USA, VI: New law allows craft breweries to sell their beer on location
Brewery news

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell signed legislation allowing craft breweries to sell their beer for consumption on site, Virginia Business reported on May, 15.

Previously, breweries could not sell beer without having a full-service restaurant on site. Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Jeffrey McWaters allows Virginia’s craft brewers to sell beer at their locations, closed containers for off-site consumption and offer samples.

“SB 604 will, without question, create a substantial number of hospitality and manufacturing jobs, generate significantly greater sales tax revenues, increase tourism, attract new and expanding craft breweries to Virginia, support local agriculture, and enhance Virginia’s food and beverage culture,” said Eric Mackay, co-founder of Hardywood Park Brewery in Richmond.

Another bill signed by McDonnell, which was sponsored by Del. Jennifer McClellan, allows current manufacturers to lease space in their brewhouses to small or smaller-scale breweries.

Virginia currently has 44 licensed breweries.
