United States: A new malting barley variety to be released in Minnesota
Rasmusson, a new malting barley variety, is being released by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, Agri News posted on October, 28.
As it was reported, the new variety has slightly higher malt extract, which is important in the malting and brewing industries and high yield.
New barley varieties have to pass a four-year, two-step quality evaluation by the malting and brewing members of the American Malting Barley Association.
After two years of pilot-scale malting tests, Rassmusson was rated satisfactory and advanced to the two-year plant scale brewing trials. The variety originated from a cross between the variety Lacey and a high-yielding breeding line called M95.
