0 South Africa: SABMiller shares dropped 4.4 percent after Heineken had ended Amstel South Africa contract

Shares in brewer SABMiller PLC dropped more than 4 percent Tuesday after rival Heineken NV ended the company's contract to make Amstel lager in South Africa, Associated Press reported March 13.

Heineken said late Monday it had terminated the licensing agreement that allows SABMiller to brew, market and distribute Amstel lager in South Africa and that it plans to build its own brewery there – meaning that London-listed SABMiller is facing increased competition in a market it currently dominates.

SABMiller said it will lose $80 million (60 million euros) in earnings before interest, taxes and amortization in the next fiscal year because of the loss of sales of Amstel, which currently represent 9 percent of its beer volumes in South Africa.

The company, which has a 97.5 percent share of the South African market, said it is already pursuing a number of initiatives to mitigate the impact of the license termination, including broadening its premium offering.

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Trevor Stirling said the loss of the deal, a bone of contention between the two companies for some time, was clearly a blow for SABMiller, but added that it “causes headaches for both of them.”

Stirling estimates that SABMiller's other ...

0 Croatia: Karlovacka Brewery operations banned because of CO2 leaking into fermentation

Ministry of Environmental Protection inspection banned operation of Karlovacka brewery until it enables CO2 recovery appliance, Javno News reported March 12.

Temporary ban will be in effect until the irregularities are removed, i.e. until Karlovacka brewery does not enable its carbon dioxide recovery appliance.

Due to wrongly placed pipes, carbon dioxide leaked into the fermentation drive of Karlovacka brewery, but it is not familiar for how long.

Because of carbon dioxide poisoning of Zdravko Martinovic vented into the stream behind the brewery, the brewery`s technical director Gabor Ligeti was brought in last week to the County court inquest centre, along with Karlovacka brewery chief engineer Slaven Siladic, fermentation production manager Marinko Kovacevic and security at work and environmental protection manager Zrinka Odrcic, judge Alenka Laptalo and County court in Karlovac spokesperson notified.

But, they were released afterwards, and the State attorney’s office demanded their custody.

Documentation was omitted from the Karlovacka brewery, and an inquest was conducted, during which all evidence were ensured as well as facts determined linked with carbon dioxide leak.

0 Denmark: Carlsberg may close several European breweries

Carlsberg could close several of its breweries in Western Europe during 2007, chief executive Nils Smedegaard Andersen said, according to news agency Direkt, AFX News Limited reported March 7.

“Nordic countries and other smaller countries should typically have one brewery each,” Direkt quoted him as saying, adding that bigger countries should have two.

However, Smedegaard Andersen does not presently see any significant overcapacity at Carlsberg's breweries, Direkt said.

Smedegaard Andersen said there 'is no point closing breweries with a critical mass unless real estate is involved.'

This may indicate that Carlsberg's breweries in Leeds and Hamburg may be closed, since they are located in attractive areas in the centre of the cities, Direkt speculated.

0 Ireland: Tillage farmers protest at Greencore demanding doubling barley premiums

About 150 farmers, who staged a protest outside Minch Malt — part of the Greencore Group, in Athy, Co Kildare — said the company had offered a derisory premium of €15 per tonne for a quality product while at the same time consumers were being asked to pay more for their pint, Irish Examiner reported March 14.

Grain growers warned they will not guarantee a supply of malting barley for use in the brewing of drinks including Guinness unless they get a fair price for the crop.

However, Minch Malt said it had offered growers the option of a guaranteed fixed price of €140 per tonne at 20% moisture.

“This guaranteed price will suit growers who prefer certainty and wish to minimise price risk and is an alternative to the €15 premium on average feeding barley price at 2007 harvest,” said Pat Murphy, Minch Malt purchasing director.

“Minch Malt is also giving growers the option to mix the fixed and variable options as it suits the grower.”

But IFA Grain Committee chairman Colum McDonnell said market conditions justify a doubling of the malting premium paid to growers. He said publicans, Government, brewers and maltsters account for 99.8% of the price of ...
