Brewery news USA, TX: Mission Trail Brewery hoping to launch in Socorro by the end of February
El Pasoan Ricardo "Rick" Razo and his business partners had the name of their business venture before they found its location, the El Paso Times reported on January 12.

They knew they wanted to name it the Mission Trail Brewery when they started looking for a spot. And then they got a call about an old adobe building on Socorro Road.

"(The owner) told us about this place in Socorro. And I thought Socorro? But then we came and saw the history of the building and the aesthetic value and it's on the Mission Trail — it was perfect for our company," Razo said.

Razo and one of his partners, Travis Stoner, are hoping to have the brewery ready by the end of February. The brewery, at 10179 Socorro Road, is being promoted in a Kickstarter campaign to raise $5,000. So far, $1,135 has been raised.

"We saw the Kickstarter as a good opportunity for us to pre-promote before we open the doors and give everybody an opportunity to help back us and fund some of the projects we really want to do," Stoner said.

Stoner said they want to use the funds to renovate the back patio for entertaining, purchase a second fermenter for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Portland Brewing shutting its doors for good
One of the breweries from the groundbreaking class of the mid-'80s that helped put Portland on the map as a beer mecca is shutting its doors for good, the Willamette Week reported on January 11.

Portland Brewing announced on January 8 on its Facebook page that it would cease operations on Feb. 5. Twenty-seven employees will lose their jobs and receive paid severance.

Mary Beth Popp, vice president of brand and corporate communications for the company that owns Portland Brewing, Florida Ice & Farm Co., tells WW that the pandemic was not a factor, unlike so many other closures we've heard about this year.

"We wish there were an alternative. The history of the Portland brewery and its brands made this a very difficult decision," Rich Andrews, FIFCO USA's CEO, stated in a press release. "It just no longer made sense to sustain the operation given the brand footprint, competitive craft beer landscape, and capital investments needed to update the brewery."

Although the Portland Brewing and MacTarnahan's brands are coming to an end, Pyramid will live on. But those brews will not be produced locally—their new manufacturing hub is going to be in Rochester, N.Y.

Brewery news USA, PA: Hanover’s Miscreation Brewing Company closing its doors for good
After almost six years, Miscreation Brewing Company in Hanover has announced it will be closing its doors for good, the York Daily Record reported on January 10.

The craft brewery in downtown Hanover wrote on January 10 on its Facebook page that it would cease operations this weekend on Jan. 16 after facing irreversible financial burdens from the coronavirus pandemic.

"We understand although this will impact many of our faithful followers/patrons, we take solace in knowing we have fostered many friendships over the past 5-1/2 years that will last a lifetime," the Facebook page noted.

The brewery previously planned to close its doors this month while waiting for Gov. Tom Wolf's indoor dining restriction and additional mandates to be lifted.

However, clearly those plans have changed.

"We can’t express enough gratitude to our many employees/team members over the years for their dedication, contributions to the vision and ultimately the customer experience," the announcement notes. "Additionally, we are pleased that we were able to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Hanover and partner with Main Street to bring a vibrant experience to so many."

Central Pennsylvania diners had to say goodbye to a slew of restaurants and bars in 2020. And like Miscreation, most ...More info on site

Brewery news India: AB InBev’s super mild Beck’s Ice Premium Lager expected to have dual positive impact for the company
Multinational beer brewer AB InBev says the launch of a new super-mild beer in India will have dual positive impacts for the company: To both boost its low-and-no alcohol portfolio, while simultaneously adapting to local regulations, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on January 13.

The firm’s latest product is the Beck’s Ice Premium Lager, which is a ‘super mild’ beer containing less than 3.5% ABV, which is the industry’s first ever super mild beer according to the firm.

“With the introduction of Beck’s Ice Premium Lager, [we want to ] offer consumers the same smooth, refreshing taste of 100% pure malt beer [that Beck’s always has] with its low bitterness to consumers who prefer lower alcohol strength beer,” AB InBev President – South Asia Kartikeya Sharma told FoodNavigator-Asia.

“This introduction also further cements AB InBev’s Smart Drinking Goal to ensure that low and no-alcohol beers make up at least 20% of our global beer volume by 2025 thus, empowering consumers through choice to enjoy beer freely and responsibly.”

This low- and no-alcohol portfolio goal is Goal 3 amongst AB InBev’s list of four global Smart Drinking Goals, with the firm stating that providing more of such option is an ‘important way to help reduce harmful drinking’.

“Our ambition ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Beer set to get cheaper in Uttar Pradesh
Beer is set to get cheaper in Uttar Pradesh with the government on January 9 announcing an excise duty slash on the brew in the next fiscal. From 280%, the duty is set to fall to approximately 200%, the Times of India reported.

Also, license fee has also not been increased for beer vends in the excise policy, which expects to mop up revenue of Rs 34,500 crore.

Cost of wine, low alcoholic beverages and foreign liquor is also set to dip with the government reducing Covid cess in these categories by almost half. “With neighbouring states neighbouring states withdrawing Covid cess, liquor in UP would have been more expensive. So, the cess has been reduced on wine, local alcoholic beverages and foreign liquor ,” a government order said.

Licence fee for all shops, except beer vends has been raised by 7.5%.

The policy puts an impetus on brewing beer and wine in the state to ensure minimal waste of grain and fruits.

Even now, grain and fruit go waste, leading to huge losses for farmers and these can be ploughed in to manufacture beer and wine in UP, which hasn’t happened before. Besides cutting wastage, the move will generate jobs and revenue,” said an ...More info on site
