USA, VA: Decipher Brewing to become Charlottesville’s newest craft brewery
Brewery news

A group of three Navy veterans and one active Air Force service member are set to open Charlottesville's newest craft brewery in the month of June, CBS19 NEWS reported on June 4.

Decipher Brewing, soon to open in Belmont, was an idea first created roughly ten years ago in Colorado.

Brothers, Scott and Brad Bulton, both veterans of the Navy bought a home brew kit and quickly fell in with the process of making beer.

They say they've been able to take some of the skills learned from nearly a decade in the Navy and translate a hobby into a business.

"When I was in the navy we were stuck on a boat for months at a time," says Brad Burton, head brewer.

"You get used to the structure and you get on a routine. I think you need a bit of a routine in a brewery because of the steps that need to happen when you're brewing a beer."

It's more than just a job to Scott Burton, brewer and general manager.

He has found similarities between the beer industry and his time serving eight years in the Navy.

"I think that the beer community and breweries kind of provide that camaraderie that you get in the military," he says.

It will be very important to Decipher to be known as a veteran owned business that makes world class beer.

They do plan on offering special deals to past and current service members.

However, there's a lot more to Decipher Brewing than just being veteran owned.

The goal is for the taproom experience to be unlike anything you've ever experienced.

"When people come and see us when we open, they'll see a lot of stuff that's hanging on our walls that may not make sense," says Colin Bridge, another Navy veteran, co-owner and creative director for Decipher.

"So they're going to have to ask the questions or figure it out themselves."

He's talking about codes and puzzles that will be laid out throughout the entire brewery.

"If someone solves a message, finds a code, solves it, there will be some type of prize for them at the end," says Brad Burton.

The plan is for Decipher's taproom to be available to the public starting Saturday June 15th.

After opening, the taproom will be open Tuesdays through Sundays.

There is no restaurant at the brewery, but ownership says they plan on having food trucks.
