex Brewing at 6305 Whipple Ave. NW. He described the experience as wild, crazy, challenging and frustrating.
And because of Ohio's recent spike on COVID 19 cases, Gasper-Hulvat isn't certain as to how long he'll be open before the pandemic and state officials say it's time for a temporary closing. He hopes that doesn't happen.
Codex will focus on beer. Gasper-Hulvat has a five-barrel Portland Kettle Works system, which realizes is small but, he said, is not the smallest being used in the area. That means beer is being brewed in smaller batches. But Gasper-Hulvat expects to be crafting a variety of beer and styles.
The current beer menu includes a couple of saisons, a New England India Pale Ale, a festbier, and several styles of ale. On the way are a Northeast Ohio-style Christmas ale and North Canton Hard Seltzer.

USA, NY: Heroes Brewing to open in former Lost Borough Brewing space in Rochester
|
Greg and Marlene Fagen are two of the most positive and selfless people you could ever come across. So it's no surprise that their brewery is an extension of that outlook, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on November 23.
Heroes Brewing opens in the coming weeks in the former Lost Borough Brewing space at 543 Atlantic Ave. in the city of Rochester's Beechwood neighborhood. It'll become the city's 12th brewery (and a 13th is slated to open in the coming months).
When Lost Borough closed earlier this year, Heroes, which is nearly five years in the making, was ready to fill that void. The Fagens, a married couple who reside in Fairport, said it was the perfect opportunity and the ideal home for their community-centered brewery model.
The brewery name, they said, is a reflection of this.
"We had come up with all sorts of different names. We were going to name the brewery after our dog. I said, ‘Marlene, what is it that anybody can be?’ She thought about it. I said, ‘Anyone can be a hero?’ I was a fireman at the time, so firemen and police and veterans, they’ve earned that.

USA, OR: Falling Sky Brewing pubs pass under new ownership

Eugene, Oregon’s popular Falling Sky Brewing pubs are now under new ownership. After 8 successful years in operation, original co-founders Jason Carriere and Rob Cohen are now out of the business that spawned three distinct brewpub locations and numerous award-winning beers, newschoolbeer.com reported on November 25.
Jason Carriere founded Eugene homebrew supply shop Valley Vintner & Brewer in 2002 and was one of the recipients of the Glen Hay Falconer brewing scholarship award in 2011. Carriere and Valley Vintner employees Michael Zarkesh and Scott Sieber jumped at the chance to open Falling Sky Brewing in 2012 after the warehouse space behind the homebrew shop became available.
“We did not have the starting capital to make this happen and secure business loans on our own,” Carriere told the New School in 2018. “I met Rob Cohen playing pickup basketball every week. He had some money from selling restaurants he had owned in Ithaca, NY. He was planning on opening a deli/market and had a location secured but it got sold out from under him. Vietnam: Sabeco to pay first cash dividend for 2020 FY in December
|
Sai Gon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) will pay its first cash dividend for the 2020 financial year on December 18, VietnamPlus reported on November 20.
The dividend rate is set at 20 percent, meaning shareholders will receive 2,000 VND (0.086 USD) per share.
The total dividend rate Sabeco set for 2020 is 35 percent. The list of beneficiary shareholders will be finalised on December 1.
With nearly 641.3 million shares, the value of the upcoming dividend is about 1.28 trillion VND (nearly 55 million USD).
The two biggest shareholders – the State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC) and Vietnam Beverage Co Ltd – will receive 461 billion VND and 687 billion VND, respectively.
SCIC recently received Sabeco shares from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, now owning 36 percent of the company.
Vietnam Beverage Co Ltd became the major shareholder at Sabeco in late 2017, possessing a 53.59 percent stake.
Sabeco has been hit by a stricter policy to prevent drunk driving and the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the third quarter of the year, Sabeco posted a 17 percent annual decline in net revenue, which fell to 8.05 trillion VND. But net profit was almost unchanged at 1.47 trillion VND.

Japan & South Korea: Japanese brewers striving to regain foothold in Korea through price cuts

After going through a complete collapse amid the ‘No Japan’ boycott campaign in South Korea, Japanese breweries are striving to regain a foothold through price cuts, The Korea Bizwire reported on November 24.
Lotte Mart, the hypermarket chain operated by Lotte Shopping, is now holding a promotional event selling four cans of Asahi beer that its affiliate Lotte Asahi Liquor Co. is importing and distributing for a price of 10,000 won (US$8.99).
Prior to the No Japan boycott campaign that led to a plunge in sales of Asahi beer, it ranked No. 1 in South Korea’s import beer market, with a 500-milliliter can being sold at a price of more than 3,000 won.
This promotional event came after Lotte Asahi Liquor reduced its supply price.
Convenience store chains such as 7-Eleven and CU are also selling some Japanese beer at a per-can price of 2,500 won.
In addition to Asahi beer, CU lowered the selling price of the Pilsner Urquell and Kozel brands that Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings recently acquired to 2,500 won. At some GS25 stores, Asahi beer is now being sold at a price of 2,500 won.
