Brewery news Nigeria: Investors count losses as restrictions, taxes slow breweries
The brewery industry in Nigeria is reeling under pangs of poor consumer spending, induced by the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and recession. The situation has left investors counting and lamenting their losses, the Guardian reported on January 25.

The recession has caused the bottom line of the industry’s listed equities to remain subdued with gloomy 2021 outlook.

The Vice Chairman of High Cap Securities Limited, Imafidon Adonri, described the brewery industry as a creator of enormous wealth and probably the largest employer of production labour, following the collapse of the textile industry.

He, however, lamented that though the industry had been entrenched and contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP, its 2021 prospect is not bright, considering the second wave of COVID-19.

The challenges of the industry started with tough fiscal regulations, including the June 2018 excise duty burden on beer, wines and spirits as well as the new VAT rate of 7.5 per cent implemented in February 2020. It is currently faced with COVID-19 restrictions on beer production and consumption, hitting independent brewers extremely hard.

He said: “Before COVID-19, the sector had been experiencing difficulties due to shrinking demand. First, insecurity in Northern Nigeria and ban on alcoholic beverages in large parts of Northern Nigeria continue ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Craft Beer Association of Thailand asks government to drop ban on alcohol sales in restaurants and allow bars to reopen
Members and supporters of the Craft Beer Association of Thailand on January 25 gathered at the Covid-19 task force's office at the Interior Ministry, asking the government to drop the ban on alcohol sales in restaurants and allow bars to reopen, the Bangkok Post reported.

Representatives of the association said the latest wave of Covid-19 has had a more severe impact on craft beer makers and retailers, as during the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak they were still able to sell their products online.

As the government moved to ban the online sales of alcoholic beverages on Dec 7 last year, craft beer makers had no other option but to sell their products to restaurants, which are no longer allowed to serve alcohol on their premises, the association's representative said.

They urged the ministry to consider easing restrictions on an area-by-area basis and pledged to strictly comply with the government's disease control measures.

The association and its supporters also went to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to submit the same request.

An Interior Ministry's representative said while the task force's ad-hoc committee on Covid-19 control measures will consider the association's request, the restrictions cannot be lifted immediately.

The ministry will forward the association's request to the ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Brewers likely to be negatively affected by latest mandatory control order
Brewers are likely to be negatively affected by the implementation of the latest mandatory control order (MCO), particularly in terms of lower malt liquor market (MLM) volume, the Star Online reported on January 21

CGS-CIMB Equities Research, in a report, said each fortnight of the MCO would negatively impact its financial year (FY) 2021 earnings per share (EPS) forecasts for Carlsberg Brewery Bhd and Heineken Malaysia Bhd by 3.2% and 5.9%, respectively.

“In our view, Carlsberg will be less impacted versus Heineken, given that 26.7% of the former’s revenue (nine months 2020) is derived from its Singapore operations (bulk of Heineken’s revenue is derived locally).

“We have yet to account for this in our FY21 EPS for both companies, pending further updates on the length of the implementation of MCO,” the house said.

Despite the expected near-term weakness in MLM volume, CGS-CIMB Research believed that long-term demand for beer would remain inelastic in the country.

This is backed by its attractiveness in terms of better affordability among consumers due to its lower price points versus other premium alcohol products, such as wine or spirits. Also, beers are widely available, as they are sold in more off-trade and on-trade locations such as coffee shops and food ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Brewers and retailers flag lack of clarity as to what Brexit means for beer imports from the EU
Brewers and retailers have reported that there is a lack of clarity among UK consumers as to what Brexit means for beer imports from the EU, the Drinks Business reported on January 25.

In December 2020, UK lovers of European craft beer were getting their last orders in. Quoting confusion over what Brexit could mean for deliveries, consumers shared their experiences and advice online. While others were hoarding olive oil and Camembert, Facebook and Instagram saw a flurry of social media posts about making large stockpiles of European beers. One Facebook user posted a selection of Finnish beers, saying the decision to buy had been made “before Brexit could complicate matters”.

Craft beer consumers often enjoy talking about their purchases online, but these latest posts may have contributed to a real upsurge in sales.

