2. Industry news
EU malt export licence bookings for the period of July 1, 2002, until January 28, 2003, are 1,316,111 tons versus 1,395,443 tons during the same period of last year. At the same pace of licence fixations until the end of the crop year on June 30, bookings would reach a figure of 2.25 Mill. tons. The export surplus of the EU is approximately 2.4 Mill. tons. Shares in Scottish & Newcastle Plc gained over three percent on Monday as investors saw value following a recent 24% slide and were cheered by takeover talk surrounding brewers in Italy and Austria, according to Reuters.
Scottish & Newcastle was at 364 pence by 1345 GMT, turning up after near-continuous losses since early January, after speculation it could be among a pack of firms interested in a stake in Italian beer brewer Peroni.
The rebound in S&N shares came after Britain's biggest brewer last Monday put a question mark over its dividend policy and expansion plans after fresh problems at its UK beer unit Scottish Courage.

North America: The barley provinces and states of Canada and the U.S. have experienced unusual weather conditions so far this winter. It has been much too warm until mid January, when the weather changed to strong frost. There is almost no snow on the ground. Especially the Great Plains from the Rockies to Kansas depend very much on winter precipitation, as spring and summer rainfall is rare. Mississippi navigation is impaired, water level at St. Louis is 3 meters below normal. These extreme conditions are attributed to the El Nino weather pattern, and experts cannot agree, when the negative effects of the present El Nino will weaken or disappear. U.S. barley acreage is forecast to increase substantially, as prices are high and U.S. maltsters and brewers have concluded large contracts with growers following the crop disaster of 2002. Acreage in Canada is expected to be unchanged or lower, there is a lack of quality seed and a preference of farmers for other grains and colza.
Australia: Heat and drought have lasted nine months by now. Temperatures soared above 40 degrees (104 Fahrenheit), there were forest fires all over the country, and livestock numbers have declined sharply because of the lack of feed and water. There is 4-5 months time until winter planting of grains, but very substantial rainfalls will be needed to replenish soil moisture to a level, which make regular crops possible.
Foster’s Group Limited announced on February 11 strong performances for the half-year ended 31 December 2002: net profit after tax of $335.3 million was 4.1% higher than the previous corresponding period. On a normalised basis, adjusting for SGARA1, significant items and amortisation, net profit after tax was $355.6 million, 9.4% higher than the previous comparative period. Margins improved in the Australian beer business and were maintained in the global wine trade division. Operating revenue increased 6.4% to $2.7 billion. Net sales revenue increased 6.1% to $2.5 billion. Operating cashflow (after interest and tax) of $225.7 million was significantly higher than the prior year amount of $58.4 million. Amstel Beer is set to remain a sponsor of the UEFA Champions League in the coming years, the Dutch brewer Heneken reported on February 6. Today Amstel and UEFA announced that Amstel, Europe's second largest beer brand, has committed to a new three-year contract (2003-2006) as one of the main sponsors of the UEFA Champions League. The relationship between Amstel and UEFA is one of the longest lasting in UEFA Champions League history. In 2004 the relationship between Amstel and UEFA will exist for ten years.
