Ukrainian brewing industry needs about 400 thousand tonnes of malting barley per year. Farmers harvested about 6.8 million tonnes of barley in 2003, that is 34.6% or with 3.588 million tonnes less than in 2002. 2 million tonnes out of 7 million tonnes of barley is malting barley. Moreover, according to analysts, around 70% of malting barley harvested in Ukraine is of low quality.