Danish brewery Mikkeller said its Christmas sales to the UK were 33% higher than predicted. Chief operations officer Jacob Alsing told the drinks business: “People definitely wanted to ‘Brexit-proof’ their craft beer selection.”

Not all EU breweries benefitted from a pre-Brexit boom. Swedish brewery Omnipollo found its fans “supportive” but caught out by a lack of clarity on the availability European beer in 2021. Magnus Björnstjerna, operations manager at Omnipollo, ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Ireland running out of keg beer
Ireland is running dry of beer after the big breweries stopped delivering kegs all over the country, the Irish Mirror reported on January 22.

It is now almost impossible to buy a keg full of pints and over 1,000 illegal shebeens are running out of booze.

Diageo stopped delivering kegs of Guinness, Carlsberg and Rockshore nationwide in early January after the Taoiseach Micheal Martin demanded pubs stop selling takeaway pints.

He felt it was encouraging people to socialise when everyone should stay at home with the Covid pandemic out of control. Heineken then followed suit.

The majority of publicans stopped doing home deliveries while others felt Mr Martin's call was unfair and carried on as normal. Now however they can't get beer anywhere.

A Diageo source said: "From last March to June we stopped all deliveries to pubs and wholesalers. We then re-opened for over six months.

"With the current wave of the virus crippling the country we then decided in early January to stop everything. You can't even get a keg in a "cash and carry."

"The whole drinks industry from the breweries to the pubs and restaurants are trying to row in behind the Government for the greater good and to encourage our customers to ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Ban on sale of alcohol offers strong growth trajectory to non-alcoholic beer
The ban on the sale of alcohol has catapulted South Africa’s non-alcoholic adult drinks industry to a strong growth trajectory, a trend that is expected to continue, the Business Live reported on January 24.

Johannes le Roux, founder and managing director of The Duchess Drinks Company, said the company’s non-alcoholic adult drinks brands revenue grew by 100% year on year in December 2020. He expects a similar performance in 2021.

The Duchess range has three alcohol-free gin and tonic brands — Botanical, Greenery and Floral — and two non-alcoholic wine spritzers — Elderflower and Berry Rose. The low or non-alcohol drinks company was created in 2016 for consumers who seek to reduce their intake of alcohol.

Le Roux said the lockdown “has fast-tracked the trends and movements of this market on a massive scale”, with the first lockdown a sampling phase that attracted new consumers.

Leanne Owens, adjacencies director at SAB, said sales of their non-alcoholic beer brands doubled or tripled during lockdowns, when the purchase of alcohol was banned.

AB InBev, which owns SAB, has a range of non-alcohol beers that include Castle Free, Becks Blue, and Budweiser Zero.

“The demand for the range has outstripped supply,” said Le Roux. This was in line with ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries suspends 550 temporary workers contracts indefinitely
South African Breweries (SAB), a unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev, has suspended the contracts of 550 temporary workers indefinitely with immediate effect due to the latest ban on alcohol sales, Business Times reported on January 24.

This will reduce SAB’s current workforce to 5,357, the Sunday Times business paper said, adding that staff affected received their last payment on Friday and will receive no income during the suspension.

“The third alcohol ban has resulted in reduced demand for temporary workers’ skills. This is no fault of their own but rather a result of the current operating environment,” SAB’s vice-president of corporate affairs Zoleka Lisa told the paper.

“We realise the impact this decision will have on 550 families who will sadly have to go without because of the uncertainty of the alcohol ban.”

SAB was not immediately available for comment.

The workers who have lost their jobs are mostly part of the brewer’s supply and logistics division and include packers and delivery personnel, Business Times said.

South Africa recently banned alcohol sales for the third time as part of efforts to free up space for COVID-19 patients in hospitals burdened with alcohol-related injuries.

About 30% of local breweries have been forced to shut their doors permanently and some, ...More info on site

Brewery news Belize: New locally made beer launched in Belize
A new locally made beer, from Belize’s sugar district, will soon be hitting the shelves of retail stores countrywide. The new lager is being brewed in Carmelita, Orange Walk, and is the creation of three Chinese businessmen who aim to provide goods and services to a local market. As a result, Pirate Beer is now one of the only two beers being produced by Caribbean International Brewery and sold in Belize’s domestic market, Amandala.com.bz reported on January 17.

