Zunkel catalogued all this components according to their origin, flavour thresholds, flavour
description, molecular structure and references. The outcome is an impressive excel list that could be called the hop flavour bible. An excerpt of the database was presented as a poster at the ASBC annual meeting and the entire database will soon be available through the ASBC.

Belgium: Trappist brewery production under threat from expansion of a limestone quarry

Since 1595 the Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy-Rochefort abbey in southern Belgium has been plundered, invaded and ravaged by fire, but still today the monks rise each morning to brew a potent dark ale prized the world over for its depth and flavour, The Independent communicated on June, 20.
Now production at one of the world's eight remaining Trappist breweries is again under threat, this time from the expansion of a limestone quarry which will cut off their water supply.
The Belgian monks who brew Rochefort say the water from a nearby well is crucial to taste of their sought-after ale, which frequently appears in lists of the best beers in the world.
But plans by a limestone mining company to deepen a quarry in the vicinity of the Abbey threaten to plug the water source that the monks have relied upon for centuries. The Flanders News website reported that the mining firm, Lhoist, had offered to dig more wells to supply the monastery, but the monks are wary that the flavour will simply not be the same.

China: Beijing enjoying microbrewery boom
|
China consumed 59.3 billion litres of alcohol in 2012 - nearly double the amount drunk in the U.S. Beer accounted for 84% of that figure, according to market research firm Euromonitor. Yet per capita, Chinese consumption was only about 35 litres annually - less than half of the United States, according to Bloomberg - and still has enormous room to grow, CNN reported on June, 20.
That has led to a microbrewery boom in Beijing. "There's a whole slew of places that are about to emerge," said Ryan O'Neal Johnston, owner of Beijing's The Drive-Thru Bar. "For anyone interested in anything besides lagers and Tsingtao, it's on."
Carl Setzer is a 31-year old native of Cleveland, Ohio, who had barely touched alcohol until he was 25. After college, he landed in Shiyan, Hubei Province where an agency found him work at Dongfeng Motors. Setzer, an IT specialist, walked away from his lucrative career and jumped into the microbrewery business because he saw a niche. "Never let a market that has a requirement go unsupplied," said Setzer, who opened Great Leap Brewing in October 2010.

Sri Lanka: Sri Lankans shifting towards drinking beer packed in aluminum cans

A shift in the consumption pattern of Sri Lankans towards strong beers packed in aluminum cans has been registered according to Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC’s reports of June 20th.
Chairman of the company, Vijay Shah in his review made to the firm’s latest annual report says, this factor along with several others impacted its domestic sales volumes.
According to him, the major decline has been in the Liquor segment which plays a vital part in the Piramal’s local sales.
“Part of our low end liquor market was lost to the cheap second-hand low quality liquor bottles which were imported into the Country”, Vijay revealed.
However, despite the drop experienced in the domestic market, the firm’s profit after tax during the financial year 2012 /13 has seen a year-on-year growth of 6-pct to stand at Rs. 725 million.
The company has earned Rs. 1.37 billion as export income during the reference year, an increase of 12-pct.
Vijay believes diversification of the firm’s export mix has helped the growth and also has reduced its dependence on the fiercely competitive Indian market.

UK: SY Venture – now the highest-yielding winter malting barley for brewing on the HGCA Recommended List
|
A new, high-yielding winter malting barley variety, only launched last summer, has received industry recognition for its malting quality – by being awarded Full Approval for brewing use by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, Western Morning News reported on June 19th.
SY Venture, from Syngenta, is now the highest-yielding winter malting barley which has Full IBD approval for brewing on the 2013/2014 HGCA Recommended List, said Syngenta cereal campaign manager Mark Britton.
With its UK treated yield of 101% of controls, he said it also showed a 5% yield increase over a number of established winter malting barley varieties on the list. And now, this latest promotion by the IBD also demonstrated that Venture had met the quality standards for malting required by end users, he added.
"With growers currently considering which varieties to grow for next season, the promotion of Venture to Full Approval has come at an ideal time," said Mr Britton. "It will give farmers even greater confidence to plant it this autumn. This is especially so since Venture is also a practical variety to grow.
