Brewery news Canada, AB: Red Deer County’s Red Hart Brewing and Red Shed Malting to launch Craft Beer Commonwealth
Red Deer County’s newest brewery has been built from the ground up to be a truly local, collaborative showcase of the Central Alberta beer scene, Todayville.com reported on December 4.

A joint venture between Lacombe’s Blindman Brewing, Red Deer County’s Red Hart Brewing, and Penhold’s Red Shed Malting, Craft Beer Commonwealth will be opening in late December in the new Gasoline Alley Farmers’ Market. The ground-breaking partnership between farmers and brewers offers a true farm-to-glass experience for beer lovers who want to support Central Alberta’s agricultural roots.

Craft Beer Commonwealth lives up to its namesake with a focus on cooperation. It will not only feature beers made in its own facility in the year-round famers’ market, but there will be selections from every brewery in Central Alberta on rotation. In fact, Commonwealth’s first beer – Landlock Ale – is a joint effort between each and every Central Alberta brewery, using only ingredients grown within 10 kilometers of Red Deer!

“Local is sometimes a bit of a buzz word, but now more than ever it really means something,” says Daelyn Hamill of Red Shed Malting. “This beer is a cooperative effort between multiple local businesses. It supports the local economy, helps Alberta farmers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: Fertile Ground Beer Co. planning new craft brewery in Jackson
Fertile Ground Beer Co. is pleased to announce plans for a craft brewery to be located in the historic Belhaven neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi, Brewbound reported on December 6.

Scheduled to open in 2021, Fertile Ground Beer Co. will be located in a former laundry building previously owned by Baptist Medical Center. The taproom-focused brewery will feature an inviting space where Jackson Metro residents as well as people passing through Jackson can enjoy locally-made beer. It will provide patrons with a large welcoming interior, spacious outdoor area, and access to other attractions at Belhaven Town Center.

Fertile Ground Beer Co. is envisioned to be a third space. Third space is a sociocultural term to designate communal space, as distinct from the home (first space) or work (second space). The founders recognized a need for this, a place to gather, socialize and bring families, while incorporating their passion for craft beer. The transformative project will elevate craft beer in the capital city through an adaptive reuse development at Belhaven Town Center. Located in the commercial area of Belhaven, Belhaven Town Center opened with the first phase in early 2020 to include several new restaurants. The completed center will include dining, retail and small ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Truss Brewing Company to launch in Pittsburgh on December 16
Mark and Liann Larimer see their small business as a big blessing, the Next Pittsburgh reported on December 7.

Truss Brewing Company, a 930-square-foot takeout establishment located at 42 Old Clairton Road in Pleasant Hills, started out as a massive project. The couple, who have four children under the age of 8, was about to sign the lease on a 150-seat taproom and production facility in Observatory Hill. Then the pandemic started.

“We barely escaped financial tragedy,” Mark Larimer says.

Truss, which refers to both the framework supporting a bridge and the process of tying the wings and legs of a chicken before cooking it, opens Dec. 16.

The one-barrel brewhouse will specialize in small-batch beers and wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas made with organic dough and topped with cheeses, tomatoes and olive oil imported from Italy. Other menu items include beef filet tips, sandwiches on fresh-baked bread, salads, grilled seasonal vegetables and whole wings. They will also sell full- or half racks of ribs slathered in Truss barbecue sauce — which will also be bottled and for sale soon.

Mark Larimer worked in fine dining restaurants and spent 26 years as food and beverage director for Giant Eagle Market District. His head brewer, Aaron Busch, a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Sovereign Brewing Company now open in Seattle
Sovereign Brewing Company is a new brewery in Seattle’s Central District. It’s kind of new and it’s kind of in the Central District. Sovereign Brewing is a companion brewery to Standard Brewing Company, which has been around for more than seven years, so it’s not exactly new. It’s located on Rainier Avenue South, near Interstate 90, so it kind of in the Central District. Some would say it is located in the Rainer Valley neighborhood, the Washington Beer Blog reported on December 7.

Whatever the case, as of November 29, Sovereign Brewing is now open in Seattle.

The location at 851 Rainier Ave. South is in the old Recycling Depot building at the corner of Charles Street. A couple blocks north of I-90, a block south of Dearborn Street. At the time of publishing, Sovereign Brewing is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 – 7:00.

So why did Standard Brewing open a “sister brewery” instead of just opening another brewery? The short answer, because the focus at Sovereign Brewing is a bit different.

