Australia: ABB Grain receives first delivery of this year’s barley crop
The first loads of barley for the 2009 South Australian grain harvest have been delivered to ABB Grain’s Port Pirie silos, signalling that the start of harvest proper is not far away, ABB Grain posted on its website on October, 13.
The honour of delivering the first load this season went to D.L. Lane Pty Ltd when 20.1 tonnes of Keel variety barley was delivered into the silos late on October, 9 afternoon.
Traditionally the first grain deliveries in South Australia usually do not occur until mid to late October, however in 2007 ABB received its first grower delivery on October 4.
With Sunday’s warm and windy conditions in South Australia, further deliveries of grain are expected this week from early maturing areas. However, it is expected it will be a few weeks before the grain harvest starts in earnest.
