Heineken has made an important move for the expansion of its current share in the German beer market which is the largest in Europe and which is at the same time one of the most fragmented, with about 1270 breweries. In order to obtain a more solid position in Germany , Heineken together with Schorghuber Corporate Group bought 45 % from the stock of Karlsberg International Brand GmbH (KIB),a company from Germany which yearly sells 3900000 hectolitres of beer and which appertains to Carlsberg group. Alhambra brewery from Spain has managed to increase in this financial year its production by 33%. As a result of this accomplishment , company's sales rose as well . Hence, in 2001 Alhambra succeeded to obtain sales of EUR 57,33 mln , which is an increase of 34 % over the sales registered in the precedent year.

Baltica , the first brewery from Russia with a market share of 33 %, is willing to strengthen more its position on the Russian beer market and to expand its actual market share . In order to reach such a performance the Russian brewer is increasing the capacities of its actual breweries and building other new ones. The proof of this fact is the construction of other new brewery (the third in 2002) by Baltica in Habarovsk (Eastern Siberia). It is planned that the brewery from Habarovsk will begin to operate in the next summer and its capacity will be of 1000000 hl. The beer market from Russia is in continuous growth . In this year it grew by 14% . What's more , the sector analysts state that it is very likely that this market will steadily grow in the following years. The forecasts say also that beer consumption per capita will reach in 2006 the value of 71,0 liters in 2001 this figure being of 42,6 liters only. Miller has been finally sold to SAB. This piece of news has been announced to the public this Thursday by a spokesperson of Miller . The amount of this transaction has been also announced - SAB has paid USD 5.6 milliard for its new acquisition. The new company which becomes the second brewery in the world after Anheuser Busch will be named " SABMiller" and its headquarter will be located in London. The activity of the new formed company will be focused on brewing , marketing and ........[www.e-malt.com]

3. Malt markets and prices.

Domestic EU business continued at a brisk pace during May, albeit at lower price levels, as a consequence of weaker barley markets. Most prices concluded during the month, were around EUR 290,-, delivered breweries, average price for 2003. Larger brewery groups managed to purchase well below average price levels. The EU brewers have covered most of their needs for 2003 by now.
