New insights into the delicacy of dry hop aroma
ABSTRACT
We know that a dry hop aroma is a very delicate quality that is easily lost. This presentation provided some answers to why this is happening. One known enemy is of course oxygen, so some flavour active compounds, e.g. monoterpenes, are easily lost due to oxidation. In this context antioxidants are crucial to support the delicate dry hop flavours. Also fruity aromas can be lost due to biotransformation by the yeast. Also if yeast is present, the flavour contribution of glycosides is not clear since both parts of it (sugar part and aglycones) can be metablised. In conclusion, a dry hop aroma derived from a yeast and oxygen free environment may have a greater chance to reach the consumers olfactory system…

USA, CO: American Homebrewers Association reports a 26 percent growth of homebrewers in 2012
|
The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) released the results of its fourth annual Homebrew Supply Shop Survey, detailing the current state of the home beer and wine supply retail industry. The results indicate that the community of homebrewing enthusiasts is growing, brewbound.com reported on June, 11.
Reviewing data from 275 shops spanning 47 states - a 32 percent increase in participants from last year’s survey - the survey found that on average, participants saw gross revenue increase by 26 percent in 2012. For shops that primarily sell homebrew supplies, gross revenue increased on average by 29 percent. This is 2 percent higher than last year’s results and 10 percent higher than results from the first AHA supply shop survey conducted in 2009.
“As home brewing continues to grow, retail shops are responding accordingly, satisfying the needs of their increasing customer base,” said Gary Glass, director of the American Homebrewers Association. “Homebrew supply shops serve as the heart of local home brewing communities. The success of a local shop will ensure a thriving community of home brewers.”

USA, WA: Ballast Point Brewing Company to distribute its beer in Seattle
|
Ballast Point Brewing Company of San Diego, California will soon start distributing beer in the Seattle area and Columbia Distributing Company will distribute the beer, seattlepi.com reported on June, 12.
The owners, Jack White and Yuseff Cherney, plan to bring Sculpin IPA into Seattle’s beer market.
Ballast Point Brewing products will be available on tap and in bottles.

USA, TX: 903 Brewers Company opened in Sherman, Texas
|
903 Brewers held its grand opening at a warehouse building off South Elm Street in Sherman, kten.com reported on June, 9.
Visitors paid to try out two different beers and look around the company's new home on Saturday, June, 8.
The new brewery is being started by a Pottsboro man and his wife. The next step is a plan to have their beer on tap at Cellerman's Pub in Sherman, starting later this month.

USA, IN: 18th Street Brewery to open this summer
|
18th Street Brewery, which has secured a location in the Miller Beach area, Gary, Northwest Indiana, is preparing to open, nwitimes.com reported on June, 8.
Founder and brewer Drew Fox said it is Gary’s first craft brewery.
“I’m doing something in my community,” said Fox, a Gary resident of five years. “This is an opportunity not just for Gary but for Northwest Indiana to really support something. I’m all in. I want to give something that’s positive to this community. When people ask me: 'Why Gary?' I ask: 'Why not?'”
The brewery already has established a following in the Chicago market, because Fox has been contract brewing his brand at Pipeworks Brewing.
“We want to promote people coming from Chicago on the train,” Drew Fox said. “We have one of the best locations for a tap room and brewery in Northwest Indiana.”
George Rogge, president of the Miller Business Association, said the brewery will become an important anchor on the street.
Fox has been so enamoured with Rogge’s support for his business that the brewery will produce a year-round IPA called Rogge Racer.

USA, NM: Santa Fe Brewing Co. to launch a limited edition of beers
|
The Santa Fe Brewing Co. is set to release a number of limited edition beers to celebrate its 25th anniversary, shankennesdaily.com reported on June, 11.
Santa Fe has unveiled a Saison, packaged in a commemorative limited edition can.
They will also introduce the “Los Innovadores Series” as part of their growing sour barrel-aged program that was started in 2011.
The series’ first release, Kriek, will be launched on June, 17 in 750-ml. bottles, followed by Single Barrel Sour in September.
Over the past two years, Santa Fe has increased its production to 25,000 barrels per year and added four new states to its distribution footprint.
The brewer’s line-up is available in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas and Missouri, as well as Nevada beginning with June, 17.

