1. Industry news

Following the success of his British beer in India, London-based NRI industrialist Karan Billimoria plans to set up a £10-million brewery either in Hyderabad or near Delhi, The Times of India reported. Founder Chief Executive of British Cobra Beer, Billimoria said the brewery would most probably be set up this year to manufacture three million cases of bear annually in the country. He said that the company would acquire an Indian brewery for manufacture of Cobra beer in the country and was in the process of identifying one in Hyderabad or near Delhi. He said the per capita consumption of beer in the country was a mere 0.7 litre per year as against 18 litres in China and 55 litres in South Africa. He preferred to acquire a brewery than a greenfield one as he would not want to go through the hassles of getting a licence which was cumbersome and difficult. Cobra beer was orignally brewed in India at Mysore Breweries and exported to England.

Anheuser-Busch, Inc., the U.S. beer subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., achieved record U.S. beer sales volume in 2002, it was announced by Anheuser-Busch, Inc., President, August A. Busch IV. "We are extremely pleased to report that our domestic beer shipments to wholesalers grew to an all-time high of 101.8 million barrels in 2002 -- increasing 2.1 million barrels or 2.1 percent over 2001," said Busch. "For the first time, total domestic shipments exceeded the 100 million barrel milestone. This record achievement, led by the Bud family and the successful introductions of Michelob Ultra and Bacardi Silver, reflects the hard work and dedication by all of our employees and wholesaler partners across the country," Busch noted....... more info

MOSCOW (Prime Tass) -- No. 1 brewer Baltika plans to increase exports in 2003 by 76 percent to 16 million decaliters, or 8 percent of its predicted output for the year, a company representative said Friday, Moscow times reported. The St. Petersburg-based brewer will also dip its toes into Asian markets this year with trial deliveries to South Korea, Japan and China. Fundamental to the company's expansion in the east is its $50 million brewery in Khabarovsk in the Far East, which is due to open in the first half of the year, the representative said.

In November 2002 Ukraine exported 304,000 tons of barley - by 36,000 tons or 10 percent less than in October. Average price for barley under November contracts constituted $82.3 per ton against $77.5 per ton in October, according to an Ukrainian source. Shipments decreased to Spain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, but increased sharply to Japan - to 40,000 tons from 3,400 tons in October. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia remained basic purchaser of Ukrainian barley in November, having bought 46 percent of total Ukraine's export, the same as in the previous month. Totally, since the start of the marketing year (July) till November Ukraine exported 1.7 million tons of barley - 9 percent up from export over the same months the year before..........more info