“For the last 7 years, we’ve been constantly evolving,” explained a post on Standard Brewing’s website. “As our processes have grown, it’s become apparent that we’ve really been operating two separate ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Goose Island Brewhouse in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood closes down for good
The popular Goose Island Brewhouse in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood has permanently closed after two-and-a-half years of operation, the latest fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported on December 5.

The 10,500-square-foot brewpub announced the shuttering late on December 4 via its Facebook and Instagram accounts. Goose Island Beer Co. is based in Chicago, and has been owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev since 2011. The company wrote Covid-19 has had a "significant impact" on its Philadelphia business.

Goose Island Beer Co. opened its Philadelphia concept at 1002 Canal St. in spring 2018. The local brewhouse was well-trafficked by Philadelphians across the city, Fishtown residents and people attending shows at neighboring music venue Fillmore Philadelphia. The project includes indoor space as well as a large outdoor seating area.

Rivers Casino Philadelphia, Philadelphia Distilling and the apocalypse-themed restaurant Mad Mex also stand near to Goose Island Brewhouse.

Goose Island Brewhouse is situated across the street from the planned 35,000-square-foot Brooklyn Bowl entertainment complex that expects to open by the end of 2021. That development comes from the New York-based bowling company in partnership with Live Nation Entertainment Inc.

Fans of Goose Island Brewhouse took to social media to lament the closure.

“Now it’s official - worst year ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: lrish whiskey makers can’t be prevented from importing barley – Agriculture Minister
Irish whiskey makers cannot be prevented from importing barley from other countries to make their products here, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has told the industry, the Independent reported on December 7.

Last year, Irish whiskey secured geographical indication protection from the European Commission and it’s now recognised in dozens of markets around the world. It means only whiskey that’s distilled and matured on the island can be labelled and sold as Irish whiskey in those markets.

Mr McConalogue was asked last week by Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns to consider amending the geographical indication to state that barley used in the manufacture of Irish whiskey must be sourced on the island.

About 17pc of total Irish barley production is used in the drinks sector, while the remainder is typically used for animal feed and seed production.

About 90,000 tonnes of barley grown in Ireland every year is used by distillers, and 160,000 tonnes by brewers.

“Independent reports estimate 93pc of all barley used in brewing and distilling is native barley, and that the balance is sourced mainly from the UK, with some imports also from the EU,” noted Mr McConalogue.

He said that next year, the department will fund a new Teagasc facility which will be ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine uses 88% of exportable surplus of barley
Ukraine has used 88% of its barley exportable surplus for the 2020/21 July-June season, shipping abroad 3.7 million tonnes of the commodity, APK-Inform agriculture consultancy said on December 9.

APK-Inform said in a report Ukraine exported 3.4 million tonnes of barley in the same period in 2019/20.

The consultancy has said Ukraine harvested 7.98 million tonnes of barley and the export could total 4.2 million tonnes.

The economy ministry, however, sees the harvest at 7.8 million tonnes and said the export could fall to 3.83 million tonnes this season from 5.08 million tonnes in the 2019/20.

APK-Inform said Ukraine had doubled its barley export to China to 2.5 million tonnes so far this season while export to Saudi Arabia, which used to be leading export destination for years, fell by 65% to 334,200 tonnes.

The growth of Ukrainian exports to China comes amid the trade conflict with Australia, its largest trading partner, after Beijing imposed a series of trade reprisals after Australia led calls for an international inquiry into the coronavirus.

Brewery news Australia: Broo Ltd completes first production run under contract with Carlton & United Breweries
One of Australia's smallest brewers, Broo Ltd has completed its first production run under the contract brewing agreement made with Carlton & United Breweries earlier this year.

The beleaguered brewery told the ASX on December 9 that it had received the first stock into its warehouse and has commenced the sale of the products through the company’s distribution channels.

The deal, first announced in August, was funded by a A$1.25 million capital raising and subsequent rights issue.

On December 9, Grogan said that Broo was “very excited” with the completion of the first production run with CUB, which the beer brand predicted would see them place orders of 432,000 litres per quarter, or 1.7 million litres a year.

“The CUB Agreement provides Broo with increased production and supply capacity and a scalable business model enabling Broo to meet and capitalise on market demand for our brands,” Grogan said.

“This is the first step for our growth in sales as we continue to focus on expansion of distribution channels and increase in revenue.”

Broo Lager and Australian Draught are not available online from Endeavour Drinks or Coles Liquor-owned bottle shops.

Broo has previously had deals with Metcash to supply independent liquor stores across Australia, but it is unclear ...More info on site
