According to the coordinator of Bughendera Credit and Savings Cooperative Society, Mr Nelson Bikalwamuhi, "The farmers are happy because their barley project is doing very well."
He was briefing journalists on May 9 in Bundibugyo town about the success of the project which was first piloted in the sub-counties of Harugale and Ndugutu in the new county of Bughendera. The crop seeds were distributed to the farmers at the beginning of this year by the area MP Joseph Kiregheya.
He bought them from Kapchorwa district. The Bughendera Credit and Savings Cooperative Society manager, Ms Raham Ratya disclosed that about 16 tonnes of barley seeds were distributed to farmers in the county.
She assured the farmers that the society would buy the harvested barley from them at Shs400 per kg. The farmers have started harvesting the crop which will be sold to Uganda Breweries, the makers of Senator beer.
