ABSTRACT
Using HPLC to measure the content of alpha acids and iso-alpha acids is the standard in most breweries but also in institute laboratories. These Czech researchers did an extensive comparison of the current HPLC methods against the use of UHPLC (Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography). They found that besides an economic benefit (reduction of time, energy and organic solvents as a result of significant analysis time reduction) this method affords measurement with lower variance of results.

Brewery news Australia: Coopers brewery reaching out to more drinkers across Australia
After more than 150 years of dominating brewing in its home state of South Australia, the family owned Coopers is now reaching out to more drinkers in other states than ever before with New South Wales poised to become Coopers’ largest domestic market, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on May, 1.

It comes as the brewer consolidates its position in the eastern states and leverages off a string of licensing deals struck with international brewers to distribute popular foreign beers including Carlsberg, Sapporo, Kronenbourg 1664 and Mythos.

Coopers said on May, 1 that in January Coopers’ beer sales in NSW topped those of its home state for the first time.

‘‘While the result was not repeated in February, March or April, there was no doubt that NSW would quickly overtake South Australia on a regular basis,’’ Coopers’ chairman Glenn Cooper said.

“On a year to date basis (July to April), South Australia accounts for 29 per cent of Coopers’ total sales compared with almost 26 per cent for NSW,” he said. “However, the gap is narrowing quickly.’’

It is also believed that some Coopers sales in Queensland are for the NSW market.

He said January was the first month that more Coopers beer was sold in ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia to keep its beers prices stable this year
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (Carlsberg Malaysia) said there will be no more price hikes for its line of beer this year, following an increase announced earlier this month, its managing director Soren Ravn was quoted as saying by The Sun Daily on April, 29.

"It was a small price increase in line with inflation, less than 3% and has been communicated to the outlets…there will be no more increases for this year," he told reporters after its AGM on April, 26.

Ravn said there are also no plans to introduce more premium brands into the market in the near term as the brewer intends to focus on the growth of its current portfolio.

"Our premium brands (numbers) are very small compared with our competitor but they are growing fast. We don't want to bring in too many premium brands because we don't want to dilute the market with too many small brands. There is no immediate plan or need to bring in new premium brands," he said.

Ravn said the premium beer segment was a key contributor to its financial results with a significant growth in sales from locally produced Asahi Super Dry and Kronenbourg 1664.

He said its increasing market share in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Costa Rica: Craft beer sector ready to welcome new players
The craft beer industry is growing throughout the world. It makes up about 15% of the volume of beer brewed and around 17% of the volume if based in dollars. In Costa Rica, too, this is a great industry in which to get involved, The Costa Rican Times reported on April, 29.

Right now in Costa Rica there are only 3 current craft breweries. Costa Rica Craft Brewing has been operating since 2012 out of Cartago. Restaurant-breweries Volcano Brewing (Arenal) and Bribri Springs (Caribbean) can only sell at their headquarters.

Treintaycinco, Calle Cimarrona, PerroVida, Pezuña negra y Perra Hermosa are on the verge of getting their paperwork pushed through to start business soon.

Treintaycinco (Escazu), which plans to start with 4000 litres per month and Calle Cimarron (The Yoses) plans to start production with 600-800 litres, it is reported.

Barley news Australia: NSW Farmers Association calling for inquiry into sale of GrainCorp to ADM
The NSW Farmers Association is calling for a federal inquiry into the sale of east coast grain handler GrainCorp to US giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), World-grain.com reported on April, 29.

GrainCorp handles over three-quarters of the grain grown in eastern Australia and directly sells half of the wheat exported from NSW.

GrainCorp directors have accepted a takeover bid from Archer Daniels Midland of A$3.4 billion dollars, after rejecting lesser offers from the American company.

ADM says if the offer proceeds the deal with help "connect Australia's growers with growing global demand for crops and food, particularly in Asia and the Middle East".

ADM has a Sydney office which services Australia, the Pacific and South East Asia.

They operate in 140 countries.

They produce a range of specialty food and feed ingredients made from corn, soy, wheat and cocoa.

They own a stake in Wilmar International Limited, a big Asian processing business and operates palm plantations, crushing facilities for various types of oilseeds, vegetable oil refineries and packaging facilities, plants that produce oleo chemicals, soy proteins and fertilisers, and multiple wheat and rice milling facilities.

The question for growers is will ownership by ADM benefit the Australian industry in any way?

Grains analyst Paul Jenz isn't worried. He thinks ...More info on site