Frederick, Maryland - based Flying Dog Brewery will add two new beers to its Brewhouse Rarities series in the coming weeks, shankennewsdaily.com reported on June, 11.
Flying Dog Pineapple Saison will be released this month, followed by Belgian Devil Ale in July.
Pineapple Saison will be available on draft in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

USA, DE: Dogfish brewery to increase its beer production
|
Construction is progressing with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery’s $52 mln expansion, and the brewers hope production will start next month, delawareonline.com reported on June, 12.
Dogfish brewery is expecting to produce 200,000 barrels of beer this year, the equivalent of about 2.8 mln cases. The expansion will enable capacity of 500,000 barrels annually; a level co owner Nick Benz said should be reached in 2020.
The 28,000-square-foot addition will provide space for a 200-barrel brew house able to produce 10 batches of beer in 24 hours. It will complement the existing 100-barrel brew house that can make eight batches in a day.
Dogfish founder and President Sam Calagione said the brewery, which is in its 15th straight year of double-digit growth, needed to invest to expand capacity in meeting future demands.
“For the sake of the beer drinkers that love our beer, and equally for the sake of my co-workers who want opportunities to grow with the company ... we felt the need to keep investing and stay in front of our capacity constraints so we could offer more opportunity at the same time we’re offering more beer lovers more Dogfish Head beer,” he said.

USA, MN: Flat Earth Brewing Co. to move to a new location
|
The East Side brewery, which in the 1950s was home to the fifth-largest beer company in America, closed its doors in 1997. Now, Flat Earth Holdings, LLC, the company better known as the Flat Earth Brewing Co., has signed a licensing agreement with St. Paul to locate in a portion of the old brewery site, twincities.com reported on June, 11.
The company will move into buildings No. 7 and No. 8 in a long-vacant section of the Hamm's Brewery. Company president John Warner said he plans to occupy about 50,000 square feet.
"We're not doubling our space," said Warner, whose brewery now occupies a modest site by Pearson's Candy on West Seventh Street. "We're 14-timesing our space."
Flat Earth Brewing started in 2007 on Benson Avenue, south of Highland Park, and quickly became known for its hand-crafted assortment, including its Angry Planet Pale Ale and the popular Cygnus X-1 Porter, which is named after a black hole. Flat Earth's seasonal specials include a Black Helicopter Coffee Stout and the Mummy Train Pumpkin Ale.

USA, WI: Tenth and Blake Brewery expands by opening a location in Milwaukee
|
Tenth and Blake Beer Company, the craft and import division of Miller Coors, has purchased property behind its 10th Street brewery in Milwaukee, biztimes.com reported on June, 11.
"As demand for our craft and specialty beers continues to increase, this additional space gives us the ability to expand our overall brewing and packaging capacity," said Tom Cardella, Tenth and Blake president and chief executive officer.
Tenth and Blake will refurbish the two-story building, which was built in 1924, over the next several months, and expects it to be ready in early 2014.
Tenth and Blake Beer Company is the craft and import division of Miller Coors.
The Tenth and Blake family of breweries includes Blue Moon Brewing Co. at the Sandlot in Denver, Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. in Chippewa Falls, Wis., 10th Street Brewery in Milwaukee, AC Golden in Golden, Colorado, Birra Peroni in Rome and Plzeňský Prazdroj (Pilsner Urquell) in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Canada, ON: Highlander Brew Co. to release Highlander Lion Grass
|
Highlander Brew Co. has revealed details about a new beer they have prepared to debut at the Session Toronto beer festival, canadianbeernews.com reported on June, 12.
Highlander Lion Grass was created in collaboration with Kerri King, the Tourism Manager for Durham Tourism.
Highlander Lion Grass will be available in the Collaboration Nation area of Session Toronto, which will feature beers created by 20 different Ontario breweries together with artists and personalities from across Ontario. The Session festival will take place on June 22nd at Wychwood Barns in Toronto at the close of Ontario Craft Beer Week.
Following its debut at Session, Lion Grass will be available in kegs and 650 ml bottles at the Highlander brewery.

Canada, SK: Regina brewery to release its first beer this summer
|
Byron Wiebe and Jay Cooke, founders of Regina brewery, moved to Saskatchewan two years ago and now they’re nearly ready to open Regina’s only microbrewery, cjme.com reported on June, 12.
“It was kind of a match made in heaven, I guess you could say,” Wiebe said.
But starting a brewery has its own challenges. After investing over C$1 mln to purchase equipment and have it shipped from the East Coast, the pair (along with three other partners) began retrofitting a 12,000 square-foot building in Regina’s Warehouse District to house it.
“It was kind of a miscommunication between us and the municipal government,” said Wiebe. ““We started working on the building doing stuff that we thought wouldn’t normally require a building permit… And they sort of said, ‘Whoa, slow down. We need to go through the proper way of doing this.’”
On Friday, June, 7, the pair got back to work in the building and are now hoping to be brewing beers in a “few short weeks.” Wiebe said they’ve already got their first brand prepared for production, with a fancy green bottle, sharp blue labels and a memorable name: Müs Knuckle.