According to the Deputy Manager of Caribbean International Brewing (CIB), Nelsie Campos, the lager is comparable to Lighthouse Beer, in the sense that it is a light-coloured beer with a low concentration of hops. Campos also stated that the water used to brew Pirate beer is collected from personally dug, deep-ground wells and that the ingredients are mainly imported.

While Caribbean International has been heavily promoting Pirate beer within the country and aims to make the beer available countrywide, Campos has confirmed that they do intend to obtain most of their revenue through exportation of the lager to foreign markets. Initially, Pirate beer was only available in Corozal and Orange Walk; however, shipments have now been sent throughout the country.

The main challenge being faced ...More info on site

Brewery news Ukraine: AB InBev Efes bringst wo new lagers under Modelo brand to Ukraine
AB InBev Efes has begun importing two new lagers under the Modelo brand into Ukraine from Mexico, the company's press service told Interfax-Ukraine on January 21.

The company said that the Ukrainian stores already sell Modelo Especial light lager of the pilsner type Modelo Especial (contains 4.5% alcohol) and dark Modelo Negra (contains 5.4% alcohol), both drinks are available in 355-ml glass bottles.

Representatives of the company do not disclose information on the volume of imports of the new product to Ukraine but noted that no local production of the lagers is planned.

Modelo is the export brand of the Mexican company Grupo Modelo, best known for its Corona brand. The company is part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev Corporation.

As reported, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian brewing market AB InBev Efes Ukraine was created in 2018 as a result of the merger of AB InBev and Anadolu Efes on the territory of Ukraine and Russia. AB InBev Efes Ukraine has three breweries in Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Mykolaiv.

BarleyBarley News Barley

Barley news Canada: Barley production up 3% in 2020-21 but expected to drop by 12% in 2021-22
For 2020-21, barley production in Canada increased by 3% from the previous year to 10.7 million tonnes (Mt), largely due to higher harvested area and better yields, reaching the highest level since 2008-09, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on January 25.

Total supply has reached a ten-year high at 11.8 Mt, due to good production, despite low carry-in stocks.

Canadian barley exports, including grain and products, are expected to be 3.5 Mt, 15% higher than last year, based on the current strong export pace.

Domestic use is expected to decline slightly on lower feed consumption. Industrial use is expected to recover, but will be lower than the level in 2018-19.

Owing to larger supplies, carry-out stocks are expected to rise by 5% from last year, but are still 25% lower than the previous five-year average.

The average price of feed barley for 2020-21 is expected to rise by 6% from 2019-20 to C$245/t as a result of strong demand for exports and domestic use, as well as supportive corn prices.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that 2020-21 world barley production will remain stable from last year, due to increased barley production in Australia, Canada and Russia offsetting lower barley production in ...More info on site

Barley news USA: American Malting Barley Association publishes list of recommended malting barley varieties for the 2021 crop year
The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) board of directors has developed a list of recommended malting barley varieties for U.S. growers for the 2021 crop year.

AMBA is a nonprofit trade association of 58 brewing, distilling and malting companies that are end-users of U.S. malting barley. The list is meant to inform U.S. producers which malting barley varieties the industry intends to use in the upcoming year. Some varieties will be used in large quantities and many others are only utilized is niche markets, so producers are encouraged to contact their local elevator, grain handler or processor to gauge market demand for any variety grown in their region prior to seeding.

Changes from the previous year include dropping Scarlett, and the addition of Flavia, Mayflower and Moravian 179. Flavia is a winter variety developed by Ackermann Saatzucht in Germany. It has done well in the mid-Atlantic and other areas of the eastern United States. Mayflower came out of the Malteurop breeding program. It has good yields in the northern plains and intermountain west. Mayflower has lower protein and moderate enzyme levels desired for use in making all malt beers. Molson Coors developed and released Moravian 179. It has demonstrated higher yields, ...More info on site
