Barley news Canada: Barley production in 2020-21 totalled 10.7 mln tonnes, final survey shows
For 2020-21, Canadian farmers produced 10.7 million tonnes of barley, according to Statistics Canada (STC)’s final 2020 production survey. This number is 5% larger than reported in STC’s September model-based report, and 3% and 23% larger than the level of last year and the previous five-year average, respectively.

At 11.8 mln tonnes, total supply has reached a ten year high.

Western Canada reported its best volume in more than a decade. Beneficial hot and dry weather conditions at the end of the growing season in much of the prairie region, the top barley producing area in Canada, allowed for a higher area harvested and better yields.

Barley production in Alberta, the top barley producing province, is 7% and 23% larger than the prior-year’s level and the previous five-year average.

For Saskatchewan, barley production dropped slightly from last year but is 27% larger than the previous five-year average.

For Manitoba, barley production is up 30% from last year and up 29% from the previous five-year average.

In contrast, barley production in Eastern Canada, including Ontario and Quebec, as well as in Atlantic provinces, is 16%, 16% and 19% below September estimates, last year's level and the previous five-year average, respectively.

Brewery news USA: Congress makes craft-brewery tax break permanent in COVID relief bill
The craft-beer industry appears to have dodged a doubling of federal excise taxes thanks to a provision in Congress’ long-awaited COVID-19 relief bill, The Daily Camera reported on December 22.

Buried within the almost-5,600-page bill is a permanent extension of the fermenters tax break, which applies to breweries, wineries and distillers. Both chambers of Congress voted to approve the $900 billion bill on December 21.

Under the provision first instituted in 2017, breweries that produce less than 2 million barrels annually are charged $3.50 per barrel in federal excise taxes for the first 60,000 barrels, down from the original $7 per barrel charge.

Larger brewers are charged $16 per barrel for their production between 60,000 barrels and 6 million barrels, down from the original $18 per barrel. Macrobrewers making more than 6 million barrels per year are charged $18 per barrel in federal taxes.

The provision also allows breweries to transfer beer to one another without incurring movement taxes.

The tax break was originally scheduled to terminate at the end of this year, something that the brewing industry lobbied aggressively against before the pandemic and in the past several months as widespread restrictions on eating and drinking establishments pushed several hospitality operators to the brink ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Twisted District Brew Co. open for business in Garden City
Twisted District Brew Co. is open for business in Garden City off Chinden Blvd. near Veterans Memorial Parkway, boisedev.com reported on December 22.

The brewery opened its doors to the public last weekend.

“From our soft opening with friends and family to a packed (half capacity of course) first day open to the public, we have definitely felt the love and support from our awesome community,” managers wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Offerings include a variety of craft beer and a full food menu. An array of hotdogs, soups and salads and appetizers are listed.

The brewery will be open seven days a week from 11am – 9pm on Weekdays, 11am – 10pm on Saturdays and 11am – 8pm on Sundays.

Twisted Districted Brew Co. is also hiring for different positions including bartenders and cooks.

Brewery news USA, PA: Necromancer Brewing Co. eyeing March launch in Pittsburgh
After months of searching for a site for their new brewery, Ben Butler and his business partner Aaron Easler have signed the lease. Look for a March opening of Necromancer Brewing Co. at 2257 Babcock Blvd. in Ross, TribLIVE reported on

“I grew up in Ross, and I love this part of Pittsburgh,” said Butler. “We had looked at other locations but this was destiny. We are so thrilled to be here. Babcock Boulevard is the crown jewel of the North Hills.” Butler is the founder of Top Hat, a Pittsburgh-based creative branding agency known for collaborating with the craft beer industry, and Easler is the creative director and partner in the firm.

People have asked Butler and Easler why they‘re opening a brewery while the pandemic is likely still going to be underway. The plan, Butler said, is to launch as if indoor dining and drinking restrictions are in place. The brewery will offer pickup and delivery, and make beers available through a select distribution.

Gov. Tom Wolf has limited bars and restaurants to takeout and delivery through at least Jan. 4.

“Normally, brewers start with a tap room and kegs and then add canning,” said Butler, a certified cicerone, the beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Bull N Bear brewery officially opens in downtown Summit
A new brewery has opened in North Jersey, the Mahwah-Ramsey Daily Voice reported on December 18.

Bull N Bear officially opened earlier this month in downtown Summit.

A craving for pumpkin ale prompted founder and owner Will Dodge to start brewing at home in April 2014. After forming a friendship with head brewer Mike Formisano, the idea of a brewery came to life.

Formisano has been brewing professionally for nine years. He won 80 awards for 20 different styles between 2010 and 2014, including a National Homebrew Competition Gold Medal, the largest brewing competition in the world, and a Silver Medal in the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition.

