Canada, BC: Land & Sea Brewing Company opens its doors in Comox Valley
Comox residents finally have a brewery of their own.
Land & Sea Brewing Company has opened its doors as the newest addition to the Comox Valley’s growing craft beer scene, the Comox Valley Record reported on December 16.
Jason Walker, Land & Sea’s founder and managing director, noticed a need for more casual dining spots in Comox and decided to do something about it. He brought his love of craft beer together with his background in market research and customer experience to create the Town’s newest hang out spot.
“We hope to bring a casual place for our local community to come in and have some delicious craft beer, some great food and a good time,” he said. “Share beers, share laughs and just a place for the community to gather and celebrate where we live.”
To begin with, the brewery will offer five different styles of beer courtesy of head brewer, Tessa Gabiniewicz. While some of the styles of beer can be found at other local breweries, some are unique to Land & Sea. So what beers do they have on tap? Well, you’ll just have to come in and find out, says Walker.
As for the name, Walker says he and his team drew inspiration from the Comox Valley itself and its connection to the ocean and rich agriculture. This is demonstrated in the menu, which Walker says includes small shared plates and snacks inspired by both the land and the sea.
Walker has been working to open the brewery for over a year and says he could not have done it without his team.
“I’m not pretending to be an expert in any of this, but I’m taking the approach of surrounding myself with good people that know what it takes to be successful,” he said.
Walker enlisted the help of Cumberland Brewing Co. manager Darren Adam and brewer Mike Tymchuk as consultants and says the craft beer community in the Valley is very supportive.
“They’re very very collaborative… the brewers are always talking to each other and sharing ideas, sharing material if need be,” he said. “It’s a very strong community and I think we’re going to be a very nice complement to what currently exists in the Valley.”
Land & Sea will offer the largest indoor seating area out of the existing breweries with a capacity of 72 people.
Located at 2040 Guthrie Road, it is not the first brewery in Comox, as a building across the street housed the former Surgenor Brewing Company which closed in 2010.
And Land & Sea will not be the only brewery open for long. New Tradition Brewing Company is expected to open their doors in mid-2019 in the Comox Centre Mall.
