Canada, NL: Baccalieu Trail Brewing Company proposing to set up brewery in Bay Roberts
Newfoundland and Labrador's craft beer explosion may soon have a foothold in Conception Bay North, The Compass reported on September 25.
Baccalieu Trail Brewing Company, owned by Mark Burry and Julian Kean, is proposing to set up a brewery with five-barrel capacity in Bay Roberts. The town council gave its approval in principle earlier this month, and now the provincial environment department is assessing the proposal.
If the application before government is approved, the brewery would take ownership of 1 Conception Bay Highway in Bay Roberts, a commercial property located near the Shearstown Estuary previously used as a hair salon and tanning studio. The building would be redeveloped to include a taproom for patrons to taste and purchase beer brewed and bottled on site.
While brewing would be a year-round venture, the taproom would only open seasonally from May to October. The site would produce 1,300 barrels per year, equivalent to approximately 152,500 litres.
The project was registered with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment Sept. 12. The deadline for public comments on the proposal is Oct. 24, and a decision from the minister is due Oct. 27.