Canada, NB: Picaroons Traditional Ales Brewery collaborates with Fredericton Region Museum in order to release Regiment Ale
|
Picaroons Traditional Ales and the Fredericton Region Museum have announced a new partnership based around an important event in New Brunswick’s history, canadianbeernews.com reported on June, 12.
As noted back when it was first available in February, Picaroons’ 104th Regiment Ale commemorates the 200th anniversary of the 104th Regiment of Foot leaving Fredericton for an 1100 kilometre march to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce the British garrison during the War of 1812.
The beer has now been re-released in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings depicting the march by members of La Société culturelle Saint-Basile.
An opening reception took place at the Museum on Wednesday June, 12th, with Picaroons on hand to serve samples of 104th Regiment Ale. In addition, 25 cents from every bottle of the beer sold at ANBL locations will be donated to the Museum.
104th Regiment Ale is the first in a planned series of beers from Piacroons that will commemorate historic New Brunswick events and institutions.

Australia: The Grain Trade Australia refuses to ban on-farm drying of malt barley
|
The Grain Trade Australia (GTA) Standards Committee has removed a proposal to ban on-farm drying of malt barley, Merredin - Wheatbelt Mercury reported on June, 11.
A storage operator put forward the proposal in the initial round of submissions on the committee's annual review of grain standards, citing deliveries of malt barley that had poor germination results attributable to incorrect on-farm drying.
The proposal was included as part of the draft standards released by the committee earlier this year for industry consideration.
Sound and reasoned submissions were received from WA, arguing the use of on-farm grain dryers for malt barley was accepted practice and critical to growing malt barley in many regions.
GTA chief executive Geoff Honey said the result was a clear indication of the effectiveness of the process.
"Every year we accept submissions to the review of grain standards and then circulate a draft for further input from all sectors of the industry," Mr Honey said.

Japan: Weaker yen boosts craft beer market
|
The government will continue to strive for a weaker yen to help boost Japanese exports. The flipside of that, however, is that a weaker yen will drive up the consumer prices of imported products, including imported beer, Japan Daily Press reported on June, 11.
Japan is generally a beer-drinking culture, and imported beers are heavily consumed. But small local breweries – makers of locally made craft beers – are hoping that the economic situation will drive more people to opt for locally brewed ale.
Naoyuki Ide, president of Yo-Ho Brewing Co., is boosting production output and capacity at his microbrewery in Nagano by 50 percent this year. He is betting and anticipating the currency’s decline that will eventually force importers to raise prices for foreign brands, giving local craft brewers a competitive edge. “If the yen weakens more, they’ll have to increase import beer prices in the near future,” said Ide. “Import beers cater to people’s growing taste for beer with character, but if customers are looking for something distinct, they may choose our beer instead, because it’ll be cheaper,” he added hopefully.

Italy: Craft brewers grow and add variety to the beer market
|
Italy was not a country one visited for its beer 20 years ago. Today the situation has changed and the craft beer movement is flourishing, Brewers’ Guardian reported on June, 11.
With openings almost weekly, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact number of breweries in the country, but consumer website microbirrifici.org currently lists 551 – and this is from a standing start in the mid-1990s.
In the early 1990 beer in Italy was largely a two-tiered affair. Bars mostly sold pilsners designed to quench thirsts. Supermarkets sold much the same products but were also lined with strong, syrupy beers, often imported.
Today there’s much greater variety. A scan of the 24 categories judged at this year's Birra dell'Anno (Beer of the Year) contest reveals Kolsch-style beers, IPAs, weizens and Abbey ales.
As such, Italian craft products are able to command a premium. Drinkers pay around €5 for a glass (40 cl) of 'artisan' beer in a pub or bar. A 750 ml bottle in a shop or restaurant runs to €11 or more.

Australia: Consumption of craft beers continues to grow

The brewing industries in many countries are undergoing dramatic changes, with increasing numbers of craft breweries challenging the traditional volume-based business model of major corporations, Marketing Magazine reported on June, 11.
In the US for example, more than 400 breweries opened in 2012, an increase of 17% from the year before. Craft beer continues to grow even when beer consumption overall is declining in many markets around the world. This certainly seems to be the trend in countries like the US, Canada, New Zealand and indeed Australia.
In 1990, the centralisation of the Australian beer industry seemed complete; three companies controlled the market and the whole country had just 11 breweries. Yet this seems to have been the turning point rather than the end state: 20 years later the craft beer sector had well and truly made its entrance so that by 2013, Australia’s beer industry consists of over 130 breweries.
The trend suggests craft breweries have found a niche market where the large breweries find it hard to compete.
