USA: Constellation Brands’ Q3 results surpass analysts’ expectations
|
Constellation Brands on January 7 reported fiscal third-quarter profit of $1.28 billion.
The Victor, New York-based company, whose Chicago-based beer division imports Corona and Modela beers, said it had profit of $6.55 per share. Earnings, adjusted for nonrecurring gains, came to $3.09 per share.
The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.41 per share.
The wine, liquor and beer company posted revenue of $2.64 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.44 billion, also topping Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.27 billion.
Constellation Brands expects full-year earnings in the range of $9.80 to $10.05 per share.
Constellation Brands shares have risen 2% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has increased 16%. The stock has climbed 17% in the last 12 months.

USA, GA: Kettlerock Brewing coming to Peachtree Corners early this year
|
Kettlerock Brewing opens early this year in the Gwinnett County city of Peachtree Corners. Owned by the Peet family, the 5,000-square-foot microbrewery replaces Nemoe’s Tavern and Grill, which closed in 2018 on Peachtree Parkway, the Eater Atlanta reported on January 7.
Once open, Kettlerock will feature a brewing facility and taproom offering a rotating selection of beers on draft. Beers set for production include IPAs and wheat and Belgian-styles brews, along with seasonal beers and non-alcoholic craft sodas.
Dianna Peet serves as Kettlerock Brewing’s CEO, with Sterling Peet as brew master. The couple’s children and their spouses are also helping to run the brewery business.
A handful of new breweries should open around Atlanta this year. Southern rap quartet Nappy Roots plans to open its microbrewery Atlantucky Brewing at the Intown Loft Apartment complex on Northside Drive in Castleberry Hill. Inner Voice Brewing opens this spring in the former Big Tex restaurant space on West Ponce in the city of Decatur. Underwood Hills-based brewery Round Trip Brewing opens this winter along Seaboard Industrial Boulevard in the northwest Atlanta neighborhood. USA, NC: D9 Brewing Co. to open second location in Hendersonville
|
A new microbrewery, taproom and coffee shop is slated to open in downtown Hendersonville this spring, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on January 8.
The city will become home to the second location of D9 Brewing Co., in the former Swanson’s piano store. D9 was born from two friends brewing beer in a garage. They later opened a small commercial facility then a microbrewery/taproom in Lake Norman in 2014.
In 2019, they decided to branch out to other areas of North Carolina.
“We grew up the business just like any other small brewery,” said Andrew Durstewitz, D9 co-owner and co-founder, who is also an engineer. “Really what we decided in 2014 would be our differentiator was this idea of being unquestionably original, so we always want original products to be brought to the market.”
A third location will also open this year in Charlotte. Each location will offer a menu of “core” beers from D9 as well as brews unique to the taste preferences of that community.
“Each location is going to be beer-specific to the brewer and their innovation process,” said Megan Miller, D9 marketing director.

A new outdoor stage and a brew pub are two of the improvements underway at Myrtle Beach’s Nance Plaza, WPDE reported on January 7.
Grand Strand Brewing Company is installing its equipment and getting ready to open next month.

USA, PA: Five friends launching Back Alley Brewing in Dormont
|
When their homebrewing operation outgrew the confines of a domestic kitchen, five Dormont residents started making beer in the narrow streets behind their homes, NEXTpittsburgh reported on January 7.
“Almost every road in Dormont has alleys shooting off of it. They really tie the community together,” says Cody Hoellerman. Now he and friends Lee Sifford, Jacob Maxwell and Patrick and Patricia McKinley, are bringing Back Alley Brewing to the neighborhood this spring.
The brewery will occupy the 8,000-square-foot former Dormont Borough Municipal Building at 2975 W. Liberty Ave. At full capacity, about 120 customers can occupy the taproom, but the large space allows for social distancing. There are two spacious rooms on the second floor for additional seating and private events.
To complement their pints, customers can choose from a menu of traditional pub fare.
The five-barrel brewing system, which is housed in a spot once occupied by the local fire department, will produce a wide range of beer styles, as well as hard ciders and seltzers and non-alcoholic soda pop. A commercial canning line will allow for libations to go.