The 10-barrel brewery has outdoor seating and is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Brewery news Canada, MB: Black Wheat Brewing announces limited release of its first two beers
A brewery currently under construction in Brandon has announced a limited release of its first two beers, thanks to the assistance of another Manitoba brewery, the Canadian Beer News reported on December 21.

Black Wheat Brewing is being established by Ted and Gloria Birch along with two other investors, and will be located in a 4000-square-foot building at 402 10th Street.

While the build-out of the new facility is in progress, Black Wheat has contracted Barn Hammer Brewing in Winnipeg to brew inaugural batches of Reality Czech Pale Lager (4.8% abv), which features “rich, round, clean pilsner malt flavor and premium Czech yeast heavenly balanced with flowery, spicy Czech saaz hops”; and Empire Ale American IPA (6.8% abv), a “hop-forward ale with a clean fermentation profile, crisp finish, and clean supporting light malt tones allowing a range of tropical aromas and flavors from hops to shine through.”

Both Black Wheat beers can be ordered now via the Barn Hammer website for home delivery exclusively in Brandon.

Brewery news USA, MI: St. Johns Brewing Co. opens in downtown St. Johns
St. Johns got its first brewery this month, the Lansing State Journal reported on December 22.

St. Johns Brewing Co. opened downtown in a 130-year-old former bank building.

The restaurant and brewery opened Dec. 1 offering takeout only during the second state-mandated shut down of dine-in service since March.

The business, at 200 N. Clinton Ave., is the third taproom for Mountain Town Brewing Company, the Mount Pleasant brewery Jim Holton opened in 2008.

Holton has two other taprooms — Summit Smokehouse & Tap Room in Mount Pleasant and Alma Brewing Co. in Alma.

All three serve Mountain Town Brewing Company beer, but Holton said St. Johns Brewing Co. is further south in Michigan than the others. It's also the first he's opened amid a pandemic.

Work at the 5,000-square-foot space on the building's first floor began in February. Several old bank vaults have been utilized as coolers or for food storage.

Even as a brewery it's obvious the space was once home to a bank, Holton said. The building features original terrazzo flooring inside and a limestone and granite exterior that still sports a bank deposit dropbox.

"It's a very unique project," Holton said. "When you walk in you see the main vault and that was the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: March First Brewing's parent company acquires Woodburn Brewery in Cincinnati
The name will remain the same, but with new owners when Woodburn Brewery reopens in the second quarter of 2021, WCPO reported on December 22.

On Monday, December 21, March First Brewing's parent company, March First Manufacturing, LLC, announced it purchased the East Walnut Hills brewery.

The purchase included Woodburn's taproom and brewing facility, located at 2800 Woodburn Ave., along with all of the brewery's "intellectual assets." Woodburn first opened in 2016. It closed indefinitely this past June.

Woodburn is the second local brewery March First purchased since late 2019. March First added Figleaf Brewing, located in Middletown, to its portfolio in September of last year.

Both breweries join March First's craft distillery concept, Cincinnati Distilling (formerly known as Sycamore Distilling).

"The addition of 'Woodburn Brewing' to our portfolio solidifies our spot as one of the largest brewers and distillers in the Cincinnati region," said Josh Engel, March First spokesperson, in a press release. "We can't wait to build on the Woodburn brand and taproom and are thrilled to be part of the East Walnut Hills community. Woodburn Brewing will announce a robust community outreach and event schedule in 2021."

March First plans to reopen Woodburn's taproom by either spring or summer, depending on Ohio's permitting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, RI: Moniker Brewery to hold grand opening on Saturday, December 26
Moniker Brewery, Rhode Island’s newest brewery (though there are always a few on the way) is now open in Providence with a Grand Opening happening on Saturday, December 26th, the eat drink RI reported on December 20.

The company is currently offering curbside pickup for three beers, as well as some merchandise. When Moniker is open for beers in their tapoom and beer garden, another nearby business, Bucktown, will be providing food service.

Eat Drink RI emailed with Bryan Benedict, Moniker’s owner and co-founder, who had previously worked at Beer’d Brewing in Stonington, Connecticut and Horizon Beverage in Rhode Island. Benedict described himself and teammates Jeff Goodno and Ben Estes as “lager lovers, so we will always have some sessionable, crisp lagers available. That’s not to say we are going to shy away from hops.” Goodno, Director of Operations at Moniker, most recently helped build Taproot Brewing Company at Newport Vineyards and was previously at Victory Brewing Company, SoMe Brewing Company and Tributary Brewing Company. Estes is the Head Brewer at Moniker and was previously at Proclamation Ale Company and The Guild in Pawtucket.

Moniker’s first beers, which are available now for curbside pick up, are:

Whisky news France: Whisky production picking up pace in France
Whisky is France’s favourite spirit and it is the country which drinks the most in the world, The Connexion reported on December 20.

