Brewery News
Russia: No. 2 brewer Sun Interbrew has launched local production of its main brand, Stella Artois, in Russia, the company announced on April 12. The beer will be bottled at the company's Novocheboksar plant in Chuvashia to reduce transport costs. Sales of the premium label were up 114 % last year, the company said. Previously Stella Artois was imported to Russia from Ukraine. Ukrainian Stella Artois is brewed at Desna Brewery, Chernigov owned by Sun Interbrew Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Sun Interbrew announced that all of its Russian production and distribution companies, with the exception of its Bavaria Brewery, have been merged into OAO SUN Interbrew.
Beer sales in Russia increased 17.6% in January-February this year up to 10.17 million hl versus the same period last year, according to Interfax.
Australian beer and wine company Foster's Group Ltd. said on April 13 that John Murphy was appointed managing director of its Carlton & United Beverages beer division, according to Dow Jones. Murphy has most recently been vice president of marketing and sales at CUB, and over 24 years has held a variety of roles across finance, administration, operations and procurement, the company said.
Last month, Foster's promoted the head of CUB, Trevor O'Hoy, to chief executive of the entire company. O'Hoy said Murphy's appointment reflects a strategy of strong focus on margins; core brands, particularly in the premium segment; maximization of operational efficiencies; and returns from existing operations.
Japan: A special blend of Yebisu, arguably Japan's premium mass-produced beer, will go on sale by reservation from April 16, according to Sapporo Breweries Ltd. The special blend will be a beer allowed to brew for twice as long as normal, giving the beverage a deeper color and richer flavor, Mainichi Shimbun posted on April 10.
The prolonged brew Yebisu will sell in six packs costing 2,100 yen apiece, with each of the 330 milliliter bottles having an alcohol content of 6.1 percent. Production will be limited to 10,000 six packs. Shipping anywhere in Japan will incur an additional charge of 525 yen, with deliveries to be made during May and June.
Canadian Molson is going for Olympic gold, according to Datamonitor’s report from April 13. The 2004 Summer Olympic Games are just around the corner and CPG companies are hustling hard for the spotlight. Molson's sustained guerilla marketing has now significantly impacted Labatt's longstanding relationship with the Olympics, highlighting the difficulties of exclusivity deals with the enormous and unpredictable event.
Canadian brewer Molson has unveiled a joint initiative with La Cage aux Sports restaurants, enabling top amateur athletes to receive thousands of dollars through the 'See You In Athens' fund, a not-for-profit organisation established to directly support the development of
top-level amateur athletes seeking to train and prepare for international competitions. The two companies will donate C$1 for each Molson product purchased at one of the 42 Cage aux Sports establishments across Quebec, during the first two Montreal Canadien's play-off games at the Bell Centre on 11 and 13 April 2004... more info
USA: The Coors Brewing Co. is pulling ads featuring company chairman Peter Coors from the Colorado airwaves because of his rumored run for the U.S. Senate, according to United Press International report from April 12. The Denver Post reported on April 12 the ads will be taken off television stations in Colorado so the company, the nation's third-largest brewer, can remain in compliance with federal campaign and election laws.
The Federal Elections Commission, which is responsible for the oversight of U.S. federal campaigns, has tentatively determined that such commercial advertisements cannot air 30 days before a primary or 60 days before a general election.
The FEC's ruling arises out of a section of the new McCain-Feingold campaign finance law that deals specifically with the issue of candidates for federal office appearing in commercial advertisements airing in the state or district where they are running.
Coors is expected to announce his candidacy on April 13 at the state capitol building in Denver.
Malt News
EU malt export licence bookings for the first nine months of the crop year were
1.858 million tonnes. The total for the year will easily top the total of 2.038
million tonnes of last year. It signals two things: Last year’s figure was artificially low because of delayed shipments instead of smaller sales. And the exports of 2003/04 remain at a good level of
2.2-2.3 million tonnes in spite of the often reported lesser demand of some key malt importers.

Barley News
France: Fairly mild winter weather enabled French farmers to plant their spring barley between mid February and the first decade of March. That is a good start into the growing season, analysts said in a statement. Most estimates of the spring barley acreage are between 490 and 525,000 ha. Split up of varieties: 200,000 ha Scarlett, 150,000 ha Prestige, 70,000 ha Cellar, a newcomer with good success, others like Cork, Pasadena, Barke share the balance of 60 - 80,000 ha. Winter barley looks good after the harmless winter weather. Esterel is grown on 380 – 400,000 ha, the two-row winter barley Vanessa on 80,000 ha. So far the crop condition looks good, however, this weeks forecast rain is needed, subsoil moisture is low.
Denmark: Scattered rains this last weekend of March, but spring time has finally started. Sowing has started last week and if the weather permits, be finished by Easter or shortly after. Denmark intends to sow about 560,000 ha to spring barley. The main varieties are 1. Prestige, 2. Barke; 3. Alliott (less than past years), 4. Sebastian (new) and then Scarlett and Landora – of which the latter has lost a lot of ground. Denmark is coming up with several new varieties (Sebastian, Class, Brazil) which all have high yields (index 105 tonnes versus 95 for Barke), and if these varieties proof good for the malting industry, farmers and grain traders hope for good premiums for these varieties.
