Beer sales in Norway fell 7.2 % during the first half of this year, continuing a trend that began a few years ago. It may lead to more brewery closures, claims an industry trade association. Alcohol consumption in general is rising, but beer is becoming less popular. Grocery store sales fell 7.7 %, while bars and restaurants reported a decline in beer sales of just under 5 %. Beer sales have been hit hard by the so-called rusbrus, or soft drinks with alcoholic content, now available in stores. Wine also has become an ever-more popular alternative to beer.

Among companies most vulnerable to declining beer sales is industrial concern Orkla, which has a major stake in Carlsberg breweries and, through it, controls Ringnes breweries and bottling plants in Norway. Ringnes met loud public protests earlier this year when it decided to close its Tou brewery in Stavanger.