A 2016 study by marketing group Bonial found that the French drank 2.15 litres per inhabitant a year compared to Uruguay in second place at 1.77 litres and the UK in seventh place at 1.25 litres.

It even beats Champagne in popularity, with 200 million bottles of whisky drunk every year, compared to 150 million bottles of bubbly.

By 2000, there were seven distilleries and by 2020 there were around 90, and more are opening every year.

95% of them have joined the Fédération du Whisky de France which is promoting the new adventure in a sector up to now dominated by Scotland, Ireland, the US and Germany.

Its Director, Philippe Jugé, says whisky was not made until recently due to a number of historic, social and economic factors: “We are a huge grain producer but in the 16th century when there was a shortage it became illegal to use it for anything other than bread, and this principal has remained deep in our culture, perhaps because we had grapes and wine, so other ways of making spirits and alcoholic drinks."

Barley news Australia & China: WTO confirms complaint filed against China’s tariff on Australian barley
The World Trade Organization (WTO) confirmed the complaint filed against China’s tariffs on Australia’s barley exports, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on December 21.

“China did not determine the export price on a reasonable basis when it improperly discarded the information provided by exporters and producers on the export price of barley, and determined the export price by reference to third-party information,” the complaint said.

“China imposed an 80.5 per cent tariff on Australia’s barley exports in May following the conclusion of an 18-month investigation.”

“Last week, outgoing trade minister Simon Birmingham said Australia’s decision to appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was the ‘logical and appropriate next step’.”

Brewery news Australia: Australians spend an extra A$2 bln on alcohol this year
Household alcohol spending shot through the roof in Australia this year, with people spending A$2 billion more than normal on alcohol during the coronavirus pandemic, 9News reported on December 22.

A Finder analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed that in 2020, Australians spent an average of A$1891 on household alcohol – up A$270 on 2019.

Spending shot up 17 per cent year-on-year in the September quarter to A$6.18 billion, just shy of June's record-breaking A$6.21 billion.

"Months of being forced to stay home, along with the stress brought on by the pandemic, and frankly, boredom, are all reasons for increasing consumption," Finder insurance specialist Taylor Blackburn said.

"The average drinker is spending more than the cost of two gym memberships on grog."

A recent Finder survey showed spending on alcohol wasn't slowing down, with consumers looking to spend A$136 on alcohol on the period between Christmas and New Year's alone.

Following this year's pandemic, one in five Australians (20 per cent) increased their alcohol intake over the lockdown months, according to research from ANU.

Of those who drank more through the lockdowns, nearly one in three (28 per cent) consumed three to four standard drinks extra.

The top reasons for reaching for the liquor cabinet included ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Marston’s steps in to rescue one of the biggest names in Welsh brewing
Marston’s has stepped in to rescue one of the biggest names in Welsh brewing with a deal to operate SA Brains’ 156 pubs in Wales as the beer industry reels from the impact of tough coronavirus restrictions across the UK, the Financial Times reported on December 23.

The deal will secure 1,300 jobs at the largest Welsh brewer, which makes an eponymous beer brand and has been owned by the same family since it was founded in 1882. The group has, however, come under “significant financial pressure” as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

This is “a mutually beneficial transaction that safeguards the future of Wales’ leading pub company, enabling these great pubs to have a stable and successful future, and securing 1,300 hospitality jobs in Wales”, Ralph Findlay, chief executive of Marston’s, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Under the terms of the deal, UK pub group Marston’s will operate 141 Brains pubs on lease agreements, most for 25 years, and a further 15 on management contracts for two years.

The move comes at a time when many pubs are teetering on the brink of collapse. Along with other hospitality venues, pubs shut their doors for most of November during England’s second lockdown and ...More info on site

Barley news UK: No-deal Brexit expected to put in jeopardy Scottish barley and sheep sectors
The viability of many Scottish farm businesses could be put in jeopardy by a no-deal Brexit, according to a report carried out by farm consultancy Andersons, The Courier reported on December 19.

It warns the output of the export-reliant sheepmeat and barley sectors will decline if the UK fails to secure a free trade agreement (FTA) with Europe.

The report, commissioned by the Scottish Government, projects the value of the annual output from the barley sector could reduce by 17.4%, or £47 million, by 2025, and the value of the sheepmeat sector is projected to decline by 35.8%, or £76 mln, in the same period.

Other sectors are predicted to fare well out of a no-deal Brexit scenario, with the annual output from the wheat, beef and liquid milk sectors predicted to rise by 5.3%, 18.8% and 14.3% respectively by 2025.

The report attributes these rises to the UK’s reliance on imports of beef, dairy and wheat – all of which could be disrupted in a no-deal scenario.

The impact of a no-deal Brexit on farm business income is also explored in the report, which predicts declines of 20.1% and 24.2% for the cereals and Less Favoured Areas cattle and sheep ventures respectively.
