Ukraine: January barley exports almost twice as high as in December 2017
Ukraine exported 140.8 thousand tonnes of barley in January 2018, i.e. almost twice as much as it shipped abroad in December 2017 (72.1 thousand tonnes), but 13% less than in the same month a year ago (161.7 thousand tonnes was exported in January 2017), UkrAgroConsult reported on March 1.
Ukrainian exporters supplied 3.95 mln tonnes of barley to foreign markets in the first seven months of the current season, which is is down 12% year-on-year (4.47 mln tonnes was exported in July-January 2016/17).
In January, the bulk of Ukrainian barley was shipped to Saudi Arabia, the European Union and Libya. The share of Turkey continues expanding. Ukraine supplied some 148 thousand tonnes of barley to this market at the time, i.e. 11% more than for the entire last season.
A substantial surge in Ukrainian barley shipments to China (790 thousand tonnes, or up 263% from MY 2016/17) has entailed a drop in supplies to end markets such as Libya, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia and others.
