Mozambique: New brewery to use locally grown hops
Brewery news

The Nampula beer factory, Fábrica de Cervejas de Nampula, in Mozambique, which is due to start operating this year, will use hops produced in Mozambique, José Moreira, director of Cervejas de Moçambique (CdM), was quoted as saying by Macauhub on October, 28.

According to Moreira, the decision is aimed to reduce the cost of importing the raw materials used in beer making: hops and barley.

Moreira said that hops production had begun in the 2008/2009 season in Manica, as local conditions were favourable for growing the crop, but did not say how much hops was expected to be harvested at the end of the season.

The Nampula beer factory, according to the available figures, will have capacity to produce 480,000 hectolitres of beer per year, of CdM's traditional brands, namely Manica, 2M, Laurentina, normal and Premier.

Construction of the factory, which is expected to start operating before the end of the year, represents an investment of US$55 million.