Japan & Myanmar: Kirin’s audit of Myanmar brewing partner inconclusive due to lack of information
|
Japanese beverage maker Kirin Holdings on January 6 announced that its audit of the financial and governance structures of its business partner in Myanmar failed to produce results due to a lack of information from its counterpart, the Nikkei Asia reported.
Kirin commissioned Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory to conduct an independent assessment of its partner, Myanma Economic Holdings, in June. "Unfortunately, the assessment was inconclusive as a result of Deloitte being unable to access sufficient information required to make a definitive determination," Kirin said in a statement.
MEHL is one of two big military-linked conglomerates in the Southeast Asian country, along with Myanmar Economic Corporation. It operates a wide range of businesses, ranging from finance, to agriculture, to mining. Kirin has two joint-venture companies with MEHL, Myanmar Brewery and Mandalay Brewery, holding a 51% stake in each.
MEHL has close ties to the military, which has been accused of massacring Muslim minority Rohingyas and destroying their villages. Critics say MEHL offers a conduit for finance that bypasses formal civilian government channels. The purpose of Kirin's assessment was to determine where proceeds from the joint-venture businesses end up.

UK: High-end whisky exporters worried about post-Brexit trading rules
|
High-end whisky exporters fear post-Brexit trading rules could lead to aged malts being blocked from sale on the continent, the Press and Journal reported on January 8.
Britain’s exit from the EU means exporters will have to obey complex “rules of origin” laws if they want to continue to sell products in Europe.
The rules require a breakdown of where a product and its component parts originate from.
If exporters can prove more than 50% of their product is made or manufactured in the UK, they will enjoy the benefits of the free trade agreement negotiated by Boris Johnson – if not, they will be forced to pay tariffs.
A senior manger at one Scotch whisky firm told us he feared it could create problems for the sale of 50-year-old malts, as breakdowns of where the malt barley or grain came from to produce the whisky no longer exist.
He said: “Up to now it has been easy to export to Europe as the amount of documentation was minimal, but we will now have to deal with more customs declarations and shipping regulations, but the real complexity will come with the implementation of Rules of Origin Certification, and what standards and requirements will be involved.

France: December barley exports the lowest since 2009/10 season
|
French soft wheat shipments outside the European Union in December fell from a season's high the previous month as exports to China eased, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv data showed.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the EU totalled 797,000 tonnes in December, the sixth month of the 2020/21 season, the Refinitiv loading data showed.
That was below the 877,000 tonnes recorded in November, although December's total was still the second-largest so far this season.
China was the largest importer of French soft wheat outside the EU for a third straight month in December, accounting for 271,300 tonnes.
Including feed barley and malting barley, a total of 400,900 tonnes of grains was shipped to China from France last month, the lowest volume since September.
Algeria was the second-largest destination for French soft wheat in November with 213,300 tonnes shipped. Exports to Algeria, usually France's main overseas wheat market, continued to rebound after minimal volumes in October and September.
December's soft wheat exports also showed a downturn in flows to other countries outside the EU. Pakistan was the third-largest single-country destination with 66,000 tonnes.

South Africa: South African Breweries to challenge government-imposing ban on alcohol sales in court
|
South African Breweries (SAB) has said it will challenge the constitutionality of the government-imposed alcohol sales ban in court, The Drinks Business reported on January 7.
In a statement, the company said it shares the South African government’s concerns over the surge in Covid cases and welcomes all lawful measures in order to control the spread of the virus.
However SAB said it “strongly disagreed” with the imposition of a domestic alcohol sales ban, and after “much consideration”, it has decided to approach the courts.
“SAB has decided to approach the courts to challenge the constitutionality of the decision taken and process followed by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) to re-ban the sale of alcohol,” the brewer said. “The legal action is the last resort available to SAB to protect our employees, suppliers, customers, and all the livelihoods we support.”
“SAB believes any ban, including the current one, goes far beyond what is reasonable and necessary to contain the spread of the virus and unlawfully restricts various rights that are enshrined and protected by our constitution,” the brewer added. “These include the right to freedom of trade, the right to human dignity, privacy, and the right to bodily and psychological integrity.”

UK: Alcohol sales soar at UK supermarkets over Christmas
|
The alcoholic drinks category led the charge as UK supermarkets enjoyed their strongest ever Christmas trading period, according to Nielsen till scan data.
Brits spent a record-breaking £12 billion in the grocery channel during the four weeks to December 26, and Nielsen said beer, wine and spirits was the fastest growing category overall.
Champagne sales increased 18%, crémant sales were up 51% and there were also strong gains for spirits: tequila grew 59%, flavoured vodka increased 50% and spiced rum continued its upward march by increasing 47%.
Online accounted for 12.5% of sales, double the proportion it achieved during Christmas 2019, while the average basket spend also reached record highs.
On-trade venues across the majority of the country were closed due to a sharp uptick in Covid-19 cases, so Brits stocked up in the off-trade instead.
In terms of retailer performance over the 12 weeks to Boxing Day, Lidl led the growth by increasing sales 20.9% year-on-year, followed by Morrisons at 9.2%.
Morrisons also hailed Champagne as an in-demand category, with sales increasing 64% year-on-year.
